When I was a little boy, my Uncle Mike once showed me a small bowl filled with some shiny coins and some polished "gems". Intrigued, I asked him where he got them. He chuckled, and with a gleam in his eye, said in a whisper, "I got these from Pirates of the Caribbean...I jumped out of the boat in the treasure room and scooped up a handful!" I know my jaw must have dropped and my eyes grew wide as he put his finger to his lips and made a "Shhhhh" sound... I have no doubt that my Uncle was once a pirate in a past life.... I know Ryan Pastorino posted the same photo today...we were sitting in the same boat, each of us having duplicate cameras and lens...I find it fascinating to see the different takes on the same scene!

A few more of these character paintings. They are built up in washy layers of acrylic over a very rough pencil sketch xeroxed onto bristol board. Sounds convoluted but actually pretty simple in practice. This style was developed while doing these paintings years ago and is the way I've painted ever since. Maybe something will shake it up one of these days. In the meantime I still enjoy working this way. Thinking I may jump over to something else for the next post but will return to more of these soon. --Starchie
