According to the story, a peasant named Timoteo Espinoza discovered the Estela in 1840, at a time when he was removing the earth in a field very close to the Chavín de Huántar Temple , he took it to his house to be used as a table. When the geographer Raimondi arrived, he was surprised to see that the underside of the slab has a very refined and exquisite design. He took her to Lima and thus saved her from destruction. Archaeologists in Greece excavated an ancient healing temple in the acropolis of Feneos dedicated to Asclepius, god of healing, in 2015. Along with the foundations of the sacred temple, researchers also found an enormous statue of Asclepius, and his daughter Hygeia; an elaborate mosaic floor, marble podiums, and offering tables.

There's something about Cheong-ah Hwang's paper sculptures that makes it difficult to see them as what they are: mostly flat arrangements of cut-out shapes. In particular I'm going a little nuts over the shadow that candlestick throws. It's... it's painted on there, right? Check out some more of her illustrations in the rest of the post, and if you'd like to buy prints of them, go no further than her Etsy shop.
Romanesque art, architecture, sculpture, and painting characteristic of the first of two great international artistic eras that flourished in Europe during the Middle Ages. Romanesque architecture emerged about 1000 and lasted until about 1150, by which time it had evolved into Gothic. The Romanesque was at its height between 1075 and 1125 in France, Italy, Britain, and the German lands. The name Romanesque refers to the fusion of Roman, Carolingian and Ottonian, Byzantine, and local Germanic traditions that make up the mature style. Although perhaps the most striking advances in Romanesque art were made in France, the style was current

Jiroft artifact, Persia, 3000 BC Throughout the history of antiquity there have been numerous instances where art has interacted with ancient discoveries to forge new art trends and revitalize established arts. From the middle of the 8th century BC, the developing eastern trade connections led to an Orientalising of the Greek decoration of the ceramic arts with new subjects being introduced including palmettes, lions, panthers, rosettes, lotus flowers and the tree of life. Corinth developed its distinctive style with the appropriation of stylised plants and animals and curvaceous flora and fauna began replacing the geometric styles. Greek art

Italian sculptor Aron Demetz (cousin of Gehard Demetz, whose work we featured in Hi-Fructose Vol. 22) creates wood sculptures that appear distressed, burnt and scarred. The process of working with wood is a fundamental part of Demetz's aesthetic — instead of presenting polished and perfected works, Demetz celebrates the wood's textures and its transformation through various natural processes. The simplified, abstracted human figures can seem like personifications of the wood itself. Demetz is currently exhibiting new works at Gazelli Art House in London through June 5 along with Korean artist Shan Hur for their two-person show, "The Tainted." Take a look at some images of Demetz's sculptures after the jump, images courtesy of the artist.
