A blog about primary school art.
This week in art class we studied the primary colors and self-portraits. We first painted the background then added salt on top to create a unique effect and add texture to our paper. Next, I took a picture of each child and printed out their faces. The students cut them out and painted them black for the silhouette. Here are the results below! These kindergarteners did a great job! Can you guess who is who?
Chalk Pastel Portraits- Marten Jansen inspired Students viewed portraits made by Dutch artist Marten Jansen, discussing use of colour ,line, shape. Kindergarten printmaking with cups It is so hard to teach kindergarten at the beginning of the year! Here is a short easy lesson that the kids really enjoyed. I got the idea from http://galatiak12art.blogspot.com/2014/04/kindergarten-primary-color-cup-prints.html I began the lesson by talking about primary and secondary colors. I played a short two minute video on YouTube by Sesame Street. It's called "Three Primary Colors". Students then printed circles by using a cup dipped in each primary color onto either a black or white piece of paper. Some of the students could see that they created new colors when they overlapped the circles!

These primary colour gradients were painted by year 5 and 6 students. The process is simple but the results are striking. This is a slight variation on my original more detailed Primary Colour Gradient lesson. To read about the process involved please take a peek here. This time around I supplied the students with cardboard shape tracers to cut out their chosen shape before sticking it onto the background gradient. Last time every child used a circle, but I realised that the results would be improved with more variation. What do you think?
Senecio Portraits created by pupils from year 1 and year 2. (Framed image by a year 2 pupil)
Continuing our grade level projects, Kinder and First Grade classes worked together to create some amazing cooperative paintings. Wassily Kandinsky was our artist inspiration. We started with basic shapes and painted right onto the large sheets of paper. After the shapes covered the paper, students connected the shapes with different kinds of lines. Students then worked together to add lots of vibrant color. These are beautiful - please come see them in person on Thursday February 6th at Zilker Family Night! Our school will be open to visitors from 5:30 - 8 pm....hope to see you there!
