He has worked for years as a radiation physicist specializing in low-energy x-rays, never considering the act recreational until a friend asked him to take an x-ray of one of his paintings. Impressed with the result, van't Riet was inspired to explore just what else he could examine. He turned to nature, capturing what he calls 'bioramas,' unveiling flora and fauna in all their see-through intrigue. Shooting analog with silver bromide x-ray film—which resembles a black and white negative—van't Riet digitizes, inverts, and then selectively colorizes parts of the image in Photoshop, giving us a taste of a superpower we've all imagined.
