A new book captures stunning works by an artist who uses nature, and his own body, as a medium
For nearly three decades, Cuban painter Tomás Sánchez has been painting serene landscapes of calm waters and verdant forests full of towering palms and dense shrubs. Now part of a lengthy series, his realistic works focus on nature’s immensity as they contrast massive waterfalls and miles of endless treetops with a nondescript figure, who often can be found seated or standing amongst the lush scenery. In a statement, Sánchez explained how his practice of meditation informs his work. More

A sense of solitude and the finitude of time pervade the quiet, introspective works by Sung Hwa Kim. Rendering overgrown landscapes shrouded by night, the Korean artist wields the connection between ephemerality and memory, sometimes invoking nostalgia, as well. His acrylic paintings focus on fleeting acts like a glowing lightning bug or butterfly hovering above the grass while utilizing light to “symbolize the spirit of things we once loved, have lost, despair and longing. The act of seeing is complicated, especially when it comes to the challenges of art. On a recent wander through the Lower East Side, I found myself in three galleries currently hosting solo exhibitions that require a closer look to reveal the details hidden from the first glance.
Los Angeles-based illustrator and storyboard artist Victo Ngai produces layered illustrations that reveal elaborate worlds filled with unexpected details. A beautiful expanse of unencumbered nature stands guarded inside a wide-mouthed bullfrog, while a seaside city burns with brilliant flames in the fabric of a heroine’s dress. Each scene inspires the viewer to pause, making sure they haven’t missed a key character that might unlock the work’s tangled narrative. Ngai is a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, and provides illustrations for clients such as The New York Times and The New Yorker. More

Elizabeth Colborne never saw the Northwest landscape as a postcard portrait. Dividing her time between the Northwest and New York City, she produced a series of color woodblock prints of local landmarks like Mt. Baker and Bellingham Bay that bring a sophisticated cosmopolitan sensibility to the depiction a region still emerging from the surrounding wilderness. Now, Seattle-based curator David Martin and Bellingham’s Whatcom are offering the first retrospective show of Colborne’s work since her death in 1948.

Self-taught artist Tiffany Bozic explores a wide range of natural themes in her tightly rendered depictions of wildlife. Drawing inspiration from her “extensive travels to wild places” and exposure to various research specimens at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco, the artist works most frequently with multiple layers of watered down acrylic paint on panels of maple wood that lends a distinctly natural and often realistic level of detail to each of her paintings. Monica Rohan paints self-portraits in which she is eternally hiding behind and searching within vibrant, patterned textiles and luscious, green plants. The Australian artist is inspired by her own "rural-idyll" childhood and the "internal longing of the 19th century novel." Her characters express these investigations through a sentiment of both innocent play and anxious isolation. Forests and flowers, dresses and blankets become extensions of her characters' physical and psychological beings. By always concealing the women's faces, Rohan relies on body language to convey the characters' emotional states. For example, some characters are seen from a birds-eye view, curled with their heads burrowed in patchwork quilts. Others thrash and dance; the movement causing the women's outer dresses to become indistinguishable from their physical forms.
Artem Rogowoi’s oil and gold leaf paintings offer quiet, yet rich moments. In works like "Chamomile," the artist's rendering of elements such as hair or a bed of leaves carry unexpected textures. And each carries a fantastical quality, even when packed with everyday elements.

About The Artwork 'Grass Cocoon' was the first significant piece that I created in my 'Women in Nature' series. My goal was to embed my model into the grass and to make her as much a part of the landscape as I possibly could. This was my first attempt to describe humanity's relationship with the natural world as I see it. We are bound to the natural world, just as my model is bound to the earth in this piece. There can be no"us" without "it." This piece is characteristic of my use of materials, models, and processes. It demonstrates my commitment to demonstrating and reaffirming a harmonious rapport between humans and the natural world.
