with a Katydid for newly hatched chick(s). Three days trying to find a nest and waiting for this bird to show. I think the eggs hatched and we were able to see him returning with food. Returned From 2 weeks in Costa Rica this morning

Exotic birds and their beautiful colors: we all love them! But how much do we know about these marvelous winged creatures? We decided to compile a list of 10 of the our world’s most wonderful species and give you a glimpse over some interesting facts about them.
Resplendent Quetzal (Pharomachrus mocinno). This male quetzal is just growing out his long "tail feathers" that will be their maximum length in May or so. He and his mate have been busy making a nest in a tree where they are hollowing out a new nest. Taken at San Gerardo de Dota, Costa Rica, at the Quetzal Education Research Center field station operated by the Biology Department of Southern Nazarene University, Bethany Oklahoma. They are frugiverous swallowing the fruit whole and later regurgitating the large seed.
One of the big target bird species and specialities for Costa Rica has to be the Resplendent Quetzal. Everywhere you go you see signs of adoration for this bird. What makes me laugh is that it is not even considered as the National bird of Costa Rica. Instead the plain Clay-coloured Robin has that title and it looks similar to a female Blackbird. If I was Costa Rican I'd be a little peeved that such a colourful specimen like the Quetzal did not make the grade.

As I had previously mentioned, we were extremely fortunate with the opportunities we had to view the Resplendent Quetzal. This male is perched under the canopy of the cloud forest in extremely low light. Much to our amazement and delight the bird dropped down from this perch to a small stream running through the forest, hopped in and had a quick bath before returning to the perch! This happened not just once, but three times! This shot was taken at ISO-3200 at 1/30s using a non-IS 400mm lens wide open. The owners of the private land we were shooting on asked that flash not be used, so I was limited to ambient light. I took lots of shots, but the combination of focal length and shutter speed resulted in a low percentage of sharp shots. When the bird dropped down to the stream, there was even less light and I was unable to get a usable photo. With the busy setting the bird was in, I have resorted to some post-processing "clean-up" on this image - something I don't like to do if I can avoid it. I have cloned out the tip of a broken-off stick that was poking into frame in the bottom left corner and have done some selective localized dodging / burning / blurring to tone-down some distractive elements in the background.
