Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. So I have propped myself up on my fainting couch, where I’ve been convalescing for days, stricken by some kind of viral scourge that has left me coughing like an escapee from an Edwardian TB sanatorium, just long enough to wanly fling some picspam out here before collapsing again under another paroxysm of hacking, because these are just too wonderful to wait until I am more fully recovered. Plus I am really terrible at being sick—pretty much as bad as I am at sleeping—and I get bored with the whole thing after about the first 24 hours, so thank Weirsus here are these amazing photos that will probably do more to cure me than any amount of rest anyway. BRB shoving the fainting couch back in the attic... But first: ICYMI, which IDK how that could even be possible since I keep embedding it everywhere and have probably personally emailed it to everyone I’ve ever met as well, but yay here you are, and even if you didn’t miss it, it’s worth rewatching a time or two or twelve: the official trailer for To Russia With Love was released on Tuesday! And it is beautifully done: Please share everywhere. This film is so important and not to be missed. Video link. And yes, of course we have a transcript and a few screencaps: Announcer: Russia’s new law banning propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations to minors has created an international backlash. Title overlay: To ignorance...with compassion Mark Tewksbury: It’s taken a long time, but I do feel like Sochi is a bit of a tipping point. Title overlay: To brutality...with strength Johnny: It matters to you that your Olympics is going to be in a country that thinks of you not as a real part of society. Belle Breckhoff: You can take it quite personally. We should have kissed. I think that would have been a very big, history-making sort of thing. Title overlay: To fear...with courage Vladislav Slaviskiy: They attack me every evening... Title overlay: Some athletes stand for more than gold. (Female voice): This could have been the raised fist in protest. Johnny: An Olympic flame isn’t going to change the world. You have to change the world yourself. To Russia With Love. Johnny and Vlad. Speaking with Belle Breckhoff. “An Olympic flame isn’t going to change the world... ...You have to change the world... ...yourself.” While I love everything about the trailer, to me the moment with the most visual impact is the single second right before the screencap above. It happens here, from 00:42 to 00:43... ...as Johnny, seen only in shadow, performs on the ice under the impassive gaze of a Russian officer. And just to be clear: pretty much the entire time that Johnny was being criticized mercilessly for his decision to go to Sochi, he was secretly working on this project. So that months after the Games were over, the vodka-poured-in-the-streets protests long abandoned, and his critics off on other tangents, his efforts could help ensure that the spotlight would once again be focused on this human-rights issue enveloping a country he loves with all his heart. Because the world might forget. But he would not. Johnny Returns to Russia! 10-09-2014. At Sheremetyevo, where fans who have not seen him for two years await his arrival... OK, first you have to watch the video, even if you already watched it earlier today, because this: @misfitmimes @JohnnyGWeir That was very, very sweet. How to say this...so much love & mutual respect in one place. Just so lovely to see! ♡ — Berry Glitterfairy (@kiichigo82) October 9, 2014 So here you go: Video link. And now, the picspam! The photos in this first series are all exclusives from my dear friend Elena Vasileva, who not only took a zillion pics for Johnny’s fans around the world to enjoy, but also brought him a basket of her own beautiful homemade pirozhki. She explains: “In Russia, we have an old tradition—we meet the most dear guest with bread-and-salt. But there is something even better: pirozhki!” Accompanied, of course, with flowers. And Starbucks. ♥ A beautiful bouquet ready and waiting for Johnny... ...and he loves it! Chatting with fans... (Elena says here he is describing what a hard worker Evgeni Plushenko is on the ice.) ...and also being a good listener, as always. (Yay Starbucks!) With gorgeous sunflowers from Tatiana Edrenkina! Getting things packed up to go, as his driver has been waiting patiently... With all his gifts, including the basket of pirozhki... ....and a really big smile. On his way! This series is from Anastasiya Bochkareva’s fabulous gallery and her Facebook album, which she titled, “Sweet memories.” Beautiful, smiling, and presumably coherent (in Russian) after spending all night on an airplane. I love this. And this. Apparently a moment of serious business. Group pics! Via Anastasiya’s Facebook. Left to right: Liza Simakina, Elena Vasileva, Vera Chayko, Irina Volkova, Johnny, Tatiana Edrenkina, and Nadia Vasilyeva. And this time Elena takes the pic so Anastasiya can be in it (far left)! Via Facebook. And now he’s really on his way. UPDATE!! New exclusive photos series from Tatiana Edrenkina! Gifts of love await Johnny, among them beautiful sunflowers from Tatiana... ...and delicious pirozhki from Elena! He’s here!! Please do click for larger view so you can see the look on his face. ♥ A special gift from Liza Simakina. Tatiana explains: “She gave him her collection of figure skating stamps from all over the world, including the countries of which existence we didn’t even know. That was a wow! moment.” Johnny takes his time to savor this amazing gift. And then one more photo before he’s off to his waiting car. Bonus pics!! Via a very appreciative Johnny: “Moscow Baby! Thank you to my beautiful ladies who greeted me at Sheremetyevo!” Via Johnny: “Flowers and coffee, the way to my heart!” Bonus video!! Johnny. Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. Please do click twice for full-size view. Gorgeous. When we allow ourselves to exist truly and fully, we sting the world with our vision and challenge it with our own ways of being. — Thomas Moore So Johnny’s on his way to Taipei to perform in the incredible Artistry on Ice tour, on a flight that began just after midnight Monday night and will end about 13 hours later early Wednesday morning in Taiwan, which sounds like it should be more like 28 hours later, since Wednesday is typically a whole day or so after Monday, except that it isn’t when you’re flying to Asia, although I’m guessing it may sort of feel like a 13-hour week, which makes travel math sound like skating math, which brings us to the news from more than 13 hours prior to his takeoff, which is that the ISU released the Grand Prix list (full announcement here) for the upcoming season and Johnny wasn’t on it. Which caused a great disturbance in the Cabal best summed up in the complicated way of the Internet as: :( However, all is not lost! :) Though it’s fairly complicated since this is, of course, skating. :/ So here’s the thing, based on sources available to me at this moment / no warranties implied or expressed / your mileage may vary: (1) Johnny’s absence from the list is not an overt diss from the ISU nor US Figure Skating as far as I know, and as much as it would please me to blame them. Instead, I’m left with blaming them for the fact that it’s June but here in Chicago it’s March, because the temperature is 42 degrees as I write this and that’s a number I don’t like so therefore it must somehow be their fault because I don’t like a lot of their numbers. And it’s numbers that led to his non-appearance on the list, from what I understand via people far more learned than I in the obscure patois of Sanskrit, hieroglyphs, and advanced theoretical math (theoretical as in it bears little resemblance to the actual reality that it supposedly quantifies Denis Ten) that is figure skating these days, the pertinent number in question being this: Because his last season was cut short and he did not complete a full GP event—meaning skate both a short and long program (since he had to withdraw from Rostelecom after the short, and Finlandia is not a GP event)—he did not accumulate the international competition points necessary to be placed on this year’s GP list. (2) Despite that, he remains in USFSA’s ISP (International Selection Pool, not Internet Service Provider, though I’d love to imagine the content Johnny might offer in that capacity...), meaning that he is still among the “athletes being considered for an international competition.” (3) So he could, as I understand it, fill a TBA slot on the GP list. Many seem to think that the open spot at Skate America MIGHT be a possibility. (4) And there is still a path to Sochi for him even without the GP. This is apparently a two-pronged effort, involving (a) accumulating enough international competition points through non-GP senior B events such as Finlandia, Nebelhorn Trophy, Golden Spin of Zagreb (I am not making this up but I feel like I am), etc., to be eligible, and (b) working his way to US Nationals through sectional and regional competitions and placing well at Nats in order to be chosen for one of the two US Oly team men’s spots. For more on the topic, please see this discussion on Johnny’s Facebook fan page and try to follow along without getting a migraine. So! For all who still long to see Johnny compete for one more glorious season, ending with his appearance in Sochi, it is likely too early for black armbands and drunken choruses of “Dirty Love.” At the same time, there also are many other factors involved in this intense and complicated journey, and many decisions that lie ahead. Ultimately only Johnny can make the choices that are best for him, while his fans around the world offer their love and support all along the way. In the meantime, he’s got a summer full of exhibition skating for all of us to enjoy, which thus far includes four performances with Artistry on Ice in China, three with Fantasy on Ice in Japan (yay for Victor accompanying him and celebrating their birthdays with Japanese fans in July!), and Sun Valley on July 13 and August 31. If you have a chance to attend any of these, DO IT. Seeing Johnny perform live is a breathtaking and unforgettable experience that is truly not to be missed. And here to remind us of that are videos from his performances over the weekend in Oakland: His “Black Swan.” So beautiful. Video link. Born This Way. Absolutely love it. Video link. Johnny at his photo shoot for Refinery29 on Wednesday. Photo posted by @geordypearson (please go there now and read all the comments): “Shot legendary figure skater @johnnygweir for @refinery29 today. Dude is epic.” Lovelovelove this whole look. So lately I’ve been judiciously not blogging on Thursdays because it’s pretty much become Johnnyday, in which we eagerly devour his latest Falls Church News-Press column (UPDATE: today's column is fascinating!) and also squee over his recent fondness for posting multiple Throwback Thursday pics, but yesterday dude was epic at his Refinery29 shoot, and so clearly these pics had to be posted immediately whilst we await dude’s actualfax photos on Refinery29’s site. But first, there was additional awesomeness yesterday as Johnny announced that he’s now among the celebrity clients of Premiere Speakers Bureau, whose remarkable and wide-ranging roster includes Anderson Cooper (love him); Tony Mendez, the author of Argo, who was portrayed by Ben Affleck in the Oscar-winning film; outstanding documentarian Ken Burns; executive chef Marcus Samuelsson, whom we recently saw on Johnny’s episode of Chopped All-Stars; Virgin CEO/maverick Richard Branson; and quite a few Olympians, including Rowdy Gaines, Nastia Liukin, and Jackie Joyner-Kersee (and, yes, Scott Hamilton, but he’s not my fav so he gets no link. Also a surprising number of ultra-conservative speakers—Mike Huckabee, Michelle Duggar, a bunch of Fox News people I don’t like—who really ought to be in a group photo with Johnny exactly as seen above because that would be the most fabulousness they’ll ever have the privilege of encountering in their lives. Although actually that would be true even if he was wearing sweats and a baseball cap). Johnny’s bio page includes video of his wonderful HRC Visibility Award acceptance speech, and also notes that his speaking topics include motivation and empowerment, self-empowerment, facing fears, sports and pressure, and my personal favorite: “Family Values.” YES. PERFECT. LOVE IT. Eat that, Smuckers. So I’m thrilled to see him add this to his résumé (note that his Twitter bio was recently updated to include “Public Speaker”), and I can’t wait to buy tickets to see him speak anywhere, anytime, on any subject. But especially on family values. This will inspire so many! Johnny, sparkling light reflected on his face. Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. This was clearly a milestone week in LGBT sports. On Monday, the NBA’s Jason Collins became the first active male athlete in a major US team sport to come out. On the heels of his courageous announcement came the news that he had already been signed to an endorsement deal by Nike, who had recently made it known that they were actively seeking such an athlete, and who had signed newly out WNBA star Brittney Griner just days earlier. Also this week, the National Gay and Lesbian Sports Hall of Fame, founded this spring here in Chicago, announced the launch of its website and Facebook page, and the opening of nominations for the first round of inductees. The nominating form is available here; completed forms can be emailed to [email protected]. According to the press release, chosen honorees will be inducted at a ceremony on August 2 in Chicago as part of the annual “Out at Wrigley Field” festivities. (You know what to do: please download that sucker now and email it ASAP! Here are a bunch of details to help you fill it out.) I hope, of course, that both Nike—which might be interested in making room on its roster for an out gay male figure skater, alongside its partnership with the lovely Ashley Wagner—and the Hall of Fame will truly consider Johnny. As we all know, he is an outstanding career athlete: a three-time US national champion, a two-time Olympian now aiming for his third trip to the Winter Games, a World medalist, and the only skater other than Michelle Kwan to win his sport’s Readers’ Choice Award more than once. Along the way to multiple gold medals, he has been knocked down more than once and had to fight his way back, often battling his own sport for the right to compete and live on his own terms. He officially came out in his autobiography, Welcome to My World, more than two years ago, and remains the only actively competing elite skater to have done so since 1996. Though, as he notes in his powerful must-read column this week for FCNP, “Out,” he was never really in the closet, since those in his closest circle have always simply accepted him for who he is. Johnny has garnered numerous LGBT awards in the past several years, both for his activism and for simply living his life out and proud, offering hope and inspiration to people of all ages. In addition—and in contrast to his reputation for being loudly “flamboyant”—he has quietly been reaching out to those who struggle with self-acceptance since before he was officially out. One of the most poignant articles I’ve ever read is this 2010 piece in Slate, by the parent of a child attending a private camp for other young boys like himself—“a trip to a planet where we’re normal,” as the parent gratefully observes: The face of a young man in a baseball cap fills the screen at the center of a circle of 30 or so children. “It’s Johnny!” they yell, meaning Johnny Weir, the “flamboyant,” figure-skating Olympian. The kids are part of an annual gathering of gender-variant and transgender kids—kids born boys who look and act like girls. Outside of this camp weekend, it’s rare for them to hear “how great I think you all are … being true to yourselves,” as Weir tells them. He says he loves the electric-blue spandex suit with the lime-green lightning bolt designed by one boy. He tells a 6-year-old that, no, he doesn’t have a girlfriend, but one day he would like to have a family of his own. And, yes, “Bad Romance” was his favorite song to skate to. “I’ve fallen,” he tells them, referring to the ice, not sin. “I’ve screwed up. The thing is, just sparkle so much that nobody notices. Yeah, that’s it. Sparkle! We’ve got to sparkle!” Welcome to the guarded world of families with gender-variant kids, where a word like sparkle can move you to tears. Earlier that year, of course, there was his unforgettable press conference at the Vancouver Olympics, in which he addressed the homophobic remarks of Canadian broadcasters who had sniggered during the men’s competition that Johnny should undergo gender testing to confirm that he was a man. His response, full of honesty, courage, and humor, is a testament to grace under pressure on one of the sporting world’s biggest stages. Though he was admittedly “pissed” at the comments, his main concern in confronting the broadcasters was this: I don’t want, 50 years from now, more young boys and girls to have to go through this sort of thing and to have their whole life basically questioned for no reason other than to make a joke. ... I hope more kids can grow up the same way that I did, and more kids can feel the freedom that I feel to be themselves and to express themselves. That’s the most important thing, and that’s the message that I wanted to come out of this, because out of ugly, I think the most important thing in life is to make something beautiful. Nearly a year later, and a few weeks after his book was published, Johnny received his 2010 Readers’ Choice Award, standing in front of the skating world at the 2011 US Nationals for the first time as a publicly out skater. In his acceptance speech, he again offered encouragement to those whom others seek to disenfranchise, both inside and outside his sport: Always believe in yourself, and never be afraid to fall down. … I’m so proud of everything that I’ve accomplished; I’m so proud of everything that I’ve won, and that I’ve lost. And I can stand here and be happy and be excited about it, because I did everything on my own terms. I want the skaters of the future never to feel pressured or marginalized, or told what to do, or who to be, or what to skate to, or what NOT to wear. I want everyone to believe in themselves, love themselves, and stand here in ten years and be proud of where they’ve gotten. Johnny is still the only sports role model out there for “pink boys,” the only one proudly embodying the message that you can grow up to be a real man who loves pretty things, competes in the Olympics, and marries the dude of your dreams. As the only American male athlete in any sport to marry his boyfriend while actively competing, Johnny and Victor—whose own story is equally compelling and really, really needs to be told in a book that I would buy instantaneously—are essentially the (handsome and endearing) poster couple for marriage equality in the US sports world, and beloved by fans even in places where homosexuality is met with disapproval and prejudice, like China and Russia. In the wake of Collins’ announcement on Monday came a tsunami of Internet reaction, including dozens of photo galleries acknowledging LGBT athletes who had gone before—all of which included Johnny, of course. One of my favorites, “10 Awesome LGBT Athletes,” gave dry facts and figures about nine athletes before swooning into fangurl mode over Johnny. In the midst of the (totally appreciated) gushing was this beautiful sentence: I like to think that people like Johnny Weir are the future of everything. I do too. Pointing the way to the future, as beautifully as possible, always... Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. Please click twice for gorgeous full-size image. Kayso Hollywood Game Night was the kind of awesome that reminds me all over again why I loved Be Good Johnny Weir so much, and why the world needs a lot more Johnny on TV. (Or in the movies. Or on a 24-hour webcam that follows him everywhere. Whatever. I’m not picky.) But you don’t have to take my word for it. Here’s just a brief sample of what everybody else said. IDK if this person was even watching the show or not. Nor does it matter. live every day like you’re johnny weir — glennieglennie (@glennieglennie) July 18, 2014 NBC Photo Gallery More pics here! Team Evan! (Seriously? Yep.) Johnny, Wynonna Judd, Krysten Ritter, and contestant Evan. On the show, Evan is playing to win $25,000, and each celeb is playing to win $25,000 for the charity of their choice. Watching Team Amy struggle to spell out a movie title with their blocks. Team Evan not having much luck either... Playing Clue-Boom! Selfie with Evan. A Ridiculous Amount of Screencaps! Because how often do we get a whole hour of Johnny on TV! Let’s make the most of it, shall we? Dancing during the opening credits. Nope, he never spilled his drink. Applause for host Jane Lynch. Jane introduces Johnny first among the celebrities: “US national champion figure skater and Olympic broadcaster... ...the graceful Master of the Ice... ...Johnny Weir!” Team Evan getting ready to spell out their first title. Social media loved how Johnny struck a pose with his block each time. Hurrying to get in the right order! Preparing for Clue-Boom! Johnny is helpless with laughter that teammate Krysten Ritter shouted that the annual baseball championship is called the Super Bowl. Johnny’s turn to face the Clue-Boom bowl, which explodes randomly during each round. And no one looks better facing it down than he does. Giving clues to his team. Shoving the bowl toward opponent Nick Swardson and hoping it explodes on him! But the bowl explodes on Johnny! Who has the least over-the-top reaction of anyone. “You’ve been Clue-Boomed!” Jane says... ...to a distraught Johnny. (No, no, he’s acting!) See? He’s fine! Let’s just take a moment to totally forget what they’re doing and appreciate how lovely he looks... ...while Johnny has a shoe moment with Wynonna. Playing “Back to Back,” in which celebs are handcuffed while acting out clues for their teammates. During this round, every answer begins with “h.” Johnny uses his body to illustrate “hunchback”.... ...and “hopscotch.” Evan guesses both first before Amy, so Team Evan gets the points! He looks amazing... ...and he’s having so much fun! He’s yelling the song title “Since U Been Gone” to Team Amy, who ran out of time to guess correctly. Sadly, Team Amy beats Team Evan to compete in the bonus round. Amy chooses Scott Foley to be her partner for the bonus round, and Johnny joins the rest of Team Amy on the floor by their sofa. Watching the final round with his spirit animal Leah Remini. Video!! The full episode! Video link. Thank you @JohnnyGWeir for supporting us on @nbcgamenight last night. Johnny in Sun Valley, Idaho, preparing for his debut performance of Schindler’s List while battling a monster cold, high altitude, and smoky air. Please click twice for amazing full-size image. It’s like you’re standing right there. ♥ Re: recent reports in the press: I was told to ignore everything, but save the bashing and hate for someone who gives a damn, and wait for MY story, coming soon. — Johnny Weir-Voronov (@JohnnyGWeir) September 18, 2013 Here is Johnny in his own words today, in his latest column for the Falls-Church News-Press. While we still await a direct statement from him regarding his future, he addresses the issue here obliquely, through the prism of NYFW and with brutally self-aware honesty—as always. Please read. Some brief excerpts: Growing up skinny, socially awkward and with a weird craft, I always wanted to be cool. I always wanted to be popular ... I wasn’t prepared however, for the flip-side of popularity. I wasn’t prepared that everything you say will have a 50/50 response, that complete strangers hate you for no reason aside from the fact that you didn’t believe the same things they did. I wasn’t prepared. ... Every shooting star has a fleeting moment when everyone can see it, before its luminescence is burned up. I now know what it’s like to be loved and hated on an international scale. My own personal hope is that I continue to grow in a way that helps me understand the mistakes of my life and learn from them, more so than wallow in what might have been or what was. — Johnny Weir Please also see Nicholas Benton’s powerful and thought-provoking national affairs column out this week: “Gay Movement’s Major New Voice.” Nick offers some context/insight into why the self-proclaimed leaders of the US LGBT community have attacked Johnny so viciously for his anti-boycott stance on the Sochi Olympics. A fascinating and eye-opening must-read. To all who have asked me about the news reports regarding Johnny being out of consideration for the Sochi Winter Games: In order to potentially qualify for the Olympic team, Johnny had to register by September 1 to compete in events that would lead to qualifying for the national championships, from which the Oly team is named. He also would need to compete in, I believe, at least one international event to get the technical element scores required to be considered for the Oly team (arcane rules about points/scoring in competitive figure skating are not my forte, as many of you know!). Earlier this week, US Figure Skating confirmed to the Associated Press that he did NOT register for any competitive events by the September 1 deadline. This has exploded into a zillion media stories spun a zillion different ways, while Johnny himself has not responded to requests for comment. His tweet above says he’ll be making a statement soon. Just a reminder, people, that this is happening THIS SUNDAY!!: To be followed next week by a series of giddy blogs. Although none of those may happen if I can't get past the prequel: Binky Ponders What to Wear to Go See Johnny at a Gay Bar, the first entry in our exciting new series: Sentences I Never Thought I'd Write in My Lifetime. Suggestions from Twitter included: (1) Jeans, heels and leather jacket (fabulous! Except for the part where I don't own any heels or leather jackets. And if I ask to borrow Alice's leather jacket, she'll just study me carefully for a moment for other telltale signs of dementia, then pretend she didn't hear me); (2) That timeless standard of elegance: sparkly overalls; (3) Seriously. Invoke the honeybadger fashion rule, throw on some glitter and go (#sparklebadgerdontgiveashit); and (4) It's a Johnny event. Wear whatever you damn well please. I'm going with #4, since "whatever I damn well please" is turning out to be the foundational treatise of my old age. This will likely translate into something similar to another helpful suggestion: jeans and a sweater. Although now I'm standing in my closet staring at stuff and suddenly I don't like a single sweater I own. Wait, doesn't Alice have some cool sweaters? BRB... Johnny at the end of his final Artistry on Ice performance of Born This Way in Beijing last night. Exclusive photo © Joveta Leo. Please click twice for glorious full-size view to see the exquisite detailing on this costume. IMPORTANT NOTE: The livestream of last night’s entire Beijing show is available for viewing here!! Don’t miss this. It’s absolutely amazing. Do be forewarned: It may take forever to load. But it’s sooo worth the wait. Johnny’s appearances are as follows (time codes approximate): Opening group number 00:20:16 Army of Me 01:06:01 Born This Way 02:19:58 Closing group number 02:58:22 UPDATE: Please check out Johnny's new blog post for the US Olympic Team! In "The Beat Goes On...," he discusses what matters to him in choosing music for his programs: I choose music based on feeling. I choose music based on imagination. Most importantly, I choose music that fits my life and the story I want to tell. ... The moment you create is what you’re remembered for, and the music is the soundtrack of that moment. So Johnny is winging his way back home as I write this, to be joyously reunited today with his beloved puppy, and leaving behind him a monumentally successful Artistry on Ice tour that played to an audience of nearly 50,000 people in its four stops. Photos and videos are still pouring out of China and likely will be for weeks to come, thanks to the boundless generosity of Asian fans. So today we present just a sampling of the latest Weibopalooza from the tour, plus a special tribute to Johnny’s dear Asian fans at the end of the blog. But first, before we hit the picspam, please roll around in these must-see videos: Gorgeous HD video of Johnny’s Army of Me performance in Taipei, from the Amway Taiwan YouTube channel... As soon as I track down the source, I’ll update!) More from that never-ending source of amusement, the Shanghai press conference... ...including this fantasy moment, photoshopped from this pic. At the Beijing press conference... ...through which Stéphane apparently slept. From the tour’s closing celebration on the ice after the conclusion of the Beijing show. And one more: wide-eyed (and possibly exhausted) Johnny at the on-ice celebration. Exclusive photo © Joveta Leo. Epilogue: “We Love Johnny Weir.” Johnny fans arriving at the show in Shanghai. The fabulous Joveta Leo, who contributed so many exclusive photos to the blog, is at the far right. Many fans traveled on to see Johnny perform in Beijing as well. Reading the goodbyes to Johnny on Weibo today is breaking my heart. Very early in the morning, after the final show in Beijing the night before, fans came to his hotel lobby, exhausted beyond words from weeks of planning for and anticipating his visit; the thrill of actually seeing him again as he arrived at various airports and train stations; the build-up to the shows with press conference after press conference—each more hilarious than the last, thanks mostly to Johnny and Stéphane; the many encounters in hotel lobbies to greet him and bring him yet more flowers and gifts; and finally, the overpoweringly dazzling excitement of watching him perform and of being part of the huge crowds roaring their appreciation as he skated over for hugs, kisses, and even more flowers—all underlined with the inescapable growing sadness that all too soon, it would be time for him to leave. Johnny holding one of the enormous banners in Taipei, which reads: “We Love Johnny Weir.” From Weibo: “Flowers for Johnny at the press conference in Shanghai. Rose, jasmine, and the one in the center is called ‘Diva.’ Fabulous!!” Fans hung banners in the stadiums for him... ...at every tour stop. Beijing (I think): A red bouquet for Johnny, a pink one for Stéphane. Among the final group of flowers for Johnny in Beijing was this stunning bouquet. Posted by Johnny to his Instagram: “Xie Xie Beijing! I love you!” So they came to the Sheraton at the crack of dawn on Monday to send him off with farewell hugs and fragile smiles. “Seeing Johnny off at Sheraton,” my friend Maria commented on her Instagram. “Sorry about the low quality of pic, so sleepy that I could die.” “Everybody is DYING,” wrote another fan dejectedly as they waited for him to finish checking out. He took time to hug each one, and spoke freely with them, they said, promising with his characteristic wry humor that nothing could prevent him from coming back next year “unless I died!” (or possibly, “...over my dead body!” #NotClearOn) Maria’s photo of Johnny as fans wait to tell him goodbye. “Do not want to sleep, do not want to wake up, because. . . wake up again, it is really over,” wrote one fan. And then he was on his way. “Last year, when he left, I cried all the way to the Beijing railway station, and then I was crying on the train,” another lovely fan posted. “When he left this year... once I saw him again [in the lobby], I calm down a lot, but I’m still so sad he’s gone!!” “It’s so hard to say goodbye,” I agreed with much sympathy. “That was exactly what I said to him last year ╯ ﹏ ╰,” she replied sadly. Some hours later, I found that she had posted this photo of Johnny from the 2010 Olys on her Weibo: ...with this beautiful caption (translated): “Rose-colored memories of you are the most magnificent of my life.” Very special thanks to Joveta Leo for the exclusive photos!! Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. So obviously the whole point of today’s post is to watch Johnny’s Bollywood performance over and over and over, and then take a break to enjoy the pics, and then watch him in the opening and closing group numbers, then go back to the pics, then Bollywood again.... Yes, I see your eyes straying down past this text portion already.... And really, I don’t want to delay you even for a moment. But there’s just one quick thing before I lose you completely to the gloriousness that was everything about Fantasy on Ice in general and Johnny in particular: Johnny’s 30th birthday is just three weeks away!!! So yay, it’s fan project time! This year a very very special fan gift has been chosen for Johnny that we hope he will love, and that we hope expresses in some small way how much his fans love him and how much we will always have his back. In addition to this special item, this year fans also have the opportunity to send Johnny personal birthday messages! Here’s how to join in: (1) To contribute to the special gift, please send PayPal to [email protected]. No amount is too small! Deadline for contributions is tentatively Monday, June 30, but that may be extended if needed. (2) Because this is a special gift that we’d like to remain a surprise for Johnny, the details can’t be posted here on the blog. But please know that it has been chosen with care, and it is beautiful and very Johnny. (3) If contributions exceed the cost of the special gift—which, given the generosity of Johnny’s fans, is very likely—the remainder will go toward a gift card for Johnny. (4) Please include your personal birthday message to Johnny with your contribution. You may include the message on the PayPal form, or, if you need to write something longer than the form allows, you may email your message separately to [email protected]. All the messages will be given to Johnny in a lovely book designed and printed for his birthday. (5) If you’re not able to contribute to the gift but would like to send a birthday message to be included in the book, please feel free to do so! As the big day draws near, we’ll let you know when the gift is on its way to Johnny. If you have any questions about the birthday gift project, please feel free to email me. And now: on to the multimedia magnificence! This year Fantasy on Ice was broadcast live on Japanese television, so we are wonderfully and gratefully awash in video and screencaps. Enjoy! UPDATES!! Brought to You Predictably by Johnny and Stéphane, With Surprising Cameos By Kurt Browning And ... Patrick Chan. Press conference tidbits: From what I could glean from Weibo, the staff had seated Johnny and Kurt together, but either Johnny or Stéphane moved Johnny’s place card so that he could sit next to Stéphane. Kurt pretended to be hurt, with great dramatic flair, and Stéphane just smiled and said, “Bye bye, Kurt!” Apparently at some point either Johnny said “I love you,” to Stéphane, or Stéphane said, “I love you,” to Johnny, or they said it to each other, or someone said something charming and wonderful, and whichever way it was, everyone totally melted. UPDATE: Stéphane said, “I love you, Johnny.” Watch here. #dying Transcription coming soon! After Kurt exited, again with mock drama, Johnny leapt into the arms of Patrick and Stéphane, as you’ll see below. Every photo from this press conference kills me. UPDATE! New photo! Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. Yes, he was amazing! As always. And the 3,300-mile round trip was challenging and entertaining and exhausting, as always, 50+ hours of driving there and back, and whereas last year we took our time returning and made a little vacation out of that part, this time, with circumstances being different, we just went, saw, photographed, and turned around and drove home, though I’m really super-glad I listened to myself and booked an extra day at our hotel in Sun Valley before embarking on the return trip since because not enough caffeine in the world to cover doing it the day after the show, because the meet-n-greet—at which I happily shepherded several first-timers and during which Davey took literally 600+ photos—went on until nearly midnight because EVERYONE stayed to meet Johnny and get a photo because he was AMAZING, and he also was unfailingly patient and gracious to every. last. person., as always, because, as I may have mentioned, he’s amazing. And also a really kind and lovely man. So there’s lots to talk about and tons of photos to get through, and thus multiple posts will be forthcoming to cover every Sun Valley moment in delicious detail, but today we’re doing something a little less massive than we’ve been doing lately here on the blog. Because as wonderful as watching his rehearsal always is, and as brilliant as both his performances were, and as sweet and fun as the meet-n-greet was, it was immediately clear, when he glided out to perform “Human,” that this was something extraordinary. It was absolutely the defining moment of the whole weekend. He skated Bollywood first, a program full of intricate detail and high energy, with him in his exotic costume and makeup, and the audience totally loved it and gave him the biggest applause and cheers of the night thus far. And then he returned late in the show for the US debut of “Human.” He had first performed it in Japan, but no photos or videos were allowed, as is the custom there. All we had were the stunned and heartfelt reactions from Japanese fans, many of whom tweeted that they were moved to tears by his performance. So after a second Sun Valley introduction, he skated to center ice and stopped. And as the music drifted across the cool mountain air, he began to paint, in deep strokes and sharp slices and quick razor cuts, on his glittering and beloved and unforgiving canvas, everything he’s been through in recent months. All the times he’s soldiered on, working hard, keeping his thoughts to himself, silently enduring tremendous private pain and public difficulties not of his making, aware that most people who meet him nowadays know truths and lies about his private life that one would never want broadcast, and yet there it all is, the elephant constantly in every room at every event, which he can never acknowledge or discuss. So instead he put it all on the ice. Raw. Piercing. Unforgettable. And the audience applauded his beautiful jumps and spins, but grew increasingly hushed and still as he skated on. They were utterly mesmerized. And many, like the Japanese, were in tears at the end. And so today we focus on just that moment, in selected photographs of his performance, and—at last—in video. Johnny is a brilliantly gifted artist, an elite athlete who trains far more intensely than many realize, an incredibly hard-working man, a quick wit, well-spoken, hugely entertaining, and very much a larger-than-life figure. It’s easy to forget one of his most defining characteristics, one that we all share with one another, and that all might do well to remember, with kindness and grace, when we are tempted to comment about or judge or criticize or believe highly questionable stories about another person. He is only human. As are we all. “Human” Christina Perri [Lyrics as used in Johnny’s performance cut of the music] I can hold my breath I can bite my tongue I can stay awake for days If that’s what you want Be your number one I can fake a smile I can force a laugh I can dance and play the part If that’s what you ask Give you all I am I can do it I can do it I can do it I can turn it on Be a good machine I can hold the weight of worlds If that’s what you need Be your everything I can do it I can do it I can do it But I’m only human And I bleed when I fall down I’m only human And I crash and I break down Your words in my head, knives in my heart You build me up and then I fall apart ’Cause I’m only human I’m only human I’m only human Just a little human I can take so much ’Til I’ve had enough ’Cause I’m only human And I bleed when I fall down I’m only human And I crash and I break down Your words in my head, knives in my heart You build me up and then I fall apart ’Cause I’m only human Please click any photo twice for the full-size image. Many are huge and exquisitely detailed. They may take a moment to load, but are well worth the wait. Video is embedded below the photos. Ending pose. Video!! Johnny’s “Human” performance, Sun Valley. Johnny hits the ice for his rehearsal in Sun Valley. This is about the happiest he looked the entire time, until he came to greet his waiting fans. The rest of his rehearsal was a quiet and intense tug-o-war between him and illness, fatigue, altitude, and smoky air. Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. Please click for beautiful full-size image. UPDATE: Excerpt from Johnny’s latest column, “Johnny’s World: Make-Up,” for the Falls Church News-Press: As I became more followed and well known, I learned that when you have bad or sad news to break you have to do it thoughtfully, and with process. You have to omit or lie to conceal the truth to the people who don’t know you personally, yet know you quite intimately, just until you’re ready, and while that may seem understandable, it’s still a lie that you must live with on a daily basis until the news can splash forth from your swollen eyes and puffy, reddened face. ... I am someone who speaks from the heart 95% of the time, however, there are moments when I have to omit, fluff, conceal or propaganda the hell out of things. ... These little lies are life’s make-up and while necessary at times, they are exhausting. Starting with myself, I vow to speak from the heart, not the mind, and I’m washing off the make-up. Who’s with me? — Johnny Weir Well, yes, we’re still waiting for a statement from Johnny, although personally I can wait forever or just be OK with him never making a formal statement at all (though I think that’s unlikely). I’m a firm believer in the freedom we all have to make our own choices and live our own lives, respectful of those around us, certainly, but with an equal amount of freedom to so live without defending or explaining anything, ever, to anyone. Just speaking for myself (your mileage may vary), I’m thrilled to have supported his journey up to this point—freely, happily, no strings attached, because everything I’ve done I chose to do as a gift, a small way to say thank you for all the beauty he brings to my world. So I’m just fine to plow ahead, looking forward with excitement to whatever he’s doing next whilst continuing to proffer up extensive picspam along the way, and yay we even have some of that to linger over right now at this very moment, which is good, because judging by my mail, there’s a definite mix of restlessness, confusion, and a tinge of sadness rippling across fandom these days, and there’s nothing like a bunch of Johnny pics to distract us from ourselves. In the meantime, as I mentioned previously, I remain ever so totally appalled at the shrieking hysteria, ugly bashing, and even hate speech that’s gone on the last few months over Johnny’s adamant stance against boycotts of any kind related to the Sochi Olympics—though he’s far from alone in holding that opinion—and supremely disappointed in the US LGBT voices leading the bashing. I’m truly stunned at the lack of tolerance for diversity of opinion from within a community that seeks acceptance by asking the larger community to ... tolerate diversity. As my lovely friend Tatiana Edrenkina succinctly summed up, “So far, it seems, the only person who was able to hear other people’s opinions, was Johnny.” This. For some eye-opening background/context, please see Nicholas Benton’s powerful and thought-provoking national affairs column: “Gay Movement’s Major New Voice,” if you haven’t had a chance to read it yet. And please be sure to check out Nick’s new book, Extraordinary Hearts: Reclaiming Gay Sensibility’s Central Role in the Progress of Civilization, a “compilation of one hundred essays previously published under the noted column ‘Nick Benton’s Gay Science’ from October 2010 through September 2012 on the website of the Falls Church News-Press.” Loved that column, and am excited to catch up on the ones I missed via Nick’s book. For more info, please visit the book's Facebook page. Also, just FYI: Sir Ian McKellen has now added his voice to the anti-boycott chorus (thank you to dear Beatrice Zenk for the link. See also: “Out Actor Ian McKellen Echoes Johnny Weir: Olympic Boycott Would Be ‘Cruel’ To Athletes”). Seriously, if you’ve got Gandalf on your team.... And now, onto the picspam. Because—just speaking for myself again—I need something beautiful today. Johnny in Sun Valley: Rehearsal, Part 1. The following series of photos covers just the first three minutes of Johnny’s rehearsal in Sun Valley. We knew he wasn’t feeling well from his tweets, and he looked pretty miserable throughout, as you’ll see. And his skating was absolutely gorgeous and thrilling, as you’ll also see, though it’s hard to do it justice even with stunning pics and video. Seeing him skate right in front of you, hearing his blades slice through the ice... there’s just nothing like it. As always, please click any photo to open the full-size image in a new tab. These are mostly wondrously huge. Only a few captions, because he was very quiet and very focused, like these photos, and we mostly sat in hushed awe as we watched. Exclusive photos © David Ingogly. Stopping to chat briefly with Brian Boitano and Ryan Bradley. Going into a jump... ...and landing it. With Ryan Bradley and Jozef Sabovcik. And in just three minutes, he’s warmed up enough to shed the jacket and reveal an amazing tank... ...and then he heads back out into the unrelenting Idaho sun... Exclusive video!! Highlights from Johnny’s practice captured by Anastasia Pryanikova. Simply gorgeous... Exclusive Sun Valley photos © David Ingogly. From Johnny’s latest column in the Falls Church News-Press: Growing up skinny, socially awkward and with a weird craft, I always wanted to be cool. — Johnny Weir Read more here. Check the handy clock in the blog sidebar to see when Johnny is! Beautiful Johnny and his ever-present necklace of charms. For super-size photo and a closer look at the charms, please click here. Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. UPDATE! Yes, we have video of Johnny’s commentary on Trophée Eric Bompard! Men’s event here. UPDATE: Women’s event here. (We also have another update: a fab video from Johnny’s Instagram below.) Reminder: Johnny is commentating on all the Grand Prix events!! Tune in to NBC’s coverage of Grand Prix Russia this Sunday, November 24, at 2 pm EST / 1 pm CST. UPDATE! Photo tweeted by Johnny late Saturday night: “Night shift with @taralipinski. Céline Bags akimbo for GP France on NBC, Sunday at 4:30 EST.” So in a fascinating new column for the Falls Church News-Press this week, Johnny revealed some of his spiritual beliefs in “Johnny’s World: I Talk to Spoons, Part 1”: I am not necessarily a God-fearing man; however, I reserve the right to attend a church, believe in a greater existence, pray when I feel like I need someone to listen, and wear religious icons around my neck for protection. I am more of a mystical person. I am a believer in witchcraft, supernatural energy, evil, ghosts, and things that in general can’t and/or aren’t to be explained. I have worked with healers and people with the special ability to see things most can’t for many years. I have worn a red string of protection since before Madonna made Kabbalah a trendy thing. There is so much in this world that can’t be explained by the good book or by science that I have always felt it appropriate to keep an open mind. So his column spurred me to go off on a quest for a recent-ish picture of the charms on Johnny’s necklace because so many fans have asked about them (read more about his necklace on Johnny’s Q and A), and in digging around in the Enormous and Hallowed Archive of Photos I Just Haven’t Gotten Around to Posting Yet Please Don’t Hate, I discovered some fab pics from late last year that are now proudly displayed in this blog post even though they actually have nothing at all to do with the stuff we need to discuss today, which is the unexpected explosion of Johnny-ness that’s headed our direction since apparently he’s not taking that whole “retirement” thing very seriously. So scattered among today’s Important Johnnouncements are a few random photos in a gold-tinged theme because I’ve been feeling nostalgic about all the gold medals he’s won and all the ones he should have won which is always the subtext of any discussion of figure skating in which I might engage and also he looks really pretty. Here’s one now: So first up, we have your weekly Friday reminder, as noted above, that he’ll be on NBC again this Sunday doing commentary on Trophée Eric Bompard. This week’s broadcast is scheduled for 4:30 to 6 pm EST (check local listings), which is shorter than usual and thus guaranteed to further piss off the fans who have already been lamenting (and rightfully so) NBC’s complete lack of pairs and ice dance coverage in their standard weekly segment. Plus we got spoiled last week with two full hours of Johnny (ICYMI: here and here). But still, it’s Johnny on our TVs, which brings me to... ...something so shocking, so unbelievable, and so completely American Horror Story: Coven that I fully expect Jessica Lange to come sauntering through my door next week to join me in witnessing this spectacle to be broadcast from the hell dimension (check local listings) known only as: (eeeeek clutching charms.....) Apparently Johnny is one of the guests on next Thursday’s episode of Bethenny, the eponymous (of course) talk show of one Bethenny Frankel, the mere mention of whom gives me the kind of nightmarish flashbacks that necessitate placing mirrors under the bed (Johnny explains). According to the announcement on her website (yes, I visited it. BRB enjoying another Silkwood-style scrubdown just in case there’s any lingering trace....): “For the first time since they rubbed each other the wrong way on Skating with the Stars, Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir and Bethenny are face to face!” Oh, isn’t that a cute way to put it. For a refresher on the whole Bethenny Outrage Which Lives On Forever In Fandom Infamy, please see the blog archives for November and December 2010. [tl;dr: She refused all advice; announced that she and her partner were skating for “America,” not for the judges; verbally attacked Johnny backstage after one episode in a headline-making incident; told the media she was the woman Johnny wanted to be; and did nothing to discourage her fans from slinging homophobic tweets at Johnny, who took command of the situation as head judge by bitchslapping telling her crisply on live national television: “To me, it’s very clear: You don’t care what we think, and I don’t really care to watch you actually perform anymore because you aren’t listening to our critiques.”] So this should be... interesting. Of course I have no doubt that Johnny can more than hold his own with her, in the most charmingly devastating way possible. Bethenny’s show is syndicated and generally carried on local Fox stations. Per her website, Johnny’s episode is set to air on Thursday, November 21, on Fox 5 in the NYC area at 11 am (in Chicagoland, on Fox 32 at 4 pm). (Desperately hoping for an air date soon for his Dora episode—it’s this? maybe?—as a sort of Bethenny antidote...) OK, clearly we need another photo stat. Apply directly to your entire person. Just to be safe. Johnny, please do feel free to lower your index finger in this pose as needed during photo ops on Bethenny’s show. BEST BIG NEWS: Evgeni Plushenko’s wife, Yana Rudkovskaya, tweeted a poster yesterday for Plushenko’s upcoming post-Sochi tour, scheduled for March and April 2014: And YES, that is Johnny’s name on the list there next to the US flag! The full cast list in English, kindly linked to by @PlushenkoNews on Twitter, includes: Evgeni Plushenko Irina Slutskaya Ilia Kulik Stephane Lambiel Brian Joubert Johnny Weir Tomas Verner Fiona Zaulda & Dmitri Sukhanov Sergei Yakimenko Ekaterina & Alexander Chesna Edvin Marton Nikolai Baskov Dima Bilan Yana Rudkovskaya But the best part is contained in a small snippet of video from a Eurosport interview that Plushenko did last month. Listen closely beginning at about 1:06: “The plan right now: competition. And after the competition, I have tour in Russia, around 40 shows, maybe more, in Japan, China, Korea, maybe United States, Europe. I will be busy.” OMG “MAYBE UNITED STATES” YES PLEASE BRB DAYDREAMING FOREVER.... (although let’s take a short break for this:) And finally, a brief housekeeping note: Please oh please oh please could we get a mediator in to fix the sadly broken relationship between Johnny’s Twitter and his Facebook? His tweets stopped showing up on his Facebook Monday evening, and since then Facebook fans who don’t have Twitter have been languishing in that dark netherworld next door to The Bethenny Hellscape and tragically moaning, “What is he doing and why is he not saying anything...?” FB fans, whilst you continue your desperate vigil of hope, please enjoy this: Random Bonus Round of Random Stuff Two of the best things to come out of SWTS: This gif of Johnny and Uncle Dick... ...and Johnny’s incredible performance in the show’s finale. In what could be the most bitter end of a same-sex celebrity marriage we've seen to date, Johnny Weir went on the record about his split from husband Victor
Content exclusively devoted to all things Johnny Weir until I am able to at least partially recover some semblance of interest in something else.
Johnny at rehearsal in near-darkness. More from this series below! Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. Yes! At last! Johnny's episode of Chopped All-Stars airs THIS SUNDAY at 9 pm EDT! Here's the episode description from Food Network: Four celebrities with different backgrounds, and a shared love of cooking, charge into the Chopped Kitchen. Plain vanilla is something that none of the competitors can relate to, but can they skillfully use vanilla cupcakes to create appetizers as one-of-a-kind as they are? Then something crispy and something jiggly make the main course a study in contrasts. And when two entertaining cooks proceed to the final round, they put on a performance with circus peanuts and curry powder. And here are a few screencaps from the 30-second spot that's been airing on Food Network this week: Johnny with (left to right): judge Ted Allen and fellow celeb competitors Joey Fatone, Laila Ali, and Judy Gold. And yay we have video! Video link. Here's a longer sneak peek with more Johnny! Video link. UPDATE: Yes! We rock! Johnny remains in 1st place as of Friday, 04/26! Please continue voting up to 10x/day from every available device / browser here. Go Johnny!! And please be sure to tune in THIS SUNDAY, April 28, at 9 pm EDT to see Johnny in Chopped All-Stars on Food Network! Please continue to tweet Nike randomly to voice support for a Johnny / Nike partnership, and thank you to all who have felt inspired to do so! While we realize that Nike proactively seeks athletes to sponsor, as their website notes, that's pretty much our point: they're actively looking for an out gay athlete, according to reports, and we know the perfect candidate! Really, we're just being helpful, like a sort of Christian Mingle for Corporations Who Want A Half-Jewish Gay Partner. #winning #JustDoIt News from the competitive figure-skating world (oh yeah. That. Excuse me a moment while I grab my pocket protector and my calculator since skating is incomprehensible and deeply unsatistfying math these days Dennis Ten...): So US Figure Skating posted the updated ISP list recently, which prompted many of us to rack our brains again on Twitter trying to remember what ISP stands for ("Ice Skating People?" "International Skating Problems?" [*side eyes at International Skating Union dark overlord president Ottavio Cinquanta*] "Icky Stupid Protocols?"...) as we also noted with a sigh of relief that Johnny's name is on the list ("Johnny's an Internet Service Provider? Sign me up!"). As the USFS notes as drily as possible without actually shriveling up and blowing away, "The 2013-14 International Selection Pool (ISP) includes most Team A, B and C age-eligible athletes and any other athletes being considered for an international competition." So yay! It's the first step in gearing up for next season for which I am in no way emotionally prepared... ! And finally: This poster popped up on Twitter and Facebook Wednesday in all its dual awesomeness: (1) This is the advertisement for the after party for the Delaware Valley Legacy Fund's "Heroes" event, at which Johnny is receiving the DVLF National Hero Award, and (2) they used a Davey photo! There's still time to buy tickets; more info on the DVLF website! Which brings us to today's random picspam: The Fire & Ice logo reminded me to dig out this brief series of photos we have from a December rehearsal in which the rink was basically pitch-black for a while. Always a challenge photographically, sometimes those conditions cause the camera to interpret what little light it can register as reds and golds. The result: Johnny skating and dancing on ice the color of fire... Johnny first appears on the ice. Exclusive photos © David Ingogly. Bonus pupdate pics!! Togo and Tyoma, tweeted by Victor: "They love each other." ♥ Tweeted by ayukovon in response to Johnny's bout with food poisoning this week. Tweeted by ayukovon. Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. Kayso yesterday was a day in which I drove across the entire width of this state and back to retrieve some things from the attic of a place where I stored a bunch of stuff and which is now completely infested with bats. Because my life is really horrifyingly nightmarish interesting like that, and this is the sort of thing you do when you’re me. Other people might spend the day at, say, a normal job, or perhaps enjoying a random late-summer day off, or helping their children get geared up for back-to-school, or buying tickets to attend every upcoming Johnny event (see above!), or simply posing in a window and looking amazing against a cityscape backdrop: Via Johnny: “I ❤️ NY because a nightgown can pass as dinner attire.” I did this. As longtime readers of this blog may recall, bats are not my favorite. Fortunately there’s still tons of stuff left over from Artistry on Ice that is. So please enjoy this new incredible collection of favorites, mostly off-ice Johnnnyness from China, including a ton of videos that will leave you smiling for the rest of the day—a day in which hopefully you, at least, are not doing anything that requires using the word “guano” in a sentence. But first: we begin with current events—or current to me, since I’m still catching up on yesterday.... Anatomy of a Photo Shoot On Tuesday Johnny did what appears, from every angle, to be an epic photo shoot for his Sundance / EPIX documentary, To Russia With Love, which premieres October 22. A portion of Johnny's BBC interview will air TODAY, Thursday, Oct. 17, on BBC Radio 5 Live at 7:30 pm UK time (2:30 pm EDT / 1:30 pm CDT) in a segment titled, “Sochi — the Protest Games.” You should be able to listen live here (just click “Listen” at the top of the page), and a podcast also should be available at that link after the show. Live feed also available on BBC 5 Live’s main page. Don’t miss it! UPDATE: Downloadable podcast now available! Listen below, on the BBC Radio 5 Live website, on the podcast website, or here. UPDATE: Yes, we have a transcript of Johnny’s portion of the broadcast! Plus some remarks from the other panelists in the studio with Eleanor: British journalist Matthew Syed of the Times, and Jacquelin Magnay of the Telegraph and the Australian. [Beginning at about 14:30] Eleanor Oldroyd: Let’s move on and hear from one of the key figures in the show tonight: His name is Johnny Weir, and I think it’s best I let him introduce himself. Johnny: Hi, I’m Johnny Weir. I am an author, I’m a television personality, I’m an American, I’m a gay, an athlete ... I’m a father to a beautiful puppy, I’m very sparkly, but I’m best-known as a two-time Olympic figure skater for the United States of Amerifunk. EO: He is a larger-than-life character, Johnny, one of the most flamboyant figure skaters on the circuit, a former US national champion, and a competitor in both Vancouver and in Turin, where his short program where he dressed as a swan and performed to the music of Camille Saint-Saëns inspired rapture—or outrage, depending on your point of view. Now, he came out after Vancouver ... and Johnny told me he is firmly against a boycott. JW: I find that the boycott, and a lot of these crazy things that people are saying that should be done about Russia, and should be done about the Olympics in particular, are asinine. I watched my mother work at jobs that were far beneath her just to fund my costumes for a year, or my music editing for a year. I watched my father work a shift from 10 pm until 6 am just so that we could make ends meet at times. If I were to give up all of those things that they sacrificed—in addition to my own: I didn’t have a normal childhood, I don’t have a normal life now, for the most part—for all of those sacrifices, to just throw it away, is ridiculous. To make a point, you have to be present. You can’t sit in America in your penthouse in New York and boycott vodka because you think it’s going to hurt Russia. It hurts the people who work in Russian factories if you boycott vodka. And that could include gay people. So my opinion of the boycott is just that it’s the most ridiculous way to fix the situation. EO: And as far as the IOC are concerned, do you think that they support gay athletes in the way that they should do? JW: The IOC has never banned me from competing in any event—not that I was out gay. You know, as far as the IOC’s concerned, I was never denied access to a country or competition. The IOC should be trying to request from Russia our safety, and the safety of fans coming to support us, the safety of family—the IOC should be trying, but the IOC is not a government. The IOC has no real right to tell a sovereign nation what to do. The IOC is a foundation. It’s a committee. They can’t really do that much. The Olympics are a moment where the world does come together, but it’s also a place where people use the world’s attention to make a point. And I worry that in Sochi, in Russia, that if it isn’t one thing, it’ll be another, and it will completely destroy the Olympic movement and the pure good that the Olympics is. Of course I’m not Russian, I don’t know what it’s like to be living in Russia at the moment and be gay, but we [Americans] tend to run with things and dramatize things very much. I’ve been in Russia many times, even before I was famous there, and I was always gay. I always had a handbag with my stuff in it. I always looked like a gay person. And being gay in Russia—I mean, my coach actually said [imitates Galina]: “Johnny, you know, we don’t have any gays in Russia.” And I said, “Yes, you do. You have lots of them. And they’re everywhere. They’re on your television, they’re taking over your supermarket. We’re everywhere.” And she said, “Well, then, we don’t talk about it. We don’t think about it.” So, while this law was passed, and it’s a terrible law, it isn’t so different from what life was before the law—aside from now that hooligans have the opportunity to be legally backed up to beat up and terrorize gay people. And that’s my opinion. To boycott and to stay away from the problem—and I’ve heard things as crazy as, “Move the Olympics to Vancouver!” or “Have a dual Olympic: anyone, any country that is for the Russian Olympics, they can go there, and we’ll have another Olympics for all the countries that support gay people!”—and America stands on this soapbox as though they completely support the gays—which soon enough they all will, but—we don’t. EO: That was Johnny Weir, and we’ll hear more from him after eight o’clock. Matthew Syed and Jacquelin Magnay: listening to that, Matthew, what do you make of what Johnny says? I mean he speaks very eloquently, doesn’t he, and the way he refutes the idea of a boycott—you cannot fail to sympathize with his views of the sacrifices that he and his family made to get him to this position. Those surely shouldn’t be compromised. MS: It was a brilliant interview, and that part of it, I thought, was the most compelling of all. It is so lazy and fatuous, particularly for people outside sport, to say that athletes uniquely should make the sacrifice, throw up all of the ambitions that they’ve had for many years, the sacrifices that he so eloquently described that his mother and father have made to get him into a position to compete. I wouldn’t mind if these people outside sport were prepared to make a sacrifice themselves, if Stephen Fry was to say, “I’m going to return every single penny I’ve ever made from the sale of DVDs or videos or whatever else in Russia,” but it’s not industry that’s ever made to make the sacrifice. It’s not economics. It’s always—or often—the sports people. And I just think that that’s grossly unfair, unless it is part of a wider, more sophisticated political strategy. But it rarely is. [At about 39:42] EO: Let’s talk a bit more about Johnny Weir. As you mentioned, Matthew, he’s the American figure skater, former American champion, he’s been to two Winter Olympics already. As he says himself, he’s as out and as proud as it’s possible to be, and the big question for him is: will he go to Sochi? JW: I will be in Sochi. In what capacity, I’m unsure of, but I WILL be there. And my goal is to be at every Olympics for the rest of my life. There’s nothing like an Olympic Games to unite the world, even in a bigger way than the World Cup does. It’s every four years, it’s special, it’s unique, it is so many sports, so many countries, and the Olympic movement is something that I’ve lived and breathed and believed in since I was a young person, the idea of celebrating the youth of the world, and their technical expertise, and their differences. And watching Israel, the Israeli team, walk in the opening ceremonies of a German Olympics, or watching North Koreans and South Koreans walk in the same opening—there’s something so beautiful about that. EO: But the fact that you are there, as you say, as an openly gay man, with the laws that are now in place in Russia: how do you think it’s going to be for you, being there? JW: Russia is a place that I’ve been obsessed with since I was very young. To say I’m a Russophile is kind of an understatement. I speak the language ... [and] I’ve worked almost exclusively with Russians in creating my career and helping me get to where I need to be, whether it was my on-ice coach, my choreographer, my dietitian, my masseuse, my dentist. I am assimilated into the Russian community in America, and in Russia itself. And when I go, I go to Russia as a celebrated person. I go as a great athlete. I am treated very well when I go to Russia. I’ve never had an instance where I had a homophobic comment thrown at me, I’ve never been ostracized, I’ve never been treated badly in Russia. But I don’t go to Russia as a normal person. I go to Russia as a great athlete. Me being gay, there is a slight difference to me going to Russia versus Brad Pitt—who’s also celebrated in Russia—going there for a movie premiere. There is some... awkwardness when it comes to the gay question. But if I was going to Russia as a normal person, this is a time when I would have to rethink that. This is a time when I would be afraid. This is a time when I wouldn’t want to have my sexuality publicized ... or to do anything inappropriate, because when you do travel to other countries, you obey their laws. And the laws against gay people at the moment in Russia are terrible. It’s absolutely a terrible time for gay people in Russia. But, as a normal person or as me, I would still go. Not just because of my love for the country, the culture, the language, everything—I would go to Russia to lend my voice. EO: Do you think that by the Olympics being there, by you being there, it will help to change attitudes in Russia? JW: My hope is that my presence in Russia—as a competitor or not—and showing that a law can’t keep me from doing something that I want to do and living a life of integrity and a life that I’m proud of—I hope that that is helpful in some way. But I refuse to do it at the Olympics where I am an athlete. I would be at the Olympics as an athlete, representing my country. Sometimes being an athlete and dedicating your life to something means a lot more than just the things you were born with. EO: That’s Johnny Weir, and we’ll hear a bit more from him before the end of the program. [At about 1:14] EO: Well, before we go, it seems fitting to give the final word to Johnny Weir. He told me that he would love to meet President Putin. JW: What I would say to him is that I have a very happy life. I live a normal life—I mean, aside from wearing sequined jackets, I live a normal-ish life. I’m strong. I’ve beaten your sportsmen. I’ve done everything that you can do. So why am I not equal to you? What is so terrifying about me and my people that you want to deny us rights and liberty and the ability to live freely? Bonus pics!! Johnny shows off his Russian-flag-inspired manicure at the Russian fan meeting, December 2011. Photo © Tatiana Edrenkina. So today we continue—for no reason at all other than that I love these pics and this interview and I want everybody to read it—our translation of Johnny's interview with Sport Express with parts 3 and 4, translated by the lovely Tatiana Edrenkina and graced with some random new picspam from the Russian fan meeting last December, also by Tati, because she's awesome, and also because yay Russia. But first, the news briefs of the day: (1) Go see Johnny skate in his home rink! Tickets are on sale now for Show of Champions, presented by the Ice House in Hackensack, NJ, on Saturday, August 18! Tickets are $25 for general admission, or $50 for on-ice seating plus the post-show meet-n-greet with the skaters. To purchase, please call the Ice House at 201-487-8444, ext 232. Fireworks also is offering just fifteen Platinum VIP tickets at $175 each that include a coaching seminar, lunch, admission to the pre-show practice, on-ice seating, and the post-show meet-n-greet. Please note that Johnny will not be at the seminar, but is expected at the practice, according to the Ice House. IDK if these are sold out yet, but for more info, please send an email to [email protected]. (2) Post a message of support for Johnny! "Leave a Message for Johnny" is a new feature now available on Johnny's Comeback Gift Fund website. From the site: Many fans who have already sent a gift mentioned that they’d love to have included a message of support with their gift. You’re welcome to do so in the “Message” area of the PayPal screen. But now you also can leave a message here on the site! Our hope is to build a wall of support for Johnny that he can visit anytime, if he’d like, to read and enjoy. Though he can’t offer messages in return (he’s a bit busy…), fans can share their encouraging thoughts and best wishes for him here. Please check it out, and post your message today! (3) Get ready for Husbands the Series Season 2! Love this web series created and produced by Brad Bell ("Cheeks") and Jane Espenson, and I was thrilled to see that Husbands fans fully funded the Kickstarter project to create a second season. I was even more thrilled at the news that came out of San Diego Comic Con this weekend: Among other amazing guest stars, Joss Whedon himself--yes, he of mega Buffy fame, who is now enjoying his most recent huge success as the director of the blockbuster film The Avengers--will be making an appearance in Season 2! This announcement was the number-one story in The Hollywood Reporter on Sunday, which gives you a tiny glimpse of the incredible drawing power Whedon wields. Catch up on Season 1 now, and don't miss the Season 2 premiere on Wednesday, August 15! Photo © Tatiana Edrenkina. Johnny Weir: “At Heart, I’m an Old Russian Woman" Interview in Sport Express posted 06-06-2012 by Slava Malamud translated by Tatiana Edrenkina (Parts 1 and 2 available here.) Part 3: Babushka Tarasova So what will you be like on the ice? Will we see the same Johnny Weir, or a new one? I hope that you will see a wiser Johnny Weir. When you’re young, you make a lot of different mistakes — no one can escape it. I was terribly bitchy, didn’t listen to anyone but myself. When you’re like this, you draw into yourself, and, on bad days, when nothing works out well, nobody is there to help you. I don’t need to be like that anymore. All that I could do for US Figure Skating, I’ve already done. If I don’t succeed now, I will gracefully leave the sport and I will be happy. So the new Johnny Weir is more peaceful and relaxed. I hope that will help me be a stronger skater than I used to be. Will it really help? What if your will to win disappears? I have never been so energized to fight. I’m not as much of a fighter as Plushenko, who fights like a dog to win every competition. Maybe because he’s Russian and I’m American, and we Americans don’t have to suffer and fight for everything like you do. Or maybe it’s just me. I’m not one who’s ready to cut my rival’s throat to win. You love hockey in Russia, so maybe you get your mentality from that. To score a goal, to help your team… I can’t ignore the fact that figure skating is a sport where your destiny is decided by fourteen absolute strangers who are much older than you. George Foreman once told me that Russian boxers are more hungry and angry than Americans. The Russian system of figure skating, as well, is much more serious. In particular, it’s related to the coaches of the old Soviet school. You either succeed, or you’re nothing. Were you shocked when you first encountered this school? I’m sure Tatiana Tarasova did not coddle you. That was exactly what I needed. You see, my first coach, Priscilla Hill, taught me everything I know. But she was a very loving and gentle person, sometimes too much so. And Tarasova kicked my ass. But outside of the rink she was just a babushka [grandmother]: she tried to feed me, comb my hair. Galina Zmievskaya is the same: on the ice, she’s the toughest and most difficult person on earth; but in our regular life, we have a wonderfully warm relationship. What is the characteristic feature of the Russian school of figure skating, from your point of view? What does it mean — “to skate like the Russians”? I can explain that because, more than all the others, I have always thoroughly studied the Russian school. Even when I was a child, [I studied it] on TV. The characteristic feature is that for Russians, everything is very dramatic. Americans are more conservative in their movements. Russians have drama everywhere — costumes, music, technique. Like in hockey, Russians love speed. Movements of the arms and legs are very wide, with a big range. Americans are more restrained. You used to give names to the elements of your costumes… Don’t worry about that! I’m still as strange as before. If I feel the need to give a name to a program or a costume, I will. Why not have fun? The worst thing you can do is treat something too seriously. What is the sense in doing something that doesn’t please you? Actually, it seems that all your weirdnesses are worked out in advance… Worked out in advance? No. I’m really a very strange person, and I’m OK with that. Others are not OK with it. Figure skating is an old kind of sport. Well, not old; let me say, elderly. Traditions rule, and rather elderly people run everything. And by the way, they are not really interested in gay athletes. Although in America, figure skating has the reputation of being a rather gay sport. But it’s kept secret so no one will be upset. But l decided long ago that there’s nothing more important in life than the right to be who you are. So it happened that on the one hand, I didn’t feel the need to comply with the norm. But on the other hand, I know without a doubt that all my competitive results suffered greatly because of that. Part 4: Shower for Me, Platinum for Plushenko If you had been judged without bias, what do you think your place would have been at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver? Ugh… You know how much time passed until I found the strength to watch the performances of all the others? After Vancouver, my heart was broken. I was depressed and lost all interest in figure skating. Vancouver was a peak. Yes, exactly, it was the peak moment of my life. The most emotional, the most dramatic, the most beautiful. I went off the ice feeling incredibly high. But when the scores appeared, I immediately understood that I was being put in sixth place. I thought, “Oh wow, how did the others perform?” And when I went backstage, reporters started coming up to me and announcing: this one fell down, that one stopped in the middle of the program and shit on the ice, and the third one looked like he was on fire, with sparks coming out of his nose. Why didn’t I finish higher then?... So I watched all the performances only after seven or eight months, after I had calmed down a bit. I think I should have been third in Vancouver. Looks like you passed through the disappointment more easily than Plushenko did. You bet. How did you take his reaction, that he deserved a platinum medal and so forth? Figure skating takes all of your life, heart and soul. Plushenko sat out for three years after Torino, and if he returned to this hell, it wasn't for second place, right? If it's the only thing that you think about every day, if you wake up every morning only for this, and it slides out of your grasp... Anyone would be sick at heart. To be honest, I have a much better relationship with Zhenya than I do with Evan Lysacek, and I support him much more. Of course, from the PR point of view, [Zhenya] hurt himself a lot in America. But everyone handles disappointments in their own way. Galina, for example, when I ended up in sixth place, went to eat French fries at McDonald's. To let herself do this, she had to have been very upset. I went to cry in the shower. And Zhenya started talking about a platinum medal. Everyone calms themselves down as best they can... Can you say that your relationship with Evan Lysacek, who became a champion then, is poisonous? I haven’t seen him for a long time. And the poison that we used to have was mostly created by American TV and magazines. And by the skating federation, of course. Of course we didn’t like each other. But when I got married, he was one of the first to congratulate me, which shocked me. I suppose we both grew up. We don’t have to like each other, but now I have more respect for what he achieved. And now you’ve decided to return to figure skating. What do you think: will you have more chances? Have the judges become more liberal? I think they have. I hope so. But if they haven’t, I will not go crazy over the heartbreak. By the way, our national federation is now treating me better than ever before. Perhaps they understand that I can boost the popularity of figure skating in America because of who I am. Evan won the Olympics, but no one remembers who he is. Yes, I can bring popularity back to our sport. I hope the federation will assign me to the events where I need to compete [Note: Johnny has been assigned to two Grand Prix events for the 2012-2013 season: Rostelecom Cup (Cup of Russia) and Trophée Eric Bompard], and will tell me how to skate in order to please the judges and not just the audience. In the last two years, I got used to performing for people who applaud me for shaking my ass for them. So, will you be able to please the judges? It will be difficult with them. It was difficult with them for Zhenya, too, when he came back. And I’m not as popular as Zhenya is in Russia… But there’s nothing to complain about. In general, I’m loved and valued in America. The federation knows it, and sees that they need me. Still to come: Parts 5, 6, and 7! Picspam!! Johnny signing autographs at the fan meeting... Johnny. Exclusive photo © David Ingogly. This series of photos was shot at the Holiday Dreams on Ice 2012 post-show VIP party, held in a small hotel bar near the Long Island rink. Johnny was tired, having had a very long rehearsal the night before that ended sometime after midnight, a full day of dress rehearsals the day of the show, multiple performances in the actual show itself, and after-show photographs at the rink. Then he had to hurry and scrub off all his makeup, change clothes, redo his hair, gather all his things, and arrive to spend hours more at the meet-n-greet. Yet, as always, his beautiful energy when he entered the room was magnetic. Immediately surrounded on all sides, he took time to greet every person, chat with every fan, autograph everything handed to him, offer hugs to all, and to thank every skater who had performed in the show with him. He is a larger-than-life man, a two-time Olympian and LGBT icon with a reputation for outrageousness, whom we most often see on television or in red carpet photos or via the pages of a glossy magazine—but who, in person, is kind, gentle, and dedicated to making sure that even his littlest fans receive his full attention. The room was extremely crowded, resulting in very tight camera angles, and the lighting, as always, was a challenge. Davey hates to use a flash, especially in those conditions, because it's so startling to people to have these bursts of light going off when he's practically on top of them. He prefers to be as unobtrusive as possible, capturing candid moments rather than posed shots from his quiet vantage point. When we started sifting through what we had, the uneven lighting and cacophony of color in the bar felt very distracting, calling attention to itself and muffling the people and their interactions. As black-and-whites, the photos crystallized into their essence: timelessly elegant memories of an evening spent with the extraordinary Johnny Weir. As always, please click any photo twice for larger view. As soon as he enters, a ripple runs through the noisy, overcrowded room, and everyone knows: Johnny's here! Wearing boots with a slight hidden heel, and one of his wonderfully luxurious furs, he cuts a rather imposing figure, as he also does when he's towering over you in his skates. But his graciousness and ready sense of humor immediately puts everyone at ease. With show co-star Emily Hughes. "Last year I brought you things to sign for my friends who couldn't come to the VIP party," I tell him. "This year I just brought you some of my friends. You don't have to sign them. Or you can if you want." Here he is delighted to greet Jenn Kittler. And he's also delighted with her gift of flowers. Chatting with fans. Fan Elizabeth Lara takes their picture with her cell phone. Hugs for his partner in rehearsal crimes, Zach Donohue. Zach, Madison Hubbell, and Johnny. With fan Debora Walsh. An autograph for a young fan. Listening closely. With fan Anastasia Pryanikova. Sitting down to tackle yet more autographs. Johnny. Zach, Johnny, Jason Brown, and Max Aaron Getting ready to leave, with an armload of flowers and gifts. With Johnny. His turn to crack me up. A rare photo of the photographer: Davey with Johnny, taken with my cell phone because I have no clue how Davey's camera works. And one more. Exclusive photos © David Ingogly. Johnny acknowledges the crowd at the end of his Swan Lake performance in this screencap from Stars on Ice: Japan Tour 2013. IMPORTANT REMINDERS: Johnny's fabulous auction is coming to a close! OWN A PIECE OF JOHNNY HISTORY!! Johnny's seven-day auction of skating and fashion memorabilia IS ENDING SOON on Linda's Stuff! A portion of the proceeds will go to the Trevor Project. For a look at Johnny wearing some of the items, please see this blog post. Please keep voting for Johnny on Food Network! UPDATE: Monday's voting was.... super weird. But today the poll seems to be working more like it has been, although Hines Ward's numbers remain curiously high. So please do vote vote vote 10x per day from every available device—PC, phone, laptop, iPad—and let's get Johnny back in first place where he belongs!! Vote totals as of Tuesday, January 15, 11:30 am CST. Johnny has come back from an incomprehensible low of 6% to 9%, while Hines has fallen a few points from yesterday's equally incomprehensible 80%. VOTE!! Yes, at last, we have video from Japan!! The January 6 show in Osaka was broadcast yesterday on TV-Tokyo and miraculously made its way to YouTube in practically no time at all, much to the astonished excitement of fans everywhere. So if you haven't seen his Swan Lake/Black Swan performance yet—or even if you have—please stop everything you're doing and watch it right now. Because it's all the classic Johnny—elegance and passion, grace and athleticism, beautiful lines and flow, as only Johnny can bring to the ice—that so many love best about his skating: If the video won't play for you, please try this link. And then please enjoy these screencaps, which, while not the highest quality, do their best to highlight his gorgeous costume. I love his take on stark black, and the way the white panels flutter as he glides past the camera... Beautiful ending pose. Absolutely love this program. As did everyone else on Twitter. Here are my three favorite responses out of the flood of Twitter love he received: More video!! In a pre-show broadcast, various experts— including Johnny—were asked to offer their podium predictions for the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. Johnny's portion begins at about 4:30. Video link. Screencaps! Tweeted by @midnight_kurage. And the entire Stars on Ice broadcast. Johnny's Swan Lake begins at about 0:14:00. He's also in the finale, at about 1:35:00. Video link. Rachael vs. Guy Recap: "Hollywood Walk of Farm" (Actualfax episode title.) Best line of the night: "We—me and my hair— are excited to be on the farm." OK! Episode 2 picks up with Team Rachael down one member, having lost Gilbert Gottfried at the end of last week's episode. This week Johnny draws on his Pennsylvania roots and everything he learned on his grandmother's farm to try to stay in the competition. UPDATE!! New video! Of just the Johnny parts, which is just the way I like my TV shows. Thank you, minihoarse! The full episode is now available on the Rachael vs. Guy website, and also at this link. (Warning: Spoilers below in the captions!) Team Guy picks its way through the fields to gather with Rachael and Guy and get their instructions for today's challenge. Guy: "Johnny, you stole the thunder last week with the outfit. Again, you come through..." Love his Daisy Dukes and his shirt. Listening to Guy and Rachael explain this week's challenge. Johnny's "Chicken Marbles" are his go-to protein— chicken breasts—wrapped in prosciutto and grilled. Yikes: Guy tells Johnny he's added the feta cheese to his Water Salad too early in the process, and it's looking unappetizing... ...so he has to start over and prepare the salad again. "My salad looks like trash. I need to fix it. If I don't get the salad re-chopped, re-dressed, and re-beautified, I'm not going to have a side dish to show with my chicken." Done! Johnny introduces his dishes to the guest tasters and mentions his pride in his Pennsylvania farm roots. Team Guy awaits their fate in their trailer. Unbeknownst to Johnny, outside at the tasting, Guy has high praise for him: "I think he's got way more talent, way more culinary awareness, than he's given himself credit for." The verdict is in.... ...and Johnny's dishes are well-received! Plus more kudos from Guy: "The fact that you were organized enough that when I came and told you that you're not supposed to mix the feta into the salad because it starts to make it look funky, and how you turned it around—outstanding!" But it's Team Rachael who wins the day. And that means the bottom two finishers on Team Guy— Dean and Cornelia—must face off in the blind-tasting challenge to determine who goes home. Johnny comforts an anxious Chilli as they cheer on their teammates. They applaud both chefs... ...and are saddened by the departure of Cornelia, who lost to Dean in the challenge. Next week: The teams take over Mel's Diner, where they must not only cook the food, but serve it in style—in vintage uniforms, and on roller skates! Brief Johnny-centric promo for next week! Video link. Please keep voting for Johnny as your Celebrity Cook-Off Fan Favorite! He stayed in the lead with 33% for most of the weekend, but after last night's episode and Hines Ward's crowd-pleasing flank steak recipe, Johnny slipped to 31% while Hines briefly gained to 24% (now back at 23%). Show Food Network that they made an excellent choice in drawing viewers by inviting Johnny to participate in the show!! You can vote 10x a day from every computer and mobile device. DO IT DO IT DO IT. UPDATE From Our WTAF Dept.: Since I posted this blog twenty minutes ago, the Fan Fav poll standings have suddenly morphed to this: Awaiting clarification from Food Network.... Although the guess is that the accumulated vote totals have been suddenly randomly zeroed out for the new week, and we're starting over. So PLEASE KEEP VOTING for Johnny!! Bonus pics!! Photo tweeted by Johnny: "With my hero Ira Slutskaya. Snow play." Photo tweeted by Johnny: "Group photo. Phillips, Ira, Mao-chan, Akiko-chan, Kanako-chan, Shizuka-chan, Dai-kun" Yay!! Phil Potempa's daily entertainment news column.
Johnny Weir, NBC’s commentator of the Winter Olympics, is known for his statement-making style off the ice and on. See his looks through the years.
Johnny in the behind-the-scenes-at-the- Glitter-and-Ice-photo-shoot video posted yesterday by M∙A∙C Cosmetics on their YouTube channel. He described this as his "Winter Warrior" look. May I also add: "WOW." IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT!! Holiday Dreams On Ice just announced yesterday that they're offering a special promotion on tickets for this Friday's show in Philadelphia--starring our one and only Winter Warrior--courtesy of Eyefly.com (part of the Bluefly family, whom we all have loved ever since they brought us Johnny's "Closet Confession" last year): Use promo code EYEFLY to get 50% off your general admission tickets here, AND get 15% off new glasses from Eyefly! Don't miss this chance to see Johnny skate live!! It is an amazing and unforgettable experience, and also now an affordable one, thanks to Holiday Dreams On Ice and Eyefly! Hurry before tickets are all sold out!! So anybody else remember this little series of tweets from nearly 11 months ago....? And we were all going, "Wonder what the heck they're doing in London for like 24 hours....? With Nicola Formichetti....?" (Lady Gaga's stylist, for those who may not recognize his name). Well. Now we know. That 13-hour photo shoot is what brought us the MAC ads and posters that we've been dying over the last two months: Of course later, in June, they went to Miami to shoot the MAC campaign video, which is its own level of unparalleled awesomeness, but now for the first time, we're finally getting a peek at what went on during that mysterious London trip. Karen Weeks first alerted me yesterday to the existence of this new video via this charmingly incoherent tweet, which I recognized immediately as the Bat Signal for OMG THERE'S SOMETHING NEW AND AMAZING BY JOHNNY OUT THERE GO FIND IT NOW!! And when I located the video, it had already gotten 306 views in the 8 minutes between the time it was first posted by MAC on their Facebook page and the moment that Karen saw it. As of this writing, it's up to 4,475 in about 15 hours. (Note: Not all of those are me and Karen....) And BTW it's every bit as fabulous as absolutely everything else those MAC people produce. Their marketing team is brilliant. (BRB checking to see if there's any Glitter and Ice left that I can order because I'm suddenly overwhelmed with the desire to sparkle...). So then as word spread yesterday afternoon, first we were all so completely mesmerized that we just... froze. In front of our monitors. Wordlessly hitting "replay." Then, of course, we had to start tweeting and Facebooking additional incoherence, mostly along the lines of "THUD" and "OMGIDIE" and " ♥♥♥ \o/ ♥♥♥." And then it hit our collective consciousness all at once: SCREENCAPS. So there's a nice set here from @dapperderp, and also another great series posted by Gary Podschun on the fan page, all of which are amazing and, like crack, just made us want more. So here you go. Please click any photo twice for full-size view. Cuz these are pleasingly large. Video link is at the end of the post. Merry Weirmas / happy holidays / happy everything! Looking forward to seeing everyone in Philly! Modeling a "crown of icicles" for Nicola Formichetti... ...who approves. Looking over at Tara with a wry smile.... ...as she displays his specially decorated skates. And the Winter Warrior is ready to do battle with the camera. "...there are going to be two gorgeous models who underweigh me by about 300 pounds, and 'over-tall' me by at least three feet." "But I am going to try to outshine them." (Models? What models...?) See the video here!! Amazing, as is everything MAC does. In the words of @JohnnysMonster: "God bless you, MAC Cosmetics." Just THREE DAYS until Holiday Dreams On Ice!! NEW!! Use promo code "EYEFLY" for 50% off your general admission ticket PLUS 15% off new glasses from Eyefly.com!! "Chanelf" art created by Lizzy Pine. It's not too late to participate in Show Johnny Weir the Love's holiday gift project! We have a sparkly surprise planned for Johnny (but no spoilers here!), and just $5 gets your name on the card that will accompany the gift. The deadline has been extended to allow more people to be a part of the project, so if you'd like to join in, please visit the SJWTL Facebook page for details! New from Ice Theatre of New York: "Order your copy of the 2011 Benefit Gala DVD, including performances by Ice Theatre of New York and honoree, Johnny Weir. Also for sale, the 2011 Benefit Gala and Benefit Journal, signed by Johnny Weir. Limited copies available. Get yours now!" Johnny's Glitter and Ice collection with MAC is selling out fast! Don't miss your chance to sparkle-- visit a MAC retailer or order online ASAP! New Q and A! Go read it now! Yes! Johnny's dresses are now available for purchase only on eDressMe.com! At last: Pop Star On Ice is now available on DVD! Order yours today from the Pop Star On Ice website! Johnny tweeted: "Buy my single,'Dirty Love' via iTunes. Tell all your friends to as well. The more copies sold takes me one step closer to making a video! №1!" THE WORLD NEEDS THIS VIDEO IN THE SAME WAY THAT IT NEEDS AIR. You know what to do. Please buy the song from Johnny's website, or just click the "Buy" button on the player at the top of the blog! Hey, Welcome to My World also is available as an eBook! More info on Johnny's website! Bonus video via The Advocate, from their post titled: "Possibly the Most Beautiful Ad for Marriage Equality We've Seen." The video was produced by an equality group in Australia, where nearly two-thirds of voters favor legalizing gay marriage, according to The Advocate, but prime minister Julia Gillard remains firmly opposed. I agree with The Advocate: This is one of the most eloquent illustrations I've seen of this simple concept: Love is love. copyright 2011 / Binky and the Misfit Mimes / Lynn V.
