In honour of Paul Gauguin’s birthday, BBC Culture asked readers to share their favourite paintings by the French Post-Impressionist painter.
Momenteel loopt er - nog tot 22 januari dus niet treuzelen als je het nog wilt zien! - in Grand Palais in Parijs een tentoonstelling over Paul Gauguin. En ik ben daar tijdens de kerstvakantie naar gaan kijken. Ik ken Gauguin vooral van zijn kleurrijke werken met Polynesische vrouwen. Maar die maakte hij pas op het einde van zijn leven. Er gaat nog een heel oeuvre aan vooraf en daarvan zag ik wat voorbeelden op deze tentoonstelling. Zo bleek hij niet alleen te schilderen. Maar hij maakte ook aardewerk. En hij bewerkte ook meubelen. Er waren een aantal stillevens met fruit die de titel 'nature morte' meekregen. edito: Woehaha! Maak ik mezelf effe goed belachelijk! Blijkbaar is de correcte term voor stilleven in het frans 'nature morte'. En ik vond dat Gauguin dat zo goed bedacht had 😂 . En de vele taferelen met vrouwen. Badende vrouwen. En badende jongetjes.... Die veelzijdigheid vind ik tof. En herkenbaar. Ik ben natuurlijk geen kunstenares, maar ik maak wel graag vanalles. En net als Gauguin beperk ik me daarbij niet graag tot 1 techniek. Dat heeft als nadeel dat ik vanalles een beetje kan, maar in niks echt uitblink. Maar dat is niet erg: het gaat me vooral om het plezier. Altijd hetzelfde zou me gaan vervelen. Gauguin had daar geen last van, van dat nadeel. Hij blonk duidelijk wel uit in wat hij maakte. Gauguin blijkt net zoals zoveel andere kunstenaars een behoorlijk getormenteerde man te zijn geweest. Op wikipedia las ik zelfs dat er vermoedens waren dat hij verantwoordelijk is voor het afgesneden oor van Van Gogh. Maar misschien is dat gewoon maar een roddel natuurlijk, dat deden ze toen wellicht ook al ;) . Hierboven een zelfportret van de man. De tentoonstelling loopt nog tot 22 januari. Het is bij Grand Palais aan te raden om op voorhand tickets te boeken. En dan moet je nog altijd een beetje aanschuiven. tip: Vroeger komen dan het uur op je ticket aangeeft heeft in dit museum geen zin: je mag pas beginnen aanschuiven op het tijdstip die op je kaart staat. In Grand Palais lopen er altijd verschillende tentoonstellingen en ik had het plan om die avond ook die over fotograaf Irving Penn te bezoeken. Helaas bleek het museum vroeger te sluiten dan ik dacht waardoor ik bij Irving Penn niet meer binnen kon. Maar als je vroeg genoeg gaat loont het de moeite om te checken of er in Grand Palais nog ander moois te zien is dat je zou willen bekijken. En je kan natuurlijk ook altijd het gratis museum Petit Palais binnen springen. Daar moet je gewoon maar de straat voor oversteken.
