My cousin found this beautiful shell on a beach in Bahia de Los Angeles in a recent visit to Baja California, Mexico. While they are shaped like a nautilus shell, they are almost paper thin and translucent, and quite small. Here's what I found on Wikipedia: "The argonauts (genus Argonauta, the only extant genus in the Argonautidae family) are a group of pelagic octopuses. They are also called paper nautiluses, referring to the paper-thin eggcase that females secrete. This structure lacks the gas-filled chambers present in chambered nautilus shells and is not a true cephalopod shell, but rather an evolutionary innovation unique to the genus Argonauta." We photographed it by placing it on a small hand mirror and then used a YN560-II in a 24 inch softbox above and to camera left at about 7 o'clock. We wanted to put bounce some light onto the mirror to reveal the interior of the shell. The light was triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N radio trigger.
