Map of lines served by the Merewether lines of Burwood Coal Mining Co.
The Prince of Merewether – Bergman & Co.
The Merewether line tunnelled through a ridge to get to Glenrock Lagoon and the nearby coal deposit. This is the view at the southern end of the tunnel. In later years the tunnel was declared unstable, so one crew alighted the startb of the tunnel and let the train move slowly through the tunnel. Another crew waited at the tunnel exit and boarded the locomotive for the remainder of the trip. This line closed in 1944.

David Merewether is the Wealden Times’ photographer at large and the sort of man who quietly charms and reassures nervous homeowners when the WT team arrives with armfuls of flowers and bags of camera equipment to do a feature on their residence.
