However, a three-month trip to Italy with an aunt in 1880 confirmed his determination to become an artist. (And this despite the fact that he contracted severe typhoid during the trip which left him with partial deafness.) He attended the Laird School of Art, Birkenhead (1880-82), and then went to London to study at St John’s Wood School of Art (1882-84) and the Royal Academy Schools (1884-88). While at the latter, he won the 1888 Armitage Prize for a figurative design in monochrome.
Leslie Brooke was one of the most popular illustrators of his time. His picture books were in high demand and the character of Johnny Crow was a major hit among children and their parents.
