Spanish sculptor Isabel Miramontes creates figural bronze sculptures that bring a visual movement to ordinary silhouettes. Her works provide unusual shapes within the body of her subjects, opening up torsos to reveal elongated spirals and horizontal bars that seem to reveal an inner turmoil. Often the faces of her sculptures have blank or passive expressions, unknowing participants to the tangle of bronze that twists below. After her career as a dancer, Annette Jalilova chose to explore another of her artistic talents and turned her entire focus to sculpture. The initial period revolved around volume with the "SENSUELLES" series, and was followed by a second series of sculptures known as the "INSEPARABLES" in which she introduced voids. The pieces are positioned in relation to one another to constitute coherent personas in poses as timeless as they are natural. Around the same period, Annette evolved towards the "GRAPHIQUES" series. Always attached to the notion of balance, she refined shapes and forms to extremes, sometimes composing groups arranged like friezes of dancers. More recently, she has been creating compositions of statues - the "MOBILES" series. Owners can thus isolate or regroup the elements they possess. By virtue of the moving, living nature of statues, owners can create highly personal works based on their own conception of space. Annette Jalilova has stylized her expression to the extreme, but her work has never lost anything of its characteristic voluptuousness while continuing to endow the body with momentum and lines of extraordinary perfection. First, I warm up the Castilene in a microwave and work it in my hands like clay, applying the warm Castilene to the sculpture (Fig. 1) After I achieve the basic form using just my fingers, I'll then heat my sculpting tool and smooth the surface (Fig. 2, Fig. 3) I will continue to heat the tool during this process every few seconds, holding the tool very briefly over the flame. I will continue to refine the surface with this tool until I get a basic flow of detail that I like (Fig. 4, Fig. 5) Next, I will gently heat a small loop tool over a flame (Fig. 6), and will use this to carve some deeper detail into the form (Fig. 7). I will do this briefly, just to add a bit more depth to the form (Fig. 8) Next, I will very briefly heat a sanding pad over the flame (Fig. 9), and use this to smooth the surface a bit (Fig. 10). For this stage, you must heat the pad over the flame for only a half-second or so each time, VERY quickly or else it will begin to burn. You'll need to do this every 3-4 seconds while you work, and lightly drag the heated pad on the surface of the Castilene to smooth it. It sounds tricky, but it's quite simple. I'll do this until the hair is generally smoothed and ready to begin detailing (Fig. 11). For detailing, I heat my metal tool over the flame once again (very very quickly this time, only to warm it up a little... you don't want it to be too hot, only warm enough so it doesn't "stick" to the Castilene). Then I will use the edge of the tool to "press and roll" detail into the surface of the Castilene (Fig. 12) This "press and roll" method is the most important step in my detailing technique. I will continue doing this until I've achieved the level of detail that I want (I try to avoid dragging or 'scribing' detail in this stage, as that is what often causes the unwanted "crumb effect"). For smaller curves, I will use a smaller tool and even a round loop tool sometimes, but the "press and roll" method still applies (Fig. 13, 14, 15) Finally, sometimes I will lightly brush down the surface with lighter fluid (Fig. 16). I do this VERY little, as using too much will make the surface grainy and mushy, so use it sparingly (Fig. 17) Just make sure to only brush lighter fluid on Castilene when you are completely finished with the sculpting, as it's very difficult to re-sculpt any area that has already been brushed. The hair is finished! (Fig. 18)

Amanda Shelsher (born 1971,Western Australia) works as a full time sculptural ceramic artist from her home in, in Perth Western Australia. She grew up surrounded by bush in the small suburb of Gooseberry Hill and was introduced to clay at the age of 10 when her mother began her own career as a professional potter. Surrounded by both an artistic mother and father, Amanda was drawn into the world of ceramics and was firing and glazing works from this early age. Amanda began exhibiting at age 18 and went on to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Visual Arts - Ceramics at Western Australia’s Curtin University of Technology. She then completed her Graduate Diploma of Education (Art - Secondary) the following year in 1992. After teaching in Perth, the United Kingdom and France, Amanda travelled extensively for three years. This proved a catalyst for her to begin her journey as a full time artist in 1998. Since then she has exhibited extensively and provided work to leading galleries throughout Australia, including FORM Contemporary Craft and Design Perth, Aspects of Kings Park, Raglan Gallery Sydney, Beaver Galleries Canberra, Skepsi Gallery Melbourne and Margaret River Art Galleries. Post-travel, Amanda’s work focused on themes of travel and a desire for flight. However, this changed significantly after the arrival of her and her husband David’s two children. The artist is now drawn to different themes particularly her perceptions of the miracle of life, domesticity and growth. Amanda’s themes may now focus on domesticity, yet her works still travel the globe. In 2007 she was flown to Los Angeles for a group exhibition of Perth's established and emerging talent presented at the Scion Gallery, Culver City. Her work was exhibited at SOFA - International Exposition of Sculpture Objects and Functional Art, in Chicago in 2007, 2006, 2005 and 2004, represented by Raglan Gallery. She also exhibited at the prestigious art fair Collect at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum in 2006. In 2006 Amanda attended Art Taipei with Raglan Gallery where 90 exhibitors from 16 countries came together to exhibit the best in contemporary arts. Her works were also selected for the Fubon Art Foundations’ 18th Feast of the Mind - Buffet of Art annual exhibition, and she was chosen as one of four international artists, alongside another renowned Australian sculptor, Patricia Piccinini. Most of Amanda’s work is created at night when she is able to find time for herself. During this period she can settle down, consolidate her thoughts and enjoy the process of making. Amanda’s workspace is a small worktable in the lounge of her family home- she is constantly surrounded by her family. Juggling the two roles of mother and artist is not easy but Amanda thrives on working for competitions or her latest exhibition or international show. She was selected in 2007 for the 30th Alice Craft Acquisition in the Northern Territory. Her work has been selected for numerous award exhibitions including Perth’s 2006 Sculpture by the Sea in Cottesloe, the 2002 Sidney Myer Fund International Ceramics Award, the 2005, 2003, 2001 and 2000 Gold Coast International Ceramic Award in Queensland, and Ceramics: The Australian and New Zealand Context at the Campbelltown City Bicentennial Art Gallery in 2003. In 2006 she was awarded the Sculpture Prize in the City of Wanneroo Art Awards.
