©Ron Hicks "Wait, is that a Degas? A Cassatt?" is probably something Ron Hicks gets a lot. As a contemporary artist, Hicks' talent for blending Impressionist and abstract techniques will make you do a double take, as his languid, cafe lovers could just as easily be mid-embrace circa 1870 or 2017.
About Roman school late 17th - early 18th century - Follower of Niccolò Codazzi (Naples, 1642 - Genoa, 1693) Pair of fantastic architectural whims with classical ruins and figures Oils on canvas, cm. 47 x 60, framed cm. 85 x 68 A suggestive perspective of classical architectural ruins dominates the scene in this beautiful pair of capricci, whose style characteristics appear to be influenced by the models designed by Viviano (1604 - 1670) and his son Niccolò Codazzi (1642-1693), who collaborated in the atelier paternal in Rome before pursuing an independent career. The present pendant, in particular, is the work of an author active between the end of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, very similar to the ways of Niccolò Codazzi in the central period of his Roman production, when he used to collaborate with some bamboccianti, who usually inserted small contour figures to animate the whims. After his youth in Naples and the activity in his father's workshop, Niccolò Codazzi, with his works from the Roman period, began to develop an independent artistic personality, and the present painting represents an excellent model of this process. In his architectural views and inventions he prefers a clear and luminous palette, marked by deep chiaroscuro contrasts and a decisive volumetric rendering. As for the composition, on the other hand, it reproduces the Roman ruins with a faithful analysis, or, if built with imagination, they always had to be based on a level of verisimilitude, with the light that exposed the monumental architectures in ruins, the crumbling arches , the corroded walls, leaning against ancient monuments now invaded by vegetation. Both the canvases and the frames are in good condition, with some signs of aging. The pictorial material is preserved in an excellent way. Auguste Toulmouche’s 1866 painting “The Hesitant Fiancée” is making the rounds on TikTok FYPs across the globe, inviting women of all ages to not only marvel at and meme-ify the bride’s pissed off scowl, but see themselves in it, too.
This post is a bit of a departure from my normal blog material (namely— nature, plants, poetry, ecology and metaphor), but the current news cycle and its endless ugly resurgence of sexism, violence, and misogyny (deep currents coming come up to the surface to be exhumed) has me thinking of the old ways that are...
Painted in 1817, this highly important sketch is an early preparatory study for The White Horse, the first of Constable's famous ‘Six-Footers’, which he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1819. This magnificent flower painting was rapidly executed with broad strokes of thin, translucent paint. Two plumes of white flowers with orange speckles and stamens, in a brass Middle Eastern jardiniere, stand out from the deep green background. Remnants of blue ...
Gustave Dore (1832-1883) created the most popular illustrations and engravings in history. He reminds me of the top character actors of all time—you know their work, but you don't know their names. Gustave Dore was the most famous living artist in the world during his lifetime.
Ancient Greece produced some of the wildest and most memorable folklore known to humanity. Famous films like "Hercules" and "Troy" derive their storylines from some of these aged legends. Here are my picks for the 10 best stories from ancient Greek mythology.
Most people know the saying "Eyes are the windows to your soul." Well, this 22-year-old artist from the Maldives created a whole project based on that. Her name is Maldha Mohamed and she paints beautiful, realistic eyes full of emotion. "I felt inspired by painting the eyes as I'm a firm believer that the eyes are the only part of one's being that can truly depict a person's vulnerability," she told Bored Panda.

At one point in his life, Richard Tennant Cooper had dreams of some day being recognised as one of the best artists in the world. Let’s be fair, why not the best artist in the world? We all have dreams – but somehow life intervenes. Tennant Cooper had talent, good talent, maybe great talent, maybe … Continue reading "The Horror, The Horror! Lippert: The Young Apprentice. But if course it is the reflection of the older man which grabs the attention, not the apparent and superficial subject of the picture. re-blogged from blastedheath
Cats are very beautiful to look at; their poses are so elegant it looks as if they were the subjects of great masters' paintings. One cat in Russia takes this to another level by actually being a subject of many famous paintings done by the greatest artists of all time. The beautiful, plump, ginger tabby with an awesome name, Zarathustra, sneaks comfortably into paintings and fits right in. "If I fits, I sits or lays, in whatever the artist portrays," said he.
We were delighted to find out that Renaissance era artists created paintings where cats are being fed with a spoon like little babies.

We’re all (well, me, and maybe Patrick) pretty excited about VW’s announcement of their new I.D. Buzz Cargo van concept, because it’s the most likely candidate to re-spawn the custom van craze of the 1970s. As you know, custom vans means airbrushed murals, so now’s the time to start planning yours.
