Hierve El Agua, near Oaxaca, South Mexico Hierve el Agua (Spanish for "the water boils") is set of natural rock formations in the Mexican state of Oaxaca that look like waterfalls. The site is located about 70 kilometers east of Oaxaca city, past Mitla, in the municipality of San Lorenzo Albarradas, with a narrow, winding unpaved road leading to the site. The site consists of two rock shelves or cliffs which rise between fifty and ninety meters from the valley below, from which extend nearly white rock formations which look like waterfalls. These formations are created by fresh water springs, whose water is over saturated with calcium carbonate and other minerals. As the water scurries over the cliffs, the excess minerals are deposited, much in the same manner that stalactites are formed in caves. One of the cliffs, called the “casacada chica” (small waterfall) or the Amphitheatre, contains two large artificial pools for swimming as well as a number of small natural pools. One of the artificial pools is very near the edge of the cliff. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierve_el_Agua

One of my fondest memories as a child was racing across the beach, dodging the giant waves in search of striking shells and rocks. There is something magnificent about finding a rock hidden in the ground that hasn't been unearthed for hundreds of years. Unfortunately, the beauty of rocks and minerals found in the ocean doesn't last long; it recedes as the water evaporates from the rock. With a quick rinse of water, the beauty and memories come rushing back, and you are reminded of those moments once again. I wanted to capture that feeling of amazement and mystery I had as a child collecting rocks. Staring down at the abundance of texture, wondering how something so beautiful could be created. Nowadays, we tend to overlook the hidden details nature has to offer. This project was created to show people beauty is everywhere; sometimes, we just have to take a closer look.
(Note: Rockhounding in Bancroft is a well-known activity. However, the Bear Lake site mentioned in this post is now apparently private property and not open to public digging. There are new details about a geologist-led gem hunting tour held in July and August each year, led by the Bancroft Chamber of Commerce. The post below is based on our 2011 experience - things have changed since then. ) Remember when you were a kid, and you found a shining, metallic rock, thinking you had really struck it rich with a piece of gold? If your parents were kind, they would let you
