Inspired by the relics of his parents’ past as Czech publishers and book smugglers, Martin Tomsky (previously) produces laser-cut illustrations that introduce depth with several layers of plywood in varying tones. Originally immersed in drawing detailed scenes on paper, Tomsky transferred his skills to the 3D, creating stories that seem tangled in lore and feature the outlines of animal skeletons, dense forestry, and mythical beasts. The London-based artist aims to create work that speaks to craft, illustration, and sculpture, each piece serving as both a decorative object and wall-mounted story. More

Paul Roden and Valerie Lueth, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-based artistic duo, has unveiled their “Overlook” woodcut print, an epic work of art that they spent the last 2 years (on and off) designing and making. The dedicated duo, which runs the Tugboat print shop, painstakingly cut trees, leaves, grasses, rivers and mountains.
During the month of December, I immersed myself in a little papercutting. It was heaven to focus and explore a single medium for a few weeks. The result was several new shadowbox sculptures, some are pictured here, a brief show, and brisk sales with the majority going home tucked under the arms
During the summer (also known as the Wedding Season) this blog averaged one post a month. Now that there's finally time to breathe, I can barely hold myself back from posting multiple times a week! I went through my photos folder and found all the ketubot I'd been commissioned to make, and I mean to share them all with you here, one by one. I feel bad it has taken me this long! I'm sure I'll forget a few, but I'll do my best to include all (the ones I photographed, at least). So let's start with this ketubah, aptly named GINKGO & ORCHIDS. Sure there's a hydrangea in there as well, but what this ketubah is all about is the ginkgo leaves and the orchid flowers. I love these leaves so much, they're bursting out of the frame! This ketubah was a custom order commissioned in May by Allison & William for their 5th wedding anniversary which took place in August. Being an anniversary present this was not a usual request for me, and I was thrilled to be asked to bring the idea to life! 13X19 inches big, their one directive was to make the gingko leaves eye catching. I was excited for the challenge. FOR MORE PHOTOS OF THIS KETUBAH, SEE THE CUSTOM KETUBOT GALLERY. This month has been taken over with custom designs for me. I posted on my instagram account (@woodlandpapercuts) sketches that were rejected, and got nice comments on them. Got me thinking of previous custom work I did, and how it turned out. With custom designs I always try to get as much information as I can from my client before I start sketching. Still, sometimes I don't nail it on the first try and the digital preview is used to flesh out the clients' vision of what they really want their ketubah to look like. Above and below are a selection of sketches that were rejected by the clients. No worries, the resulting ketubot were much better! More of my work can be seen in this gallery
Each Light + Paper piece starts out as an original piece of papercutting art, created by L+P founder and artist, Ali. With a blade in hand, Ali carves out little, teeny, tiny bits of paper with extreme precision. The hand-cut original is then scanned and transformed into a wooden lasercut. Measures 16 x 10 inches. Cut from 1/8" birch wood, unstained, unvarnished. This piece is available unframed or framed. Unframed piece is simply the wooden lasercut piece - it can be displayed directly onto a wall using 2-4 finishing nails - hang the piece by sticking the nails through the existing holes in the piece. Frame details: Piece will be mounted onto a white 16x20" matte board and framed in a birch 16x20" shadowbox frame with acrlyic front (front is not glass).
