Retablos are a devotional folk art form from Mexico and the Southwest US. They are small paintings on wood of Catholic saints and angels. To create these affordable heart-felt paintings of saints, angels and blessings, Lynn has brought to the folk art of Retablo making, all the skills and passions that she has learned through a lifetime of drawing, woodworking and painting. Her business, Lynn Garlick Retablos has grown organically over a period of 20 years. She is a long time resident of Taos, New Mexico. Speaking of her work, Lynn says, "The diverse cultures and the landscape of this part of the country deeply and yet unintentionally influenced me both artistically and spiritually. I am nourished by Northern New Mexico's rugged wildness and rawness. The profound devotion found in the different traditions and faiths here are unusual and inspiring." Moved by the sacred art of the retablo paintings and the santeros (saint makers) who made them, she started creating them herself. Lynn hand-carves and paints her original designs on the traditionally used ponderosa pine planks. Then she decoupages high quality prints of her originals onto pine boards, in an old school technique used for the Italian altar screens of medieval Europe. This process has made her printed retablos affordable. All of her saints are ready to hang or rest about the house, in a pocket or on an altar. On the back of the retablos is the story of the saint's life. Many of them also have a prayer.

A small chapter in American history was written in San Diego nearly 140 years ago. It involved General Stephen Kearny, Kit Carson, and a series of strategic blunders.

San Pasqual (St Paschal Baylón), beloved in the American Southwest, was born in Spain in the mid-1500s. Known for his humility, he worked as a shepherd until being accepted as a Franciscan friar. Tradition holds that angels would assist him as he worked in the kitchen; he is popular today as a patron saint of cooks and kitchens. The quote I selected, attributed to San Pasqual, is the prayer of many who serve in kitchens: "I joyfully celebrate the food I am given. May it deeply nourish every soul that I feed." Also renowned for his devotion to the Eucharist, I included the perfectly full, round moon as a subtle symbolic reminder of this beautiful aspect of the life of San Pasqual. I look forward to adding names and dates to this piece for the special cook in your family (or parish!), Confirmations or other special celebrations. Above the wooden doorframe beam is a lovely place to add custom details - such a unique gift! Names and dates are added by me, by hand, in text that matches the lettering within the original piece. Prints measure 12x18, 11x14, 8x10, or 5x7 inches on bright white, acid free, 100# paper. A narrow white border runs around the edge of the print. All of my prints are professionally run by a small, locally owned printshop. Each print is signed in pencil by the artist (me), with the date and name of the piece handwritten on the back as well. This image is also available as a set of 8 4x5 inch notecards or 12 2.5x3 inch prayercards in a colorful organza bag. Featuring the main image on the front, the back has the quote in black & white hand lettered text. They make a unique and meaningful favor for Confirmation celebrations. Sold un-matted, this piece does look wonderful with a variety of mat colors and frames - bright and contemporary, it could serve as an eye-catching yet meaningful accent to your kitchen or pantry wall. The print will be shipped to you via USPS in a protective plastic sleeve with a backing board in a sturdy photo/document mailer. 12x18s are printed to order (so might take a week or so longer), rolled carefully and shipped in a sturdy cardboard mailing tube.
