The colorful cover of this vintage wine list was created for Lucca, a restaurant with operations in both San Francisco and Los Angeles in the 1930s and 40s. The restaurants were said to be consistently crowded because of the delicious food “prepared by artists of wide reputation.” Dinners cost from $1.35 and up. Lucca was also famous for how it served wines. California vintages – and a few choice wines imported from Italy –were decanted into handsome, colored pitchers. When empty, customers could take the flask home as a souvenir of their night out. Lucca was founded by the Rovere brothers – Ettore, Bert and Mario. Presumably, they named their business after their hometown Lucca, a beautiful city in the region of Tuscany that is still surrounded by well-preserved 16th and century ramparts. Ettore, along with a business partner Innocente Pedroli, had earlier established, in 1924, The Paris Inn Club in Los Angeles, which had singing waiters and artists who would draw sketches of customers at table. Silent film stars Charlie Chaplin and Clara Bow were regular guests. The pair also established the Adam and Eve Bar on East Market Street. Lucca was adept at marketing. This was a souvenir wine list that was mailed to customers and helped advertise the chain’s in-house liquor department, where customers could take home bottles or cases of wine. Lucca also published a pamphlet with its most popular recipes such as risotto or tuna a la Bolognese. World War II had a marked effect on business since both establishments closed in the late 1940s. This visual feast of a menu is from the Ham n Egg Corner, a restaurant in the 1950s and 60s that served customers on Broadway and 51st street in New York. Fortuitously, it was in the epicenter of the city’s jazz scene - practically across the street from the famous jazz club Birdland -and musicians playing there and at other venues nearby on 52nd street adopted the Ham n Egg Corner as their after-hours rendezvous. The peak hour was apparently 3am as sets wrapped up and band members trickled in with their various instruments to sit at the red linoleum tables and wind down over a plate of ham n eggs. Inventive, charming and clever, this illustration is everything we love about vintage menu art. The graphics feature cute pigs (including one with wings, so pigs really do fly) and busy and efficient chickens, clucking their way to the plate. Specials are given their own vignettes: ham n eggs: the bite that’s rite mornin, noon and night. The owner was kitchenware distributor and restaurant designer I Arthur Ganger who operated another whimsical New York restaurant the "Bird in Hand" which specialized in fried chicken. Joseph Sylvester Opferman (1904 - 1992) was the uncredited creative genius behind all of Arthur Ganger's restaurants in New York and Los Angeles. Responsible for all design and illustrations on menus, his whimsical humor is still a joy to behold Courtesy Private Collection. The Studio Cafe in Burbank was the place to go for everyone who was working on the Warner Bros. studio lot. Prices were good (the most expensive items being Imported Natural Gooseliver, Virginia Ham and Smoked Turkey at $1) and the location was convenient which kept the talent near the set. And what an amazing place to see the stars! Whoever brought this menu home recorded the names on the back of the menu of actors who were seen at lunch that day, including, Bette Davis, Stu Erwin, Ida Lupino, John Garfield and Gary Cooper. Legendary Film director Howard Hawks (Scarface (1932), Bringing Up Baby (1938), Only Angels Have Wings (1939), His Girl Friday (1940), To Have and Have Not (1944), The Big Sleep (1946), Red River (1948), The Thing from Another World (1951), Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), and Rio Bravo (1959) was also in the cafe. About A great original vintage porcelain over metal sign reading "Our Steaks and Chops are Charcoal Broiled" and dates from the 1930s. Was hung up in a steakhouse restaurant or diner. Would go great in any vintage style restaurant. The sign has chips around the edges as seen in the photos. No creases, no tears, no dents and no folds. The color is nice for its age. The porcelain is very thick. Measures: approx. 18" wide by 14" tall.
