The astonishing aspect of the world of art is that there is no such thing that should be considered astonishing by any standards but it still manages to make us feel that things are astonishing. That is why we are going to be talking about life like figurative sculptures that are astonishingly so real that we can literally make the expression of the sculpture you are looking at. In many instances, especially when it comes to classical art, sculptures lean more towards suggestive, symbolic and indicative rather than realistic. But in this article we are talking about figurative sculptures that are astonishingly lifelike. It not like these gleaming and glowing delicate glass sculptures but still mesmerizing nevertheless.
"The romantic concept of The Angel speaks of love and death, beauty and frailty, timelessness and temporality."
In her salient text, In The Wake: On Blackness and Being, scholar Christina Sharpe delves into the multiple definitions of “wake,” which span from “the path behind a ship, keeping watch with the dead, (to) coming to consciousness.” “In the wake,” Sharpe writes, “the past that is not past reappears, always, to rupture the present.” Largely focused on conversations around anti-Blackness and continued violence, the book is rooted in the afterlife of slavery and what sentiments, practices, and memories linger into the current moment, questions that similarly ground the work of artist Nastassja Swift. Artist Willie Cole is known for transforming discarded materials into sculptures with a tenor of interrogation. Much of his three-dimensional work revolves around found objects like high-heels, plastic bottles, or ironing boards that he turns into pieces of cultural commentary, addressing issues of mass production, historical legacies, and identity. The items tend to guide the formation of his assemblages, he says, sharing that, “the objects that I use I see as them finding me, more so than me finding them… I see an object and suddenly I recognize what I can do with the object. Spanish sculptor Isabel Miramontes creates figural bronze sculptures that bring a visual movement to ordinary silhouettes. Her works provide unusual shapes within the body of her subjects, opening up torsos to reveal elongated spirals and horizontal bars that seem to reveal an inner turmoil. Often the faces of her sculptures have blank or passive expressions, unknowing participants to the tangle of bronze that twists below. Miramontes is represented by Canfin Gallery in New York and Lucy B Campbell Gallery in London, where you can see more of her works. More

Kim Simonsson’s figures are made out of ceramics, clay and glass with a touch of Gold and Silver, often covered in a thick white glaze making them look like porcelain. We normally associate porcelain with grandma’s glass cabinet, but Simonsson’s figures do not match this association. His style is definitely Japanese/Manga inspired. The mix of ceramics and gold is just sublime...
Italian sculptor Aron Demetz (cousin of Gehard Demetz, whose work we featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 22) creates wood sculptures that appear distressed, burnt and scarred. The process of working with wood is a fundamental part of Demetz's aesthetic — instead of presenting polished and perfected works, Demetz celebrates the wood's textures and its transformation through various natural processes. The simplified, abstracted human figures can seem like personifications of the wood itself. Demetz is currently exhibiting new works at Gazelli Art House in London through June 5 along with Korean artist Shan Hur for their two-person show, "The Tainted." Take a look at some images of Demetz's sculptures after the jump, images courtesy of the artist.

About The Artwork This sculpture reinterprets in a minimalist contemporary style the sinuous curves of the art nouveau period, to emphasize the passion for life. It suggests a feminine silhouette in thrilling tension between falling and flying. The sculpture is constructed through many different compositions, and transforms itself depending on light and points of views. It is cast in resin with white Carrara marble powder (marmolina) and its surface softly shines. An unfinished part on the bottom reveals the origin of raw matter that has transformed into a sensitive, sensible form. It is a limited signed edition of 8. This sculpture is featured in the short film “Involutati, A Journey of the Soul Through Matter”. Isabelle Thiltgès "Prélude" is a 350 x 90 x 70 cm monumental figurative bronze sculpture of a flying bird. It is a limited edition of 8. Despite the large size of the sculpture, the flying bird emanates a wonderful sensation of lightness. This sculpture is suited to go outdoor. A lighter and less expensive resin version with bronze patina is available for indoor installation. Given the monumental size, this sculpture is cast upon commission. Self-taught through her patient work on clay, which she has been sculpting for more than twenty years, Isabelle Thiltgès, Belgian by birth, currently lives and works in Brussels, where she resettled after some thirty years of Parisian life. Independent and nourished by life, she addresses various themes that are instinctively chosen in line with her sensitivity. "My bronze sculptures invite the viewer to travel. Whether small or large, from birds to inhabited circles, from full faces to sketched human silhouettes, the eye wonders between the solids and hollows shaped by the sharp and essential refined lines that I love so much." Deliberate eclecticism and sobriety combine to highlight the originality of her work, many presents in private collections and regularly exhibited throughout Europe and in the United States; that of an unclassifiable free spirit capable of giving form to the impalpable, of a profundity that she expresses with restraint and authenticity. This majestic flying bird sculpture gives the viewer the impression of truly flying through space. Despite the monumental size of this cast bronze, Isabelle succeeded in transmitting a sense of lightness and freedom that is quite unique.
