About The Artwork This painting is a meditation on the impact of isolation on mental health during the recent pandemic. The lack of communication inflicted by the mask has trapped the wearer in an isolated landscape. The dark mask forms a jagged veil between her and the rest of the world. Her face can be glimpsed through the dark material but her mouth is a silent red gash. Creases of material on her shoulder have formed a hostile mountain range, magnifying her isolation, while the planes of her face have formed their own loose landscapes. A storm rages within the realms of her mind and while there is the suggestion of an ear, a hint of cheekbone, only the eye is defined, the green blue of the iris reflecting the world she no longer experiences. NB no black paint was used. The colours have been mixed from a limited palette. There are a lot of issues in today's society. Addiction to social media, devaluation of workers, unhealthy lifestyles, and that's just a few of them. A lot of us don't even notice these problems; we either ignore them or don't run into them at all. However, artist John Holcroft tackles them head-on and illustrates the issues of today's world in his satirical and honest art.

Abstract truths and concrete reality are where John Dykstra strives to create photographs. At first, people may confuse Dykstra’s work as images and not photographs, but they would be wrong. I like to use three words when dealing with content developed with a camera. The first is "picture", which to me is something that was just snapped with no real effort made to create art.
About The Artwork In this work, I capture the raw emotion of loneliness and anxiety. The acrylic paints allow me to capture the intensity and urgency of the moment. With realistic representation, I explore the human condition, with the face appearing trapped by a translucent layer that suggests both protection and isolation. This painting will bring a powerful energy into your home, encouraging you to reflect on your vulnerability and strength. Another note about this series- If you were to look back in my archives, you would note that all the settings for these photographs are places I have shot before as straight landscapes. It has been interesting to see these same places brought to a more human scale by the addition of the chair. One can step into the image more readily somehow, and, if so inclined, "have a seat."
