Aerial view of Lahaina, Maui, with sail boats, cruise ship in the Pacific Ocean, and the island of Lanai in the background. Lahaina is "the" tourist town of Maui. It is an old whaling seaport, which now receives hundreds of cruise ships every year. The passengers unload offshore (because Lahiana does not have a deep harbor), and they come ashore to visit the many shops and to go whale watching in the many tour boat services that are available. Whale Watching: Maui, Hawaii is one of the best places to watch humpback whales anywhere in the world. Both Lahaina and Ma'alaea Harbors offer excellent whalewatching. Each year, humpback whales migrate from cool waters near Alaska to their warm-water breeding grounds in Hawaii. The first whale sightings of the year typically take place in late September or October. The whales don't arrive all at once. Their numbers gradually increase as winter approaches. The peak of whalewatch season is typically in February and March. The season ends by about mid-May. Dry Climate: Because Lahaina is on the "leeward" side of the island, it receives only about 15-20 inches of rainfall a year (compared to the West Mountains which can receive between 200-400 inches), and has mostly sunny, warm days throughout the year -- which is another reason it is so popular with tourists. Those lush green fields you see (this was January) are because of irrigation.
