Chicago-based artist Rosemary Holliday Hall envisions transformation through Encyclia Imagosis, a sculptural series that brings the physical processes of insect metamorphosis to a human scale. The four artworks consist of oxidized fabric stretched across metal structures, creating a translucent form that highlights the spacious shape of the wireframe. Similar to insect chrysalises, the meshy works serve as a symbolic site for change. “Encyclia Imagosis investigates various ways we make sense of the world and relate to ourselves and others through imagination, metaphor, and material,” the artist writes. White Sage has been used for many years to banish unwanted spirits and clear negative energies. The Holy and Sacred Herb is known for its healing powers. Traditionally used as a smudge or incense for protection and purification. It has a long history of use as an altar offering and has been referred to as "Portable Altar." Uplifting scent. Burn it to nurture and protect that which is ancient, sacred and wild within you. Use it when you need encouragement or courage. Yerba Santa - Holy Herb. Traditionally used as a smudge or incense for protection and setting boundaries, Yerba Santa has also been used for love, purification, growth, empowerment and beauty, and the release of emotional pain stored in the heart chakra. Uplifting scent. Blue Sage also known as “Grandmother Sage” is a purifying herb with broad medicinal and magical applications. Blue Sage is widely used for cleansing and purification purposes, it provides spiritual strength and sometimes it is also used during exorcism rituals as well to remove the malevolent spirits. Blue Sage is a hardy bush found in the deserts of the Southwest. It’s named for its abundant blue flowers, but the leaves also have a blue-ish cast. It has thin leaves and a fragrance that is both herbaceous and floral, similar to Lavender. A close relative of White Sage, Blue Sage is also good for healing and cleansing rituals. Its soothing, relaxing smell can be used to aid meditation, or burned simply for enjoyment. It’s not as pungent as White Sage, and is more agreeable to some folks who find the strong, bracing scent of White Sage overpowering. The cedar tree has been revered for its spiritual significance for thousands of years. Its wood was used for the doors of sacred temples and burned in cleansing ceremonies for purification. Cedar has a long history of use in indigenous sweat lodge ceremonies and the tree was thought to house important gods and to be an entrance to higher spiritual realms. Cedar is first and foremost a medicine of protection. It is often used to cleanse a home when first moving in, inviting unwanted spirits to leave and protecting a person, place or object from unwanted influences. Cedar is often used in the sweat lodge ceremony. A few pinches are thrown on the red-hot rocks, immediately sparking into a yellow glow and releasing their aroma. The smoke of burning cedar is said to attract the good spirits and eliminate negative energies. The cedar is also one of the four sacred plants of the indigenous American Medicine Wheel and represents the Southern direction. The other plants contained in the Medicine Wheel are: White Sage representing the West, Sweetgrass representing the North, and Tobacco representing the East. The smoke of sweetgrass produces a sweet and light fragrance that is excellent for cleansing sacred spaces. Sweetgrass is believed to invite the good spirits and sweet dispositions. It is often burned at the beginning of a prayer or ceremony to attract positive energies. Like sage, cedar, and juniper, sweetgrass is used to purify the home. For Indigenous peoples in North America, sweetgrass is revered as a sacred medicine. Many see it as a cultural keystones species, reflecting a group’s cultural identity and embodying their values and beliefs. Braids of sweetgrass have been burned during ceremonies for generations by Northern American Indians. The smoke of burning sweetgrass will purify and cleanse places, objects and people. The three strands of the braid represent the mind, body and spirit, all working together in unity. Sweetgrass is still considered a sacred plant by many native tribes of North America and is traditionally used as incense in many sacred ceremonies, purifications processes, healing rituals, peace ceremonies, and initiations. It is said that the sweet smelling smoke cleanses the spirit and brings sacred messages to the higher planes of existence. ***You will receive ONE item picked at random. The food we eat connects us so deeply to those we love and, perhaps, especially so when they are no longer with us. And this recipe is really in honour of my maternal grandmother, and not just because her name was Rosemary. And yes, rosemary is, as Ophelia tells Hamlet, “for remembrance”, and has been since Egyptian times. Indeed, many Australians and New Zealanders wear a sprig of it to honour their fallen on Anzac Day. This is the cake I make when a friend is bereaved — and I know that many of you, ever since the recipe appeared in Feast, do likewise. It’s plain, undemanding, and offers sweet, scented comfort when grief makes eating difficult. And in its own simple way, it’s a beautiful cake, the rosemary sprig curving out over the top, down the length of the biscuity gold, dense loaf. And please read the Additional Information section at the end of the recipe before proceeding. For US cup measures, use the toggle at the top of the ingredients list.
