The latest Craft Barn challenge is Retiform. Now, I've done this technique before, but didn't know what it was called. I looked up the meaning of retiform : adjective - composed of crossing lines and interstices; net-like Ah - OK - anyway, that's enough research! I wanted a clean black and white look, with just a little colour (using Distress Inks), and to make the crossing lines more prominent I cut narrow strips of black card. The stamps I have used are all by Ryn, (except the bottom meadow one which is by Indigo Blu), so I am also including this card in Ryn's April Challenge. Happiness is sunshine on my face!

At a recent get together of the Stampin' Up group that I belong to, I was asked to demonstrate some backgrounds created by using various techniques. As promised to the Stampin' Up ladies at our get together I will be posting over the next week instructions and photos of the backgrounds that I demonstrated. The first background is the Retiform Technique which I found on Splitcoast Stampers with a great tutorial . This is a great technique using post-it notes and cardstock scraps to create the masks for the sponging and stamping. I started with a piece of Naturals White cardstock and using a scrap of Naturals White to create the mask, I sponged on Baked Brown Sugar ink for my first line. There is no correct pattern to this, just create your gridlines where you want then to go. Below are a pictures of the first steps, sponging on Baked Brown Sugar to create the divisions where you will be stamping. I sponged so that the ink is on the inside of the lines, however you can sponge so that ink is on the outside of the lines. It just depends upon what effect you want to create, experiment to see which method you like best, just be consistent otherwise the technique will not work. The next step is to sponge a light base colour over the entire piece. I have used Crumb Cake, this is done randomly, leaving some light patches (just make sure that you have inked over the entire piece so that no Naturals White is showing through). You are now ready to start stamping. Mask off the centre piece with Post-it Notes to stamp the first image. It does not matter if you off stamp over the edge of the mask, it does look better if some of the images are stamped off centre or partially off the masked piece. Build up each section using a variety of stamps and inks to create the effect that you want. You continue to mask off the various sections and continue stamping until you have built up the piece and all the sections have been stamped. I used Jet Black Staz-on, Baked Brown Sugar and Crumb Cake for the stamping along with stamps from the En Francais, Backyard Basics, Flowering Flourishes, Papillon Potpourri and Everything Eleanor stamp sets, along with the Music Note Stampin' Wheel. (Tip: I take the stamp off the Stampin' Wheel and fix it to a piece of Perspex to create a stamp which I find much easier to use than the Stampin' Wheel). The sentiment is from the Peaceful Petals stamp set. Once the background piece is finished you can now make your card. I have used a Basic Black card base, along with some Victoria Crochet Trim and the Scallop Oval and Large Oval punches for the sentiment. Inside of the card - I try and finish the inside of my cards to match the front. It just gives a nice finishing touch instead of a blank card inside. This is a very basic technique but you can get some terrific effects with it by using different grid patterns and ink colours. The card below is one that I cased from Gina K designs, I just loved the colours (I used Always Artichoke, Crumb Cake and Early Espresso on Naturals White and Early Espresso cardstock.) I used the same gridlines and design for my card above. Share:facebook - twitter - pinterest Creating Backgrounds - Retiform Technique
I was challenged to make a Retiform technique card and here's the result featuring the Stampin' Up! Open Sea stamp set. Retiform is "composed of crossing lines" and in stamping we use masking to ensure the images stay within their section of a crossed lines. This card was inspired by a Retiform card made by Gina K. To create this card I used Stampin' Up! Whisper White card stock as the base and sponged criss-crossed lines in Marina Mist ink. I then sponged and blended Soft Sky ink onto the remaining white areas of the card. Using the Stampin' Up! The Open Sea stamp set, I selected individual stamps from this set and stamped them in Soft Suede ink. Prior to stamping, I masked off the lines already made with the Marina Mist ink with post-it-notes to ensure the images stayed within their section. I used the banner triple punch to create the sentiment base and stamped the Happy Birthday sentiment from the Guys Greeting stamp set. Some linen thread and an Antique Brad completes the sentiment. The Retiform base is mounted on Early Espresso and added to a Marina Mist card base. Hello stampers. When is the last time you really played with your stamps? This retiform technique is a great one for encouraging just that. Retiform means 'netlike'. Well, we are not interested in the lymphatic glands, but the crossing lines and all the other fun stuff involved with this technique is truly addictive. Hello Crafty Friends A quick blog post today to share a card that uses the Retiform or Grid Technique to create a beachy themed card. Its an easy technique which involves masking, sponging and stamping. There are many tutorials available out there for this technique so I wont bore you with the how to. I have used a few different stamp sets - High Tide and Pop of Paradise for the images and Hello Friend for the sentiment. The sponging was done using Marina Mist and the images in Dapper Denim inks on Whisper White card. The card front was then mounted to a Dapper Denim card base. Hope you give this fun technique a go. Until next time x

Hey there Stampers! It's Wednesday, Hump Day! And the beginning of a new month. I'm very much looking forward to getting some flowers outside and getting my gazebo set up. Today's card features a sneak peek at a stamp set from the new catalogue, which will be available as of June 2. It is the new Animal Outing stamp set and for this card I used the Retiform technique. Now you will notice that some of the sentiments used are retired, but I believe that sentiments are so versatile that I very rarely get rid of those stamp sets. ------------------------------------- Don't forget to Like me on Facebook! Today I wanted to share a new technique, well new to me. I have seen this technique all over pinterest, and decided to give it a try. I am not sure how, or why it is called "Retiform", to me it's more like a collage. After making one card of course I had to try several others. This one I used Lemon Lime Twist, Old Olive, So Saffron and stamped with Early Espresso. I added just a little bling to top it off. This one I used Old Olive and So Saffron for the sponging, and stamped with Early Espresso, Calypso Coral and Old Olive. Added just a little Early Espresso Ribbon(retired). As I was working on these I glanced down at a stack of Christmas stamps and the Beachy Little Christmas was staring at me. I had not used this stamp set yet, and was struggle with what to do with it. I have to say I like how it turned out. I used Pool Party, Bermuda Bay and Smokey Slat for the sponging and stamped with Basic Gray. As far as instructions on how to do this technique you can find several different videos on pintrest or youtube. I did use the small sticky notes to mask off, but the larger ones would work better. I also used a dauber to get the crisp edge around each section. I thought it worked better then the sponges for that part. Today is the Retiform Blog Hop! I have never done this technique, so after searching online and watching a few youtube videos I gave it a try. I started by thinking about colors and selecting stamps. I decided to go vintage - can you believe it?!? I love vintage sets but quite honestly I don't use them very often...although today they came out. I chose 2 sets "Vintage Backgrounds" and "Fly Fairy" and thought I would try to create a masculine card. I started with 2 pieces of white cardstock (1.5" x 3.5" & 3.5" x 5.5"), a black pen and some sticky notes. I placed the 1.5" x 3.5" piece of cardstock in the center of the 3.5" x 5.5" cardstock, then traced around the rectangle with the black pen. I sectioned the outer frame. The outer frame was masked and the bicycle was stamped in the 1.5" x 3.5" rectrangle. I used Cognac Palette ink and a sponge to ink the edges. On the opposite side of the line I sponged Burnt Umber Palette. I repeated that pattern. The finished image was matted on Bazzill Raven and the base card is Bazzill Pinecone. I added a piece of brown twill ribbon to finish it off. This is a great technique! Hope you enjoy the rest of the retiform blog hop. Hope your day is blessed! Deb
