The best wood for woodblock printing depends on two things: your budget and your location. Here's what you need to know about woodcut blocks!
Periwinkle capped mushrooms clustered in the woods. This original wood block print was inspired by the delight of discovering hundreds of mushrooms popping up in the woods during a rainy summer and fall. This is #6 in a series of prints that I call "The Year of the Mushroom." I use oil based inks and lightweight, acid free printmaking papers. Due to the nature of hand block-printing, there are variations between each print. Each signed original ships in a sturdy mailer. A lovely gift for a mycologist, naturalist, mushroom forager or anyone who enjoys the small wonders in life. Image dimensions: 4"x6" Paper: 8"x10"

Each handmade print is unique and there are natural variations in how the ink looks on each piece. Inspired by the dunes of California this piece uses sharp contrast to lay out a sunrise scene on a solitary dune.

Sun Quilt is a linocut inspired by folk quilts and flower gardens. The tiled motif depicts a smiling sun ringed by flowers. "In the Shallows" Original Limited Edition Woodcut Signed and numbered in pencil by the artist In pristine/never framed condition (sold unmatted/unframed) Designed, cut and hand-printed by the artistIn the Shallows Woodcut 6" x 4" Edition 200 Block: Cherry Ink: Black Paper: Daphne, hand-made in Nepal, heavily deckled Process: Standard woodcut Image: Many of these swirl woodcuts are inspired by the wood grain. I pick up a block of wood and I can almost place the figure to match the wood grain. These smaller images are my way of sketching which I consider an exercise for bigger and better woodcuts. I can't seem to sketch on a notebook, the task seems like a waste of time. I draw on a solid cherry block, from models or model books, and cut the block while day dreaming my next big piece. Process: Woodcuts and wood engravings are made by drawing an image on a block of wood, usually cherry in my case, then carving out the negative spaces. After carving, what is left is a big "stamp" of the desired image. I roll ink with a roller over the woodcut, place a piece of handmade paper on the inked block, apply pressure and transfer the image on the paper. All my woodcuts are made in limited editions, signed and numbered in pencil. Having spent an obscene amount of time surfing Pinterest (severe time waster alert!) I have become increasingly enchanted by the wonderful lino prints being produced by some very clever peeps. Well being unable to resist having a go I purchased some sheets of lino the other day and dug out some old cutting tools that I'd had from college days.... it's funny sometimes I seem to have tools for things I don't even remember doing...... unfortunately this stems from the collector-holic nature of this beast.... I just love tools and gadgets of all kinds. Anyway I digress, I sketched out the design below. I thought it best to start simply and transferred this onto the lino. After much mess and cutting I ended up with the lino cut I've called Fur, Fin & Feather. I feel quite proud that I took note of all the warnings to cut away from myself and didn't spill a drop of blood once! A miracle! Below is one of the first proofs I pulled from the lino.... as the keen eyed among you might notice the lino cut is different from the print as I've done a bit of tidying up. I'm quite keen to add some background colour to the final prints so I might have a go a making a collograph plate to get some extra texture in there too. We shall see! Hopefully if the collograph idea comes together I'll update this with some images of the final prints. If they are nice I might stick them in my Etsy shop! Ta ta for now. x x Jen
8x10 print on wood Jigsaw Linocut Printmaking has been artist Leslie Nan Moon's passion since she took an elective class as an undergraduate. Her art is narrative in style and whether real or reimagined, it’s very Pacific Northwest. In her most recent work she is primarily using the technique known as “jigsaw puzzle linocuts”. In this method she begins by drawing and then carving her design into a piece of linoleum. After she has finished carving she cuts up the block and then applies different colors of ink to each piece individually. Next she puts the block back together (like a puzzle) before laying the paper down on the block and pulling a print. Ink must be reapplied by hand to the linoleum for each original print she creates. Leslie Nan Moon Losing myself in my art in a healthy way is one of my greatest strengths. I’ve always loved to make art but over the last few years I truly NEED to make art. It saves my soul. I am the mom to a 21 year old son with severe Autism and Intermittent Explosive Disorder among other things. Due to the lack of services for people like my son he is with me almost 24/7. We do a lot of driving around, visiting landmarks, parks and looking at wildlife.
Title: Black Bird - Skinny Legs This is an original lino block print done in black ink. I love birds, especially blackbirds - they are so elegant and their songs fill the air with beautiful sound. A suivre... A view of one of my favorite trails. This little swamp boardwalk looks different with every season. 8 in x 10 in This is a hand-printed block print from an original design. It is printed with black ink on Strathmore, acid free, white paper. Because these are hand-printed, there will be slight differences with every print. That may mean small differences in ink distribution or thickness, or exact position of the print. I promise that I will not send you anything that I am not completely happy with if I were to buy it myself.
