Goethe found he prefered to arrange colour in the form of a triangle. It is arranged in some ways like the colour circle but I agree with Johann, the the triangle is good because you can isolate the groups more easily. I'm not sure if I agree with the names of each of the groupings - but it is easy to see the colour groups. How can yellow, orange and green be called 'serene' for goodness sake?! I find my taste goes to the 'serious', melancholic' and 'mighty', whatever the latter means.
In this demo of a pastel underpainting, you can see how I establish the value structure, while leaving the process open for spontaneous effects.

The artist and the photographer see the mysteries and the adventure of experience in nature. ~Ansel Adams In my life I have been blessed with some great teachers. Some I've gotten to work with for an extended period of time and others ... it may be brief, but just as impactful. This was the second year I've done Richard McKinely's 3 day pastel workshop in Ojai and once again I got so much out of it! Last year I missed my Italian midterm so I could attend! He is so generous with his knowledge (both in technique and in theory) as well as with his time and energy. He is also very supportive of everyone in the group, regardless of where you land on the experience scale. If you are a pastel artist, I would highly recommend his workshops, (he travels all over) as well as his book Pastel Pointers. Can you tell I am a huge fan? :) I wanted to run off with his pastel box. Just look at those yummy colors!!! Seriously though, I want a Heilman Box. They are the Mac Daddy, Ferrari of wooden pastel boxes. I cut out a picture of one from the Pastel Journal magazine and pasted it on my vision board. I am working on it! Richard doing a demo the first afternoon in the Ojai Nature Preserve. Getting in the big shapes ... This is his sketchbook of Thumbnails. Good idea to make a small thumbnail to see how the composition will work before you commit to your field sketch. You can also see his value (light and dark) thumbnail and his "Notan" on the bottom left, which is the composition simplified down to only black and white. Preparation people!! ;) please click to enlarge if you need to better see what's going on! Getting into a little more detail ... Finished field sketch ... The light was kind of crazy out there to photograph. It was a beautiful little pastel painting! ta daaaaa!!! Field Sketch by Richard McKinley In nature there are few sharp lines. ~A.R. Ammons Richard's pastel box again. Can't get over it. That afternoon we did our own field sketches (I will share later) then the next morning he did another demo, a larger piece, working from his field sketch. This time he worked on mounted Wallace paper and did a watercolor underpainting. Check out this underpainting! It's already so gorgeous and yummy before he even puts any pastel on it!! And here is the almost finished piece. I say almost because I think he added a couple of little things but it was pretty close to being finished. Sorry it's slightly blurry. If you ever get to see his work in person, it's absolutely gorgeous and the light sings! Sings, I tell you! It's as if light is emanating from the piece. Pastel by Richard McKinley To see more of Richard McKinley's work click HERE. Every year we have a little pizza and vino night and he does a slide show of his work. This piece HERE, is one of my favorite pieces! If you are interested in seeing my post from last year, out at Lake Casitas, click here. His blog Pastel Pointers Blog is very informative, so if you are into pastels or plein air painting, definitely check it out! Art will never be able to exist without nature. ~Pierre Bonnard

An artist's studio doesn't have to be large and elaborate but should be separate and sacred, a place for painting, thinking and creativity--an atelier where artistic magic happens.
'Another Peaceful Day' 9x12 pastel ©Karen Margulis sold The possibilities are endless. I approach each blank piece of paper with eager anticipation. I feel empowered. I am about to create something from nothing. Hopefully it will be something compelling, or interesting or beautiful. It is up to me. I have the power to take a scene and create the mood I wish to express. And I don't have to be true to the scene. I can tweak it if I want. I can make a landscape look bright and sunny. I can make it gray and moody. I can change the season or time of day. It's such a wonderful thing to be an artist! There are many ways to create a mood in a painting but one of my favorite techniques is a simple four value underpainting. The mood is created by the colors that are selected for the underpainting. color blocks to help evaluate underpainting colors There is no right or wrong color to choose for the underpainting. Each choice will result in a different feeling to the painting because the underpainting colors will peek through the top layers. This will effect how the top layers will appear. For example warm colors underneath tend to create a sunnier, warmer feeling. How do we choose the underpainting colors? Practice. The more we experiment and try different underpainting colors, the more intuitive our choices will become. Practice!! Color Studies and Color Blocks are a quick way to judge how an underpainting color will appear. Choose a color and pick 4 values of the color. Make little blocks of color on a scrap piece of paper the same color as the paper you will paint on. Now choose the colors you might use for your top layers. Lightly layer the top colors over the underpainting blocks. Think of theses as quick test strips. It is better to try out colors in small blocks than experiment on your painting! ( I learned this great tip from Doug Dawson) For the marsh painting in this post I wanted a moody, gray day feeling. When evaluating possible underpainting colors I decided the Red Violets gave me the mood I was after. I blocked in the painting with four values of Red Violet. You can see it peek through and unify the whole painting. TRY THIS: Cut 4-8 small pieces of paper. 4x6 or 5x7. Find a simple subject. Do at least 4 paintings using a different color for the underpainting in each study. Allow 15 minutes for each study. Compare your studies....what mood or feeling did each color create?
Do you wonder what I would be doing with Citra Solv cleaner and the National Geographic magazine on my quilt art blog? I have been making wonderful embellishments and soon to be original fabric. You won't believe how easy this is and how beautiful the results are. Supplies: National Geographic magazine, not older than 10 years ago Citra Solv, in the bottle, but not the spray old paint brush, I used one of my kids brushes small container to be thrown out after old newspapers transfer paper to transfer image to fabric, or whatever method you prefer Steps: Gather your citra solv, small container, magazine and brush. Pour a small amount of the citra solv into the bottom of the container. Opening the magazine, skip past the beginning pages, end pages and any pages with text. They don't work. You are only going to want to paint the pictures that take up either the whole page or a good chunk of it. When you find some photos, simply dip your brush in the citra solv and paint the picture. Continue through the magazine painting pictures as you go. Once you have finished painting the book, close it up and leave for 20-30 minutes. Check every 10 minutes to ensure things are working. You should start to see the pictures looking similar to mine below. When you get to the point that you are really loving the pages, simply rip them out and let them dry on old newspapers. Once your gorgeous creations have dried, they will be ready to use. I plan to get some of that photo transfer paper and scan my pages in and print them onto the paper and iron them on fabric. I will also try and run the fabric sheets through the printer too. I plan to make a few small art quilts and stitch right onto the paper. Here are some samples of my work. I have not forgotten about doing a post on how I attach the lego to my art quilts either. Is anyone going to give this citra solv tutorial a try, or is anyone interested in winning some of these art sheets?

George Inness (1825 - 1894) was one of the top American landscape painters known for his ability to depict atmosphere, mood and emotion through his paintings. His paintings are very unique and few artists seem to have been able to produce some atmospheric displays. He was a figurehead of what is known as the tonalist movement. The

One could describe Mana Morimoto's embroidered photographs as an unconventional form of collage. The Tokyo-based artist, who was educated in the US but returned to Japan just a few years ago, finds vintage photos and re-imagines them with her technicolor thread. While many of her subjects have lasers coming out of their eyes, Morimoto's way of working is intentionally low tech. Each piece contains evidence of the hand-done process. Lately, Morimoto has been making abstract woven patterns with a psychedelic symmetry, departing from her usual figurative subjects. Take a look at some of her recent work after the jump.
