The queer painters taking the stage of contemporary art grew up in a very different world than their predecessors. A generation removed from the AIDS crisis, these artists came of age with relative freedom and security. Now, they are embracing the canon, looking far back into the history of figurative painting and making it their own. We visited the studios of seven of these artists, talking with them about what drives their work and their expansive visions for what it can mean for the world.

Born in 1979, Albin Veselka's interest in art came at an early age. He is very grateful to his parents who were instrumental in promoting his emerging talent. In 2006 Albin received his BFA from Brigham Young University Idaho. He credits the knowledgeable and student oriented faculty of the BYUI art department for giving him "the tools all representational artist must have to open the door to communicating in the visual arts".

Saturday, September 19, 2009 Bernie Fuchs, 76, Dies; Illustrator Defined Mid-Century Era By Adam Bernstein, © The Washington Post Bernie Fuchs, 76, an illustrator whose influential work for magazines ranging from Cosmopolitan to Sports Illustrated seamlessly blended qualities of traditional narrative with hints of abstract composition, died of esophageal cancer Sept. 17 at a care facility in Fairfield, Conn. He lived in nearby Westport. Mr. Fuchs was adept at balancing art and commerce.
