Caretaker’s Cabin, Mt. Mulanje, Malawi Submitted by Thomas Wilson / @thomspictures
Our "Vorwerk" (Caretaker's Cabin), a "dose mit emaille und brillanten" (jewelbox) in the High Sierras at Grizzly Ranch. A cup of Polish, a dash of Russian, 3 kilos of Norge, plenty of Prussian, Mecklanburg'er, Hansa, Viking, Baltic, and Scandihoovian..... It all depends on where the borders were drawn at any given time in history. In the end it just ends up being: Architecture from "the LAND of the BLUE EYES". Zakopane in the Sierras. Can you smell the wood burning fire? With inspiration from the architecture of the alpine village called Zakopane in the Carpathian Alps, in the Tatras Mtns along the border between Poland and Slovakia. The area is known as the podhale and the people are called goral. The roof lines and gable ends are typical of this region, but the architectural accoutrements come from an area we refer to as "the Land of the Blue Eyes". The roof ridge and stallion ornamentation, called an okhlupen, comes from the Dvina River region of NW Russia. The window carvings take their inspiration from the choir stalls in the cathedral Dom St. Petri in Bremen, Germany, an old Hansa Federation Port City. The window shutters are inspired by the Inn of Lillehammer, Norway, and the support posts are replicas of the corner posts at the Vikingsholm architectural site on the shores of Lake Tahoe, here in our Sierra Nevada Mountains. Vikingsholm is considered by most, to be the finest rendition of baronial Scandinavian/Viking architecture in North America. The wide chinking between the logs is typical of Bohemia and Silesia, as well as prevalent in our National Parks here in the USA. The stone work is dry stacked Montana basalt, and the reclaimed rafter tails are from old barns in Canada. www.mountainliving.com/article/ancestral-aesthetic
Nestled amongst the historic inns and grand homes of Camden, you will find a true gem, Caretakers Cottage. This wonderful Maine vacation rental home is a short walk from downtown Camden's restaurants, shops, public library, harbor and schooner excursions. A great home-base to explore day trips along the coast of Maine.
Nevada's mountains are no strangers to stunning properties, but Crystal Pointe - which climbs up verdant hillside overlooking the sparkling waters of Lake Tahoe - is something else.
