Oneiric and poetic Alexandra Levasseur’s work puts into scene tormented feminine figures in dream-like landscapes. As she tells us, she believes that women still remain the symbol for the expression of universal emotions such as love, fear, anguish and unrequited desire which are the central themes for her art. Alexandra Levasseur explores both, the loneliness […]

English artist Ed Fairburn (previously) uses vintage road maps and star charts as canvases for drawn portraits. Cross-hatched patterns and shaded regions inside roads, borders, and rivers assimilate into the contours of faces as if the images had always been secretly hidden in the map’s topography. “In his hands, both built infrastructure and natural phenomena echo the organic human form,” shares Mike Wright Gallery. “National highway systems become capillaries, and the tangle of Paris’ alleyways become the wrinkles that give the face history and individuality.” Fairburn opens a new show of work alongside artist John Wentz today at Mike Wright in Denver. Disfrutadlas. Since graduating in 2006 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Auckland University of Technology, Henrietta has steadily built up a name for herself as a solid New Zealand illustrator. She has skilfully hand-drawn hands, faces, brains, glaciers and at least seven other Categories of Things, many of which have appeared on canvases in shows all over New Zealand, Australia, London and New York; some of which have appeared on her own successful line of hand-printed t-shirts; some of which have appeared on t-shirts made by other hands (namely those of Parinto and Barker’s Men’s Clothing); and some more of which emerge from the pages of fine print publications such as BITE, Metro and Sunday Magazines. She has a varied list of clients, including Flying Nun Records, Amnesty International, Four Paws Media and Vice Magazine. Henrietta has developed the timeless style that can only be achieved by having occasionally dipped one’s paintbrush accidentally in one’s coffee, but also combines tradition with less hazardous digital methods, all of which has resulted in an extensive, mutable, and memorable body of work.
