The 15" gauge railway at Dreamland Margate opened in June 1920 and was designed by famed miniature railway engineer Henry Greenly. It originally formed a loop around the edge of the park but due to redevelopment it was cut back to a shorter out-and-back run in 1924. The first loco on the line was No.15 'Prince Edward of Wales', originally built by Bassett Lowke in 1909 for the Imperial International Exhibition held in White City that same year. After a spell at Rhyl it arrived at Margate in 1920. It was previously named 'Red Dragon'. The second steam loco, which was larger and more powerful, arrived in 1924 from Albert Barnes of Rhyl, this was another 4-4-2 which was named 'Billie'. In 1959 a petrol loco was acquired secondhand from a private railway in Haywards Heath, having been built by Morse back in the 1930s. 'Prince Edward of Wales' was last used in the early 1960s and ended up stored out of use. It was sold to a couple of enthusiasts in 1968 who cannibalised it for parts to help rebuild another loco. The railway closed at the end of 1979. Billie operated at Dudley Zoo for a couple of years in the early 1980s and is now in private storage, out of use. The petrol loco still survives in private ownership in Hampshire. The few remaining bits of 'Prince Edward of Wales' were used in the construction of a new replica loco in 1991 which is now based on the Rhyl Miniature Railway. One of the old concrete footbridges over the railway, the one adjacent to the main station, was still standing during the early 1990s.
