It was difficult for Maya to think of what kind of party she wanted this year, since the Harry Potter Party last year was such a success. About two weeks prior, she thought perhaps a Percy Jackson party might be fun. This summer she devoured the Percy Jackson and the Olympian books by Rick Riordan, reading one each day and finishing the series within a week. I wasn't so sure -- I've read the books (and loved them), but didn't quite think that I could adapt the theme into much of a girls only party. But, I did my best and this is the result... THE INVITATION Percy is dyslexic, so it was fun to mix greek letters into the invitation to make it a bit harder to read. I then taped the papers onto dowels and hot glued some wooden knobs that I painted gold. Then I rolled them up into scrolls and sealed them with wax. Maya stamped the seal into them. I used black heat transfer and my Silhouette Portrait to cut and make the shirt. We delivered the invitation scrolls along with a Camp Half-Blood t-shirt for the girls to wear to the party. This was good because there was painting involved at the party. THE DECORATIONS Percy Jackson likes to eat blue food. His mom works in a candy shop and brings him blue candy. So that is why all the blue. Percy likes Blue Cherry Coke, but I opted for blue gatorade and was glad I did, because it was HOT outside. I found these mini Coca-Cola glasses and they were perfect. The book also talks about him loving blue jelly beans, blue taffy, and blue sour strings. Ambrosia was butterscotch pudding. The book says it tasted like popcorn pudding, but this worked! I got this horn from Target. I added a label to make it look like Percy donated it to Camp Half-Blood. I put some golden drachmas (chocolate coins) by the iris message (water). THE GAMES I posted a camp schedule and followed it pretty closely to keep the party on track. I also drew a map of Camp Half-Blood. Upon arrival the kids got divided into cabins. I had three cabins with three girls each (Athena, Artemis, and Aphrodite). Ethen was the only boy and in cabin Poseidon by himself. I made banners for each cabin and hung them on the back fence. They were made from foam sheets I got at Michaels. I cut symbols out of vinyl and when I put them on the fence, the heat of the sun melted the vinyl. I quickly took them down (it took only minutes before they were warped) and put some clear tape over them and that did the trick. I was dressed as Hera (GODDESS OF MARRIAGE, MOTHERS & FAMILY) Distinguishing Features: Usually prefers classic Greek dresses and a simple crown, though she can blend in as needed. She usually appears as a beautiful older woman, and enjoys turning into birds when she needs to hide or spy. She hangs out where family life is strongest: the car pool line at school, weekend soccer games, and birthday parties. As the goddess of family, Hera will be happy to pack your lunch or comb your hair or give you a ride to school, but don’t talk back to her. When Hera is mad, she doesn’t just ground you. She’s likely to smash you into the ground. I put descriptions like this of the Greek gods into a little booklet. I made golden drachmas that had the name of the cabin they were sorted into. They drew the coin out of a golden seashell. ARTS & CRAFTS (Forging a shield with Hephastus) They painted cake rounds. Most chose to decorate like their cabins. ARCHERY (with Apollo) Dave took 3 girls at a time and taught them to shoot arrows. They loved this part! I love this shot of Maya. The look on her face. Pink arrow flying free. FREEZE TAG (with Medusa) I picked up this mask at Target. LUNCH IN THE MESS HALL: I served fruit and veggie platters and the food of the gods: barbeque (pulled pork sandwiches). SWORD AND SHIELD TECHNIQUE (with Clarisse) I bought this crazy pinata and modified it into a minotaur with white underwear. I laughed at how funny it turned out but the kids LOVED it. They battled it with Riptide. I made a pen and sword with Anaklysmos written on it in gold foil. They really got into this. Maya hacked off a horn and I thought it was fitting. I didn't fill it with candy. But they didn't care. They ripped it to shreds. Somehow my camera got switched to the wrong setting in all the mayhem. I am bummed, because this part was hilarious as they all tackled the poor thing to the ground. They each took a piece as a spoil of war. THE CAKE: They came inside for some healing nectar and some cake. I put Zeus' lightning bolt into a blue cake topped with white cloud whipped cream. It was yummy. CLOSING CEREMONY: I donned each girl with a golden laurel (a gold headband I got at Forever21) and they each got a camp bead symbolizing their first year at Camp Half-Blood with a Poseidon symbol on it. CHARIOT RACES: They raced Razor Rip Riders until their parents came to pick them up. A place to leave their burnt offerings.
I made this mini Belle (from Beauty and the Beast) cake and the bottom lemon cake to celebrate my daughter's 2nd birthday (Wow! That happened in the blink of an eye!!). I was pretty disappointed with how Belle looked though. Unfortunately, I didn't have the right piping tip for the skirt and had to make do with what I had. The bottom cake gave me some trouble too. I was rushing to get it done and made the mistake of trying to assemble the layers before the cakes had fully cooled. When I went to stack and ice the top layer, raspberry filling started oozing out everywhere! Luckily, I was able to salvage the cake with some creative icing but it also ended up a little lopsided in the process...oh well, lesson learned. These were actually two completely separate cakes and I am listing the directions and recipe for each below. The Belle cake was just made from a boxed yellow cake baked in a sheet pan. The bottom cake was a homemade, Martha Stewart lemon cake with raspberry filling. Both of the cakes were iced with a traditional buttercream frosting. Even though, I wasn't crazy how this cake looked it still got plenty of "oohs" and "ahhs" from the birthday girl. She recently discovered Disney princesses and loves Belle, "Ella", "Snow Y" and "A-L". Belle cake For directions on how to make this cake, please click HERE. Lemon cake with raspberry filling Lemon Cake 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature, plus more for pans 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled), plus more for pans 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon lemon zest 1 1/2 cups sugar 2 large eggs plus 3 large egg yolks 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 cup low-fat buttermilk Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour two 8-by-2-inch cake pans, tapping out excess flour. In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and lemon zest. In a large bowl, using an electric mixer, beat butter and 1 1/2 cups sugar until light and fluffy. With mixer on low, beat in eggs and yolks, one at a time. Beat in 2 tablespoons lemon juice. Alternately beat in flour mixture and buttermilk beginning and ending with flour mixture; mix just until combined. Divide batter between pans; smooth tops. Bake until cakes pull away from sides of pans, 32 to 35 minutes. Let cool in pans 10 minutes. Run a knife around edges of pans and invert cakes onto a wire rack. Let cool completely. Source: Martha Stweart Raspberry Filling Makes: about 2 cups of filling. 1 pkg (16 ounces) frozen raspberries packed in sugar thawed 1/3 cup granulated sugar 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 teaspoon lemon juice Drain raspberries, reserving liquid. Add enough water to liquid to equal 1 1/4 cups. In large saucepan, combine liquid, sugar, cornstarch and lemon juice; mix well. Heat and stir until mixture boils and thickens. Cool completely. Stir thawed raspberries into cooled mixture. Fill cake. Source: Wilton's My little girl and the "real" Belle.
Here comes the summer birthdays oh my....do you need tags I sure do, I am always looking for some fun ones to use on my birthday packages, though I think with this sweet Bonjour Stamp Set you will be able to use it on many, many fun and different creative projects. I started my tag by first taking a tag die and running it through my Craftwell eBosser along with a pretty piece of printed paper. I stamped the border stamp that comes in the Bonjour Stamp set along the edges in black ink. Stamping and coloring my treats I had stamped from the Bonjour Stamp Set with Copic Markers I cut them out with the matching Bojour Elle-ments Die Cut with my eBosser, placed them on my tag, adding one with pop dots. I used a "Have a Sweet Birthday" sentiment from the set with Black Memento Ink and added a fun bow to the top of the tag. I hope you check out Avery Elle Stamps and Craftwell eBosser as well as check out both of the blogs for some fabulous inspiration. A cotton candy cake recipe decorated to look like Hatchimals! Makes one 9-inch tall Hatchimals cake Things you'll need Ingredients 3 cups cake flour 1 tablespoon baking powder ½ teaspoon salt 2 cups butter, room temperature 2 cups sugar 2 teaspoon cotton candy flavor 1 cup milk ¼ teaspoon pink gel color 5 large egg whites Equipment Large mixing bowl Medium mixing bowl Hand mixer Whisk Rubber spatula Egg silicone mold 6-inch cake pan Cake turntable Small offset spatula Small knife White buttercream frosting Pink frosting in a decorating bag fitted with a #12 tip Fondant: grey, light blue, light purple, white, and black Food coloring gel: pink, blue, and white Large fondant rolling pin Small fondant rolling pin Fondant veining tool 1 ⅛ inch round cookie cutter #12 decorating tip Edible disco dust Decoration White buttercream frosting Grey fondant (shell) Light purple fondant (horn) Purple fondant (eyes) Light blue fondant (beak) White fondant (whites of eyes) Black fondant (center of eyes) Pink gel color (speckle) Blue gel color (speckle) White gel color (speckle to mix with colors) Pink buttercream frosting (head) Edible Disco dust (shell) Let's get started! Preheat oven to 325ºF. Grease egg mold and grease and line 6-inch cake pan. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cake flour, baking powder and salt and set aside. In a large bowl, beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. On low speed, alternate adding the flour mixture and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. In a large clean bowl, beat the egg whites to a soft peak. Fold the egg whites into the batter, 1/3 at a time until all the egg whites are added. Pour the batter into the prepared egg mold and the remaining batter into a 6 inch pan. Bake egg halves for 1 hour and 35 minutes. Bake the 6-inch cake for 30 minutes. Remove cake from the oven and cool to room temperature. Time to decorate! Trim each egg half so the halves fit together. Pipe some white frosting in between each half and place together to make a round egg. Freeze for 15 minutes. Remove the bottom 1/6 of the cake to make a flat surface for the egg to sit upright. Cut the top of the cake to resemble a cracked egg. Remove a small amount of the cake from inside to create a place for the head to sit. Save all cake pieces. Crumb coat the cake and chill in the refrigerator for an additional 30 minutes. To make the egg shell: On a lightly powdered sugar surface, roll out grey fondant to a ¼-inch thick. Cut fondant into a large rectangle and wrap then smooth around cake. To speckle the egg shell: Mix in white food coloring into separate bowls of the pink and blue food coloring. Using a dry brush, splatter the pink and blue paint onto the grey fondant egg. To make the Hatchimal head: crumble the 6-inch cake and reserved cake pieces into a bowl and mix in 1 tablespoon of frosting. Work the frosting into the cake then shape into a large smooth cake ball. Place the cake ball onto the top opening of the egg shell. Shape a small unicorn horn with light purple fondant and a small beak with light blue fondant. To make the eyes: Use a small round cutter to make purple fondant irises. Use the smaller round cutter to make black pupils. Attach the eyes, horn and beak to the head. Pipe the entire head with pink frosting to look like fur. Brush the shell of the cake with edible disco dust to make it sparkle. TaDa! Our Hatchimals’ purple eyes means it’s hungry so it’s time to eat cake!
