This month’s multi-room tile tour is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of Minneapolis’s artistic community. Food critic and WCCO star, Jason DeRusha is a staple in the Minneapolis community. When Jason set out to redesign his kitchen with Construction2Style, he not only wanted to create a space that reflected his personal style, he also wanted to incorporate as many local makers and businesses as possible. Having recently designed his own Mercury Mosaics backsplash, fellow WCCO star Matt Brickman recommended our handmade tile to the DeRushas. We not only had the opportunity to help Jason create the perfect kitchen backsplash, we also helped his wife Alyssa to bring to life her dream bathroom. Kitchen At first the DeRusha family only intended for a small kitchen update, but they soon decided they wanted to take their remodel a step further. With a keen interest in local artists, they turned to local artisans like Hennepin Made for lighting, Cambria for countertops, and Nic Frost Cabinetry for cabinets. If you know Jason from the DeRusha Eats show, you know he has a bold, quirky personality. While the plan for the tile began as something more simple, it became clear that we needed a bolder, more dramatic backsplash to complement DeRusha's personality. To achieve this, we developed a palette of rich, dark hues – espresso browns, denim blues, and steel grays. We also mixed up the tile shapes, incorporating both Medium Diamonds and Large Hexagons. Following six design rounds, we landed on the perfect backsplash along with the Construction2Style team. For more on this project, visit our blog “Jason DeRusha’s Dramatic Kitchen Backsplash” Geo-Hex Pattern - 1013 Denim. Medium Diamonds - 22E Blue Opal, 155 Steel, 60 Silver Lining.Photography - Chelsie Lopez Guest Bathroom The inspiration didn’t stop with the kitchen. Alyssa ReDrusha had her own vision for the bathroom – something that was indicative of her personal taste and fashion-forward design prowess. Pulling inspiration from the Fox Homes MN statement shower wall, the shower features a glossy teal subway tile. In order to create an even more modern look, we put a spin on a classic and stacked the subway tile, as opposed to staggering it. The tile floor also showcases blue and green tiles along with unique textures. By choosing to use glazes with variation, we were able to give additional depth to the bathroom. We also crafted a signature quilt pattern to add in a touch of art deco. With the tile pattern and color scheme locked in, Alyssa landed on a stunning, floral wallpaper – Eden Nightfall by Rebel Walls – to pull the entire space together. A glass panel shower along with teak accessories and gold accents create a bathroom that’s boho yet regal and sleek. For more on this project visit our blog,

Alyse Emanuel - Oil Painter In her oil paintings, she uses tonality to investigate three-dimensional space by creating depth with lights and darks. By leaving areas of blank canvas next to areas of paint, she plays with fracturing the image and causing a confusion between figure and ground. This can create a sense of both flatness and depth, making background and subject appear to shift back and forth. It also draws attention to the abstract quality of paint rather than the representation of objects. By emphasizing the importance of all parts of an image and de-emphasizing object labels, like

You’ve finally decided what tile you want for your floors, bathroom shower or kitchen backsplash. The hardest part is over, but now you have the challenge of figuring out how much tile you need for your project. Fear not: this part is simple once you break down the steps! Looking to calculate your space's measurements? Watch our helpful how-to below and download our interactive Tile Guide and Calculator. 1. Gather Your Materials The very first step? Make sure you have all the necessary supplies for measuring your space. This includes a tape measure, a calculator, and something to write with. 2. Draw and Label Your Space Next, draw or print a photo of the area you’re looking to tile. Having a visual aid will allow you to show the separate sections and their respective measurements. If your backsplash is one long, uninterrupted rectangle then measuring the width and height is all it takes. Things become a little more tricky when the height of your backsplash is segmented by cabinetry, windows, or the height of a stove vent. Whenever the height changes, that becomes a new section. We recommend labeling each section with a capital letter A through Z in order to keep everything straight. 3. Measure and Add From here, you’ll measure the width and height of every section in inches. Mark the measurements on your picture as you go along. You’ll multiply the width and the height for every section to get the total area in square inches. Next, add up the total inches of each section. Subtract the measurement for areas where there is no tile, such as a window section. You’ll take this value and divide it by 144 to get the total number of square feet. 4. Account for Overages Because you might end up needing extra tile, we suggest that you take into account a 10% overage, or 20% if you’re using Moroccan Fish Scale tile. You factor this in by multiplying the total square footage by 1.1 or 1.2 for fish scales. 5. Shower Example Now that we have the basic steps for measuring walls and getting the proper tile amount, let’s run through this shower example. As you can see, there are several different sections in this shower. Each section is marked off from A-Z, and reflects the width and height of every component. There are three key sections that need to be tiled – Sections A, B and C – but there are also sections for the shower niche, bench and window. We multiply the width and height for each individual section, then add them up together. All the sections add up to 11,452. We then subtract the measurements for segments M and H where there isn’t any tile: 11,452 - 330 - 216 = 10,906. 5. Putting it All Together We divide 10,906 by 144 to get the total square feet, which is 75.7. Lastly, we multiply 75.7 by 1.1 to account for overages. This gives us a total square footage of 83.3. Round that up to 84 and now all ya do is hop over to the website and place your order. Need Help? Let Us Know! If you’re still feeling confused or overwhelmed about getting the right measurements, don’t sweat it. You can send us the measurements and we’ll help calculate the total square footage, or check the math to make sure it all adds up correctly. Our job is to make your everyday life a little brighter and more colorful; we’re also here to help make it easier. It doesn’t matter if you have questions about measurements or designs, our team is ready with answers. We hope to hear from you soon! Hi there, my name is Maggie and I've worked at Mercury Mosaics for almost 11 years! I started out as a tile maker and worked my way through the studio glazing, loading tile into kilns, shipping, and laying out everything from fish scales to mosaics. If there's one thing I know about the world of tile is that it can be a totally complicated and mystical place. Luckily, our mesh-mounting process makes it super easy to understand all the nitty gritty details of laying out handmade tile... Read on to find out more about mesh sheets: the answer to your install questions! 1. Standard Bohemian Backsplash Mandy and Kevin of 188 sqft decided to take their RV to the next level and add a touch of personality to their kitchen with our handmade tile. They decided to go with one of our most popular standard tiles, Small Hexagons in 1036W Bluegrass. When ordering standard tile, you have two options. As mentioned above, you can either choose to have your tile mesh-mounted or loose. We always recommend mesh-mounting because it will save your installer the headache of installing tile piece by piece. In Mandy and Kevin's case, they received 18 easy to install sheets rather than 432 pieces of loose tile. The sheets that we make are also interlocking, meaning they fit together with every other sheet, whether they’re being connected on the right, left, top, or bottom sides. The goal is to have uniform grout lines that make every tile look like it was custom fit for your space As seen by the progression below, first we glue pieces of tile to approx. 1 sq ft of mesh. We go through this process until we've reached the amount of square feet needed for your project. Next, we carefully pack them and ship them right to your front door! Patti Wagner is part of a small husband and wife team repurposing old properties to give them new life while making her home a little sweeter each day. Our owner and founder, Mercedes Austin having grown up in a historic property, knows that it’s a fact that this league of renovating is entirely in its own class. It should also be highlighted that she’s a mother of three which all points to the true passion fueling her work. Patti is self-made, born in Laos but her family fled the war torn country when she was four. She lived in two refugee camps in Thailand, and one in Philippines before going through the vetting process to arrive in the US when she was about seven. We have a lot of love and respect for Patti –she never takes the easy route and when she commits to something – she’s all in. Continue reading to see Patticake Wagner's ensuite bath mood board and tile selections! The Before Patti and her husband have done a great amount of work to renovate and restore their 1927 Tudor Home. From converting the attached garage into a brand new kitchen, to restoring all of the home’s original windows, the Wagners remind us the beauty of vintage charm. Her work to restore the character and story of our beloved Minneapolis Architecture shines from her creative touch. For that, we are excited to share our journey of her Tudor ensuite bath renovation in Linden Hills. We should technically say “creation” since the “ensuite bath” started as a sleeping porch. Check out her beautiful home below, including a before photo of the soon to be Ensuite Bath! Patti's Moodboard Patti came to us with a mood board already made to show us the overall tone she had set for her ensuite bath. Warmth through the vanity, old world, classic and timeless. From there, we worked through the process of taking this vision and curate tile design options for Patti.

Grout is much more than the cement that fills the spaces between tiles - it's a crucial component to your project's overall design. It's common to wait until the last minute to choose your tile grout color, but taking time to consider your options may help your decision in the long-run. Here are 5 ways to pick the perfect tile grout color, considering the importance of grout choice on your overall aesthetic. As an illustration of the impact that grout color can have, look at the example below. In the image, we have the same tile with a dark grey and a white grout. To see the difference, try covering one side with your hand or a piece of paper then swapping to cover the other side. You'll notice that the grout color effects the color of the glaze, the appearance of the shape and overall feel of the tile. Large Hexagon - 47 Vermont Pine - Order Samples & Tile HERE! 1. If there's a tile color you're in love with and you'd like to take the design a step further with a complimentary grout color, we're happy to make a recommendation. Order a color sample from us to see it in your own lighting. Here's a helpful link to view grout colors from our recommended brand, Laticrete. When 2020 kicked off, my major goals for Mercury Mosaics included: Connect all areas of our company so our team could better understand what the other teams are doing – we call this the synergy plan! Implement our company-wide bonus system. Photography - Alejandro Romero & Aili Juusola. Reflecting on Personal Loss By sheer existence & in good health, I am reminded of the persistence, strength & gratitude I have that I’m able to be posting a blog on a website for a company that still stands with a team fully intact after the year this has been. In February, personally, I was hit pretty hard with the loss of my mom. You won’t find any presence of her online, however, it was my honor to be part of this article written about her leaving a legacy I know she would want to be remembered for. Part of my love of Minneapolis comes from this relentless mom of mine. Before this year I didn’t know there was a term called red lining. What I learned is that the heart of where I grew up was in that red map. The neighborhood that shaped who I am today, the rich cultures that have always been a normal to me and the diversity of my friends in school and every bus I rode to school on – it has made me into who I am today. Being exposed to what I’ve learned this summer – it made me respect and love my mom even more and understand her drive to make something better. As a family, we didn’t run to the suburbs with some of our friends in the neighborhood, we stayed and fought for our neighborhood and never gave up. As I read through the comments in the article of what people said about my mom: “We must remember that one determined person can make a significant difference and that a small group of determined people can change the course of history.” It is with this sentiment that fueled our team as we led this tile operation through 2020 to the other side. There was a story my mom used to read to me called: “The Little Engine That Could” and the takeaway was a phrase I still say to myself: “I think I can, I think I can, I think I can….” Photography - Alejandro Romero & Aili Juusola. Mercury Mosaics #2 To maintain the integrity of our current studio space in the Thorp building, it was time to finalize plans for a second location. As expected, 2020 presented added barriers to finalizing well: everything! Things we anticipated to get done in March were finished in late September setting a number of logistics back. Because of how I was raised, I stuck to the purpose driving this project and never took my eye off the mountain. Without making this second facility happen, the livelihood of my team was at stake. Without peeling off this level of production, our Northeast studio was in jeopardy of becoming overcrowded, causing uncomfortable working conditions in less than 18 months. I’ve seen it in past spaces, because we’d have to add kilns to keep up with demand and I refused to let my team make tile in unideal studio conditions. As a young company, we’d already gone through this in 2 spaces. The safety of my team was at stake in persevering through the obstacles to get location #2 on the map. I continued to navigate with a purpose to alleviate large-scale production demands for our most popular shapes and colors. As of this writing, we are on track to have small batches of tile beginning to be made in our new location, in Wadena, in late March 2021. With larger batches being anticipated in April through June 2021. Drawing by: Di Zhou & Ruth Baccam. Elevate My Internal Team I truly think, and this is just my personal opinion, that it’s far more effective to grow an organization from within. It’s WAY slower, but it’s the most-successful I’ve seen things happen (& gel) at Mercury Mosaics. It really falls back to my belief in the underdog. I’ve also hired from the top and it wasn’t always a picnic – let’s leave it at that. I’ve seen such magic from building the team from within, or simply-hiring with the opportunity to grow. My bias is that I was a kid with no formal business education, not necessarily on the right path but had a passion for making things. Tile happened to be a channel for this passion and hey, maybe you’ll see us branching out into other maker-universes, but for now: tile. Why do I champion the underdog? I am an underdog at the core - owning that I sweat to get to where I am. Everyone deserves a chance. There’s a certain grit, persistence and authenticity when you have someone who knows what it is to not have everything handed to you and understands the value of working for something. I see a lot of heart in this person and they have the most kindness & humility - I think an entire organization can be built from this. By elevating my team, we’ll make more room to bring others into the team, thus creating more opportunities. I think what 2020 has taught me is that we are more capable and resilient than I ever knew. We’re living the mission that: “Many hands make light work” and day-to-day just feels a whole lot better. There’s a liberation to make 2021 shine & go deeper with our community mosaic work to do the most good. 2

Every year the Pantone Color Institute releases its Color of the Year to represent the general tone of the world, and this year is no different. The ballots are in and they chose 2 colors this year to acknowledge the greyness of 2020 with “Ultimate Grey” and the light at the end of this long and crazy tunnel, with “Illuminating”. While these two colors can be used together, the point of these very different hues is meant to have each stand on its own as a complementary tone for the other, thus supported each other. As Pantone puts it, this pairing is “A marriage of color conveying a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting”. Continue reading to see some exciting ways to use these two hues with handmade tile! Ultimate Grey Grey tones are a common neutral palette for any space. While the color grey is known for symbolizing neutrality and balance it can also represent dullness. We like to think that by highlighting the textures and variations of our grey glazes that it transforms into an exciting hue rather than a dull one. By creating clean and soft spaces with differing shades of grey, our handmade tile can make any space feel like home! For more neutral glaze palettes, visit our blog

A Resource for our Trade Friends Mercedes Austin here! As Owner & Founder of Mercury Mosaics, I've always had big dreams for ways to help clients visualize our tile in their space. A big part of doing this successfully, is using digital tools to collaborate with all the amazing designers, builders and architects within the industry. From my first opportunity to work with an architect nearly 20 years ago to bring their vision to life; or that initial designer who took a chance on me before my tiles even came on mesh – I’ve always had a soft spot for trade professionals. I am excited to announce that Mercury Mosaics tile selections will now be available in Chief Architect - a professional home design software for residential home design, interior design, and remodeling. An Exciting Milestone Rolling out the launch of Mercury Mosaics tile in Chief Architect is a huge milestone for us, and we couldn't be more excited. Balancing this by supporting jobs set in a healthy working environment, with access to health care, PTO, maternity leave and in these summer months – central air. We’re doing it and safely while socially distancing. A Digital Connection Now, more than ever before, the power of digital design and collaboration are important tools keeping us connected while being apart. With this time of social distancing and working remotely, the team at Mercury Mosaics immediately saw the importance of empowering and connecting our friends in the trades with tools for design at home. While we are analog at heart, technology to enhance the use of our handcrafted gems within the Chief Architect platform. We’ve always claimed to be more than a handmade tile company. We base our craft around creativity, strategy, and teamwork. We don’t fit into the traditional mold of a tile manufacturer. We are totally in our own lane and we wouldn’t have it any other way. Continue reading to find out what being a handmade, artisan tile company means to us... How it Started We can’t say enough about our mover and shaker, Mercedes Austin. Our humble and motivated tile queen deserves her own section in every blog we write. Mercedes started Mercury Mosaics 17 years ago as a young, solo, female artist who constantly combated all the people telling her not to follow her dreams. She put all of her energy into Mercury Mosaics and eventually became a business woman running a successful company to allow others to shine creatively. “Mercury Mosaics has become a beacon for creatives to work, to have a day job in the arts and many of us leave here daily to go do other parts of our lives. Mercury Mosaics isn’t the sum of it all, it’s a player in a bigger picture. My concept is to have an environment where people can work hard, with a team and see how the parts become the whole and if they stay with me, I’m grateful, if they phase out to do their creative passion as a full time gig and I know MM had a part in it – it’s fulfilling.” -Mercedes Austin To read more about the beginnings of Mercury Mosaics, visit Girl Talk HQ's blog
