About The Artwork A broken branch of an oak tree is probably not given special attention by many. But for children and artists it can be the beginning of a creative journey. In the artist's case, this branch was the basis of a new sculpture that follows the original form of the piece of nature, but refines it and transforms it into an organic and complex-shaped sculpture. The artist is not concerned with depicting something. The wood itself as a natural material and an aesthetic design with a play of edges and surfaces are content enough. The sculpture is thus a refined piece of nature and invites you to enjoy the look and feel. Associations are of course allowed, but this is a matter of observation. The wood is waxed and the sculpture is mounted on a dark stone slab. “Still Stand” sculptures by Joel Escalona Joel Escalona's wooden standing sculptures are objects of raw beauty and serene grace. Each one is a testament to the power of the material, with smooth curves that flow into one another, inviting the viewer to pause and reflect. The sculptures themselves are like silent sentinels, standing guard over the spaces they inhabit, filling their viewers with a lust to touch them. In a world filled with noise and chaos, Escalona's sculptures offer a moment of calm and tranquility. They invite the viewer to bask in their serenity, to slow down and appreciate the beauty of nature, the beauty of wood, and the beauty of art. Wood is a medium that offers so many benefits to art and design, beyond visual aesthetics. It's soft enough to be easily worked by hand, yet strong and hard enough to take on virtually any form. Escalona has harnessed the qualities of oak and walnut, natural materials that have been waiting for 3-4 months, to create these sculptures. Each piece is made to order, so some changes may happen to the final design due to the material and process, but that's what makes each piece so unique and special. —— NONO is a Mexican design brand with more than 10 years of experience dedicated to the production of interior furnishings, editions, and custom-made projects. A piece of bark, a broken trunk, a fallen branch or a scattered twig. These things are often ignored, but artist Debra Bernier turns them into art.
About The Artwork A trunk section with a hollow inside, whose history emerges through the growth rings made visible; the central cavity adds a sense of three-dimensionality and volume to the sectioned wood. An enigmatic object, a hybrid between a woodblock sample and an abstract sculptural form that refers to the formal experimentation of a lot of 20th century sculpture; evocation of tribal masks or archaic artifacts where the mystery of the hole that passes through the material charges the latter with magical power. The trunk dissected by human intervention makes visible what is invisible in every tree while it is alive, that is, the ring chart that documents its vital growth: to count the rings, the tree must be cut. However, this section is hollow due to the intervention of natural rot, which, approaching the growth rings, creates a synthesis between organic dissolution and documentation or evocation of a vitality that was. Reclaimed redwood 30 x 12 x 2 inches (for 10 piece installation) The marbled redwood (light and dark) told me what to do with it - I just let the wood guide me for this piece. Three layers of reclaimed redwood, laminated, carved and finished with linseed oil to bring out the natural colors of the wood. The outside is finished with black chalkboard paint. Each of the 10 wood tiles measures about 5.7 x 5.7 inches.
