Areal pictures of Lake Powell taken from small Plane. Lake Powell is a reservoir on the Colorado River, straddling the border between Utah and Arizona (most of it, along with Rainbow Bridge, is in Utah). It is the second largest man-made reservoir in the United States behind Lake Mead, storing 24,322,000 acre feet (30 km³) of water when full. Lake Powell was created by the flooding of Glen Canyon by the controversial Glen Canyon Dam, which also led to the creation of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, a popular summer destination. The reservoir is named for explorer John Wesley Powell, a one-armed American Civil War veteran who explored the river via three wooden boats in 1869. In 1972, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area was established. It is public land managed by the National Park Service, and available to the public for recreational purposes. It lies in parts of Garfield, Kane, and San Juan counties in southern Utah, and Coconino County in northern Arizona. Lake Powell is a storage facility for the Upper Basin states of the Colorado River Compact (Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and New Mexico). The Compact specifies that the Upper Basin states are to provide a minimum annual flow of 8.23 million acre feet (10 km³) to the Lower Basin states (Arizona, Nevada, and California).

The severity of the drought in California and across the West has already reached record levels in many places. Lake Powell, a reservoir on the Utah-Arizona border, is currently at 45 percent of capacity and is at risk of reaching the lowest level on record by September.
In a surprising move, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation is releasing much more water from Lake Powell in an effort to shore up Lake Mead’s water level. But how much it will help and how long this will last is not known at this time.

Ack! I know! I haven't blogged in FOREVAH! Please don't start throwing tomatoes at me yet, . . . I'm here to explain to you where I have been and reward you with a GIVEAWAY for being so patient with my non-blogginess. :) First of all, I went on a vacation to Lake Powell, where we stayed in a houseboat with my side of the familyfor a week. It was beautiful and inspiring . . . and completely "off the grid". I didn't have access to the internet for a week. It was nice to getaway, but I have to admit . . . I missed my computer! Ha! My very favorite thing to do in Lake Powell (besides building sandcastles with my kids), is to explore all of the amazing canyons on a waverunner. It's truly a magical place! While I was on that vacation, I had the worst toothache I have ever had in my life! I couldn't sleep. I couldn't function. It was terrible. Jaw aching . . . headaches, tooth sensitivity, etc. When I got home I went to the dentist. We had to wait several days to rule out bruising, but come Monday morning I had a root canal. UGH! Not happy about it, but I tell ya! I am soooooooooooooooo grateful to have that tooth fixed. I'm still a little sore, but it's NOTHING compared to the pain I was experiencing before. On top of that, I started a new "job" (I'll tell you more about it next week) and a new calling in my church. I now work with the Young Women in my ward. Jensyn is in my class and I'm excited to have the extra time to hang out with her. :) *********************************** Okay, so now that I've explained to you where I have been . . . I want to reward you for being patient with me and coming back for a visit! :D You all know that I am a MAJOR FAN of the kits at NoelMignon.com . Her latest kit, "Sweet Sue" is GORGEOUS!!!!! One of my favorites I've played with in a long time! And I want to give one away to one lucky reader! Woot! Woot! Click here to see what is included in this kit! You will have until midnight Mountain Standard Time on Tuesday, September 28th to leave a comment on this post. In your comment, please tell me what you like most about reading blogs . . . is it the projects, the tips, the giveaways? Let me know! I will announce the winner on Wednesday, September 29th. Happy First Day of Fall! (my favorite season!) Jana
Arizona is a pretty awesome state for nature lovers and scenery addicts, and perhaps one of the most beautiful places to bask in Arizona’s awesomeness is Lake Powell in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area. Our friend Mike Shubic over at Mike’s Road Trip gives us this great guide to Page/Lake Powell as part of his Top 25 Arizona Road Trip List. Here’s what Mike has to say... "Lake Powell is encompassed within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and is at the mouth of the Grand Canyon. The lake is extremely scenic with tall canyons, red rock formations and sand dunes—it’s a wonderful place for recreation such as house-boating, water skiing, kayaking, fishing, hiking, camping, exploration and so much more. Here is an interesting fact…the stunning body of water known as Lake Powell has more coastline than the entire west coast…with finger inlets of turquoise blue water stretching for miles. Here are five things you can’t miss when visiting Lake Powell. Antelope Canyon - You’ve probably seen the amazing pictures of Antelope Canyon before, but probably didn’t know where it was located. This is a fantastic experience and a must when visiting Page / Lake Powell. Tour the lake – You can rent a boat, or, hop aboard a tour boat for the Antelope Canyon Cruise, which will provide you with a quick introduction to the lake. Wesley Powell Museum – Learn about the canyon before, and, after the dam was built. John Wesley Powell was the first person to traverse the mighty Colorado River."
