Another fun activity! In April, we planned an activity that focused on topics that pertain to Emergency Preparedness. We had such fun brain-storming ideas for topics and ways to present them. Eventually, we had to cut a lot of what we thought of, and we probably should have cut a little more! Our rule for planning Enrichment activites is this: It needs to be worthwhile, ie. when the ladies come, they will learn something, be uplifted or strengthened, etc. AND the activity needs to have a fun element that allows the ladies to interact with each other and create friendships and sisterhood. We always put a large flyer in the binders that get passed around each Sunday. We also hand deliver a small size of the same flyer to each woman's home the morning of the activity. We are blessed to live in an LDS-rich neighborhood with small ward boundries. (Oregon) We split the ward up into 4 sections and each presidency member delivers a route. We stick the flyer on the front door with painters blue tape. We include all the less-active sisters and are starting to see some tentative responses! It takes us each about an hour. (Here is the link to the Photoshop file I created to make the flyer. It won't show a preview of the file, but you should be able to download it and edit it in Photoshop.) As the ladies entered the Cultural Hall, they had to pass through an obstacle course to be inducted into a "tribe." (When they finished the course, we gave them a colored strip of fabric to tie around their arm.This way we were able to make the tribes as even as possible. As the women were trickling in, we started playing Jeopardy. We divided the ladies in half for the teams. The game was a lot of fun, with a lot of hilarious answers. If we were to do this over, we would cut it down to 2-3 categories. 5 categories made the game last too long. Next up, the ladies divided into one of three tribes, based on the color fabric band on their arm. We moved over to the relay area. There were 4 obtacles to work through. We allowed the ladies to work in pairs at each station, but one station had to be completed before the next pair could start. The stations were: Food Storage, Gardening, Building a Shelter and Wilderness Survival. Relay course along left side of the gym We didn't specify to core the apples and one team crammed their apples in the jars, core and all! We weren't super picky about correct answers. Just that they named every seed. We thought about having each team put up a dome tent, but it would take up too much room. We put really long strings on the poles. There was a small magnet on the end of the string to attach to the paperclip on the fish. This was the funniest part of the evening! These ladies were such good sports. After a laughter-filled relay, we went back to the chairs and to a 5 minute synopsis of 72 hour kits. We had two ladies in the ward show their kits. They both go about theirs very differently from each other, but are very thorough and prepared. It was nice to see some options! A pack for each family member vs. a large kit for the family. The thought behind what is in each kit is unique, as well. Following that was a short crash coarse in Dutch Oven cooking. The man who taught it was really concise and interesting. After his words, everyone got to taste the yummy lasagna and cornbread that he had made in his dutch ovens. We also provided apple crisp as dessert.
Last month I was looking for a getting to know you game that I could do with a large group of women for Relief Society. After searching for something we could play I came up with my own game. It is called: It is a spin off of the "This or That" game. Here is how it works: We started by having everyone stand on whatever side of the line they wanted. Then I asked everyone to “switch sides if” the statement applied to them. After some of the statements they were asked to tell someone next to them a little more about themselves. I wasn’t sure if the game would go well, but it ended up being a lot of fun and got everyone talking. It was really neat to see who switched sides on some of the statements and who had the same things in common with each other and with you. Here are some of the statements: You like to cook You prefer summer more than winter You have been on a mission… if you switched sides tell someone where You have 4 or more kids You prefer dogs more than cats You were born in (the state you live)…if you didn’t switch sides tell someone where You like to sew You have any grandchildren… if you switched sides tell someone how many You prefer spring more than fall You have ridden a horse You have lived in another state…if you switched sides tell someone where You prefer pie more than cake You have 4 or more siblings You have a pet… if you switched sides tell someone what pet you have and it’s name You prefer morning more than night You were named after someone…if you switched sides tell someone who You like to sing You have participated in a race (like a 5K or marathon) You speak another language…if you switched sides tell someone what languages you speak You prefer mountains more than beach You prefer books more than movies Play an instrument…if you switched sides tell someone what instrument you play You like to play sports or have played on any teams You prefer dark chocolate more than white Chocolate You have traveled out of the country…if you switched sides tell someone where You prefer washing dishes more than doing laundry There are many other things you could add to this list to fit your "getting to know you" group.
Whether you're looking to get your hands on a fun new read or offload books you'll never read again, invite your friends over and make an afternoon of it!

Bear testimony of the doctrine. Invite those you visit to share what they have felt and learned. How Can I Prepare for Temple Worship? Silvia H. Allred, first counselor in the Relief Society general presidency: "The temple is the house of the Lord. He directs the conditions under which it may be used, the ordinances that should be administered, and the standards that qualify us to enter. … Personal worthiness is an essential requirement to enjoy the blessings of the temple. We prepare by obeying the commandments and seeking to do God's will" ("Holy Temples, Sacred Covenants," Liahona and Ensign, Nov. 2008, 113). Elder David B. Haight (1906–2004) of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "We who would attend the temple must be living in a manner which helps us be worthy to enter and fully partake. … We examine our worthiness to enter the temple in … interviews with priesthood leaders. Our signature, with theirs, on our temple recommend testifies of our worthiness to enter the temple" ("Come to the House of the Lord," Ensign, May 1992, 15). What Are the Blessings of Qualifying for and Partaking of Temple Worship? D&C 110:7: "I will manifest myself to my people in mercy in this house." President Howard W. Hunter (1907–95): "Let us hasten to the temple as frequently as time and means and personal circumstances allow. Let us go not only for our kindred dead, but let us also go for the personal blessing of temple worship, for the sanctity and safety which is provided within those hallowed and consecrated walls. The temple is a place of beauty, it is a place of revelation, it is a place of peace" ("The Great Symbol of Our Membership, " Tambuli, Nov. 1994, 6; Ensign, Oct. 1994, 5). D&C 38:32: "I will give unto you my law; and there you shall be endowed with power from on high" (see also D&C 95:8). Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "Elder Robert D. Hales of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles: "The temple endowment blessings are as essential for each of us as was our baptism. For this reason we are to prepare ourselves that we may be clean to enter into the temple of God. Temple work is an opportunity to perform our personal endowments and covenants for the living and also perform these same ordinances for the redemption for the dead. It is for this reason we are instructed in the scriptures to build temples and prepare our lives to be worthy to partake of the sacred temple ordinances and covenants. …" ""The primary purpose of the temple is to provide the ordinances necessary for our exaltation in the celestial kingdom. Temple ordinances guide us to our Savior and give us the blessings that come to us through the Atonement of Jesus Christ" ("Temple Blessings," in Brigham Young University 2005-2006 Speeches [2006], 1, 4). President Gordon B. Hinckley (1910–2008): "Every man or woman who goes to the temple in a spirit of sincerity and faith leaves the house of the Lord a better man or woman. There is need for constant improvement in all of our lives. There is need occasionally to leave the noise and the tumult of the world and step within the walls of a sacred house of God, there to feel His spirit in an environment of holiness and peace" ("Of Missions, Temples, and Stewardship," Ensign, Nov. 1995, 53). © 2009 Intellectual Reserve, Inc. I had to throw together a Relief Society Activity super fast, and this is what we did. It turned out AWESOME!!! I took my ideas from these two blogs; http://pininspired.blogspot.com/2012/05/walk-day-in-my-shoes-rs-activity.html http://www.somewhatplanned.com/2015/09/lds-church-in-her-shoes-relief-society-night/ This was our fun invitation to get the sisters excited! Our stake at that time was gathering donations for Safety Net so we encouraged the sisters to bring a pair of shoes to donate, and any other donations they had. We received a ton of great donations! The dessert for this event was just WAY to fun! We made high heel cupcakes! I am a huge fan of NOFADE cupcake liners. Totally worth the extra cents. You can find these at Walmart, Hobby Lobby, Party stores... I decided to make 2 kinds of cupcakes. Chocolate Oreo and Strawberry Lemonade. So easy. Just make the cake like normal, but add a pudding mix! YUM! Oreo Frosting: 1/2 cup shortening 1/2 cup butter Pinch of Salt 5 Tbsp of milk 1 tsp vanilla 5 cups powdered sugar 1/4 cup Karo corn syrup Cream together shortening and butter. Add pinch of salt and vanilla. Gradually add powdered sugar and milk. Blend well. And corn syrup last, beating an additional 3-4 minutes. Then add finely crushed oreos. Add to your taste! Spread or pipe onto cupcakes. Strawberry Lemonade Frosting 1 cup real butter 1/2 cup seedless Strawberry Jam (You can use seeds, totally a preference) 3-4 cups powdered sugar Mix all ingredients together until fluffy. Spread or pipe onto cupcakes. Add lemon zest to the top of cupcakes for the lemon flavor! We put them together at the church on the table they would be displayed on, because they are fragile. You don't want to have to move them a bunch. Simply frost a simple edge around a Milano Cookie . Found at most grocery stores. cut your Pirouette Waffers in half but at a 45 degree angle. Simply frost the cupcake to your liking. Then place the Milano cookie in the back at an angle, then put some frosting on the 45 degree angle of the Pirouette Waffer and stick that to the bottom of the Milano cookie. It really is so simple, and so cute, and everyone LOVED them! The night of the event, we set up two rows of chairs in a semi-circle, had a few fun high heels next to the shoe quotes, and then the fun high heel cupcake display. We gathered together, sang "Faith in Every Footstep" I gave a little tiny talk about not judging others, walking a mile in their shoes, "what if her story, were my story." Then everyone came up and shared their own shoe story. (Those that wanted to. Most people did!) Then we ate fruit, and high heel cupcakes!!! I thought it turned out to be a super fun night. Some of the stories brought the spirit, others just made you laugh. Stories of shoe being worn for temple service, river rafting trips, a husband buying them after noticing a wife admiring them... so many fun stories. A fun fun night! Here are some of the printables I made to use that night;

Are you planning a Relief Society Activity? Here are 30+ Fun relief society activity ideas your congregation will LOVE!
I don’t know if I’ve mentioned it before, but I’m responsible for all the activities for the women in my ward (that’s Mormon talk for a church congregation). I’ve been doing this for almost two years now, and we have some awesome activities, if I do say so myself. But don’t think I’m really patting myself on the back here. See, I think I’ve come up with exactly . . . ZERO of the ideas. The internet ROCKS for great activity ideas (ok, my committee is a huge help too!). But even with the ideas I’ve found, we usually find a way to improve on them. And since I get so many things from the great web, I thought maybe it was time I give a little back. So I’ll be posting our fabulous activities here once and a while. First up: Friendship Speed Dating. I first got the idea on Pintrest, of course, when I saw this pin: (ok, this is my picture from that night, not hers!) What an awesome idea! Everyone knows that what women really want is to just chat, and the idea of getting to know the sisters better was an awesome one. Biggest problem with her post is that she doesn’t really explain the format too great, and there aren’t any questions at all! So here’s how we did it. First, we had a potato bar dinner (we’ve got several gluten free in our ward, so this is an awesome option to include them.) My amazing crafty person decorated the tables . . . um forgot a picture of that! But we did a polka dot theme – super easy. She did each table a different color of scrapbook papers in different sizes of circles, and then had little nut cups full of color coordinated jelly beans (yes, she admits she’s slightly OCD). We also had the list of questions at each seat so people could look them over as they ate. I didn’t want the questions to be the usual. I wanted to actually get to know something about people, not just where they were born or how many kids they had. We had a great brainstorming session, and came up with this list. I’ve got it in color: Or in black and white for you to use! So here was our format. One side of the table didn’t move – yes that means you don’t get to talk to everyone. But it also means the activity doesn’t last 4 hours. This was also great for some of the older women that don’t move very well. We had a time for 5 minutes each spot. When it was time to switch, my timer friend flipped the lights. And then usually yelled out. And then sometimes did jumping jacks to get people to stop talking and move to the next spot. It took about an hour to get through the line. It was one of the biggest hits we’ve ever had. Now, I also have to admit, we fielded more questions on this activity than any other before (Do I bring my husband because we’re dating? Is this actually ok to do because I’m married? What on earth is speed dating anyway?) But stick with it – it’s great! (if you’d like to follow my rs idea’s board, you can find it here: Yes, I know it’s called Craft Day, but just go with it!)
