Elizabeth Jane Cochran, xornalista que asinaba os seus artigos como Nellie Bly, foi a primeira persoa en facer realidade a aventura de Phileas Fogg, o protagonista da novela de Xulio Verne "A volta ao mundo en oitenta días" Nellie Bly (1864-1922) O 14 de novembro de 1889 partiu do peirao de Hoboken, en Estados Unidos, camiño a Europa. Tiña 25 anos cando iniciou a súa aventura soa, seguindo a ruta do protagonista da novela de Xulio Verne. Durante a travesía, recibiu unha carta de Xulio Verne e da súa muller, invitándoa a que os visitara. Nellie non o dubidou, e ao día seguinte de ler a petición da parella pasaba a tarde conversando con eles na casa que tiñan en Amiens, Francia. Nellie Bly no so fixo realidade o record do personaxe literario, senón que foi máis rápida: conseguiu finalizar o traxecto en 72 días, 6 horas, 11 minutos e 14 segundos. Recolleu o seu periplo nun libro, no que narra a súa aventura, titulado "Volta ao mundo en 72 días". Outra muller, Elizabeth Bisland, facía o mesmo recorrido pero en sentido inverso. Ela necesitou catro días máis para finalizar o traxecto.
