An evocative portrayal of vulnerability and resilience, this artwork captures a visage seemingly trapped behind shards of shattered glass. The fragments create a mosaic of emotions: the eyes, a brilliant shade of azure, are filled with a mixture of hope and melancholy. They stand out as windows to a soul, yearning for freedom and understanding amidst a fractured world. The play of lights casts a spectrum of hues upon the shards, illuminating the subject's freckled skin, delicate lashes, and the faint blush of her cheeks. Each piece of broken glass tells its own story, distorting the image in varying degrees, yet collectively presenting a vivid, almost palpable emotion. The atmosphere is saturated with tension. The cold, jagged edges of the shards juxtapose the soft, warm features of the subject, emphasizing her fragility in the face of adversity. Yet, amidst the chaos, there is a sense of resilience. The eyes, though surrounded by fragmentation, remain intact, undeterred, and piercing through the chaos. This masterpiece resonates with themes of perseverance, inner strength, and the multifaceted nature of human experiences, reminding viewers of the beauty that can be found even in brokenness.
Bouke de Vries works with ceramic assemblage to reinterpret historical pottery in multi-part sculptures. The Dutch artist studied at the prestigious Central St. Martin’s in London and worked in high fashion before pivoting to ceramics conservation and restoration in the early 1990’s, which he learned at West Dean College. Confronting the moral dilemmas around valuation of imperfect artifacts in his vocational practice, de Vries challenges the value of imperfection, damage, and cultural history in his exploded artworks. About Entitled "Pieces in Plexus," this mosaic work by Japanese artist Toyoharu Kii tells a story of nature and rebirth. As with many of Kii's works, the lively and chaotic field of white marble tesserae represents the damage inflicted upon the earth by human activity. In the aftermath of wreckage, life returns slowly, sickened and rendered in shades of red. With time, nature begins to heal itself, cutting through the devastation with a thin current of color. In the artist's own words, "Pieces in Plexus is a story of broken fragments. They were buried in soil and reappeared with leaves." A leader of the cross-cultural craft resurgence, Japan-based artist Toyoharu Kii creates his intricate mosaics with hand-cut Italian marble and smalti, Venetian glass made by the same Italian family for over 400 years. Using traditional Italian techniques, Kii’s art is nonetheless modern.

Boodi Blu is a London jeweler who makes beautiful, clever pieces out of broken pieces of vintage and antique china, puzzled together with small metal fittings. I just saw them…
An exquisitely contemporary sensibility is exuded by this precious artwork, where the per se fragmented nature of the mosaic gets intensified by the effect of a broken mirror. The subject, appearing hence torn apart, is a headless body inspired by an Egyptian sculpture here adapted through an artful distribution of ceramic tiles and plaster on a panel. An authenticity certificate is included with purchase.

'I Am Here' - Irit Levy Mainly art on Flickr Mosaic dynamics This statement by Krishnamurti reminds me of the innate dynamic in mosaic art - “A mind which is seeking permanency soon stagnates; like that pool along the river, it is soon full of corruption, decay. Only the mind which has no walls, no foothold, no barrier, no resting place, which is moving completely with life, timelessly pushing on, exploring, exploding – only such a mind can be happy, eternally new, because it is creative in itself.” By its very nature, mosaic art is particularly dynamic because

A Love heart mosaic made from tiny beach pottery fragments. I love the idea of taking something old, worn and broken and giving it a new purpose. This pottery is many years old. Items that have been discarded in the sea and worn down by the waves. I collect all my own materials with the help of my children. We love to walk the beaches near our home in Scotland collecting beach treasures along the way This picture is in a 6” x 6" box frame. The picture can be wall mounted or free standing.
