As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, now is the perfect time to start thinking about how to relax and be cozy at home. You may have heard of the Danish idea of hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) that embodies a feeling of contentment, coziness, enjoying the little things in life, and viewing those little things as special. Source So autumn and winter are the perfect time to shed the stress and busyness of the season in favor of practicing self-care that will help you enjoy all the little things that happen every day. You might be thinking, "Why now? My calendar is filling up quickly (or is already full) with holiday commitments! Now is not the time to try to fit these things in too!" But NOW is the perfect time! First off, take a look at your calendar. Do you really NEED to do everything you've scheduled? Do you have anything that is penciled in as just a "want to do" but not a "need to do"? Maybe that might be something you'd be willing to forgo in favor of a day of relaxing. If not, don't worry about trying to accomplish all of the things on this list. These are just a few ideas to get you started. Some don't take a lot of time to do, but the ones that take more time are certainly not intended to cause more stress. This post probably contains affiliate links. You can read our full disclosure policy here. It’s that time of the year again. The time for making wishes, believing in miracles, being good, celebrating life and cozying up with a cup of hot cocoa by the fire while watching the snow fall down. Ahhhh….In other words, it’s the most hyggeligt time of the year. Huh? What’s that word again? What’s hygge? Well, if you’ve stumbled upon this post you probably already have an idea of what hygge is. But in case you’ve been living in a strange part of the internet and this is the first time you come across this word, let me share some light on this awesome concept. Hygge (pronounced hue-ga) is the Danish concept of happy living, that took the world by storm several years ago. It is roughly translated as coziness in English but it is so much more than just that. Although it is a huge trend in everything from home décor, to fashion and lifestyle in general, hygge is a feeling above all else – on my opinion, the most wonderful feeling there is. When you come home and leave all the hustle outside – that’s hygge; when you’re surrounded by your friends and you’re laughing, drinking and talking about anything and everything – that’s hygge; when you’re curled up on the couch under a soft blanket and you’re submerged entirely in a good book – that’s hygge; when you taste that first sip of coffee in the morning and you feel the world awakening in you and all the colors coming to life – that’s hygge. Hygge is the feeling of coziness, comfort, togetherness, peace of mind…quiet and warm happiness. This sounds pretty universal, right, so why is it that the Danes have taken ownership of the idea? Because they found the secret ingredient that has turned them in, objectively, the happiest nation on Earth. They do hygge intentionally, on purpose, wholly aware of it and entirely present in those hygge moments. Neat, huh? So why not learn from them and create some hygge moments for us and the people we love this season? You can feel hygge all year round, but there’s no doubt about it that winter and especially Christmas time is the most hyggelig time. There’s just something about the season (hmm….probably the freezing temperatures) that makes you constantly think of cozying up inside with good friends, good book or good wine (or all of the above). Hygge is all about appreciating the little things in life so stuffing the Christmas stockings with some hygge makes perfect sense, right? Right?!
