Art imitates life.
In the life of the great Francisco Goya, there was a period when he became a recluse. The bright master of the Romantic era fenced off the world and created his “Black Paintings”, fourteen frescoes that Goya painted on the walls of his own house. He depicted “Saturn Devouring His Son” in his dining room. […]

"But what is it then that sits in my heart, that breathes so quietly, and without lungs-- that is here, here in this world, and yet not here?" --Mary Oliver, "The Leaf and the Cloud" (excerpt)
I’ve always loved seeing period depictions of woodworkers at work. To see the way their tools are stored, their posture while working, and even shop conditions brings these makers to life for me. I have for years been downloading images I found online when they were particularly interesting. It’s been helpful but I often lost track of where I got them. When I recently did a Google image search for an old painting, I realized upon clicking on it that it was hosted on Pinterest. I had never signed up for Pinterest because it seemed like there wasn’t much of interest to me. Lots of knitting and home décor stuff. But this time when I clicked to the “board” that this particular image was on (“pinned to”), I saw tons more paintings, drawings, and photographs of woodworkers that I hadn’t seen before. For those of you that don’t know, Pinterest is a website on which you can organize your favorite images you find online. After you sign up for a free account, you can view the collections of images from people with the same interest as you. For me, I’ve found a pile of pre-industrial woodworkers. I “pinned” them all on one board so that you can see them together. So, if you’d like to see this gallery of images, check out it out here. I don’t know much about Pinterest but I expect one of these days I’ll make a board of furniture images that I like. For now, check out these woodworkers.

When it comes to horror, we often refer to a genre of literature or film, but not so often to paintings. However, a big part of art history is actually built on morbid art and rather disturbing and scary paintings, many of which belong to the period of 'rebirth.' The Renaissance saw not only the making of some of the most famous paintings in art history but also numerous creepy paintings depicting the inherent darkness of the human condition.

He had his first professional art instruction at the age of fifteen, and at twenty-two he left for Madrid for further study. Not long after, he won the patronage of the Duque del Infantado, and was able to travel and continue his studies. He would go on to win prestigious awards, such as the second prize in the National Exhibition of 1924, and the first in the International Exhibition of Barcelona in 1929. That same year he married and he and his wife would have two children; his daughter would also become an artist. He began to show internationally, but the Spanish Civil War intervened; his home in Madrid was destroyed in the bombing, and his family moved to Valencia for the duration. After the war, in 1939, they moved to his hometown of Granada where they spent the next eight years. He continued to show widely, but mostly in Spain. In 1947, he became professor of color theory at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. a position he would hold until two months before his death. Much of his work was devoted to the representation of Andalusian, Castilian, and Moroccan character types. And in almost all of his paintings, he employed dramatic lighting effects alongside a lavish display of chromatic richness. Bodegón, 1943. Whether it’s famous subjects or the vague everyman or everywoman, the artist packs both meticulous, odd flair and personality into each of the paintings. Let us invite you to a world where centuries collide, and classical masterpieces get a modern makeover with a dash of humor.
How do you feel about classical art? Whether you take an annual trip to the Louvre or your idea of classical art is the paintings on the walls at your grandmother’s house, there’s no question that artists from hundreds of years ago were impressive. It is amazing how so many of their pieces stand the test of time and are still admired in museums around the globe by millions of visitors per year. But if you’re not a classical art fanatic, you might be wondering how any of these dusty, old paintings relate to you.
There's something about classical art that just turns me off. Endless portraits of pale and plump aristocrats looking all fancy in the classical paintings, bucolic rural scenes, religious iconography... I can certainly appreciate the skill and relevance back in the pre-photography age, but these days we need a message!
