How much do you know about Michelangelo’s “David” statue?
The ceramic sculptures of Hitomi Murakami tether humanity to nature in a way that appears both elegant and chilling. Her figures grow from vegetation and are consumed by it, exposed and writhing. Works such as “Land of Root,” in contrast, seem more connected to wonder.

Whereas having a chiseled body may be a physical ideal in the modern times, being fat was once considered a natural beauty in China. As early as Han Dynasty, the rounded figures used to be desired. And in the early to mid 1900s, when wars were fought across the nation, being fat was once considered a sign of being “well fed,” even though this notion has slowly dissipated. The “Fatty” sculptural series by Chinese artist 牟柏岩 Mu Boyan (b. 1976) depicts a naked male figure in unimaginable position. Here he is seen hanging onto a ledge and would not let go. Some art critics see the figure as that of sumo wrestler, though I highly doubt that at Chinese artist would be referencing sports culture from Japan. Similar to the laughing men of 岳敏君 Yue Minjun, you either love it or hate it, but the one thing you cannot do is forget about it. And in that sense it is a successful piece. Truly demented. Crazyisgood. Just the kind of art I love. 牟柏岩 Mu Boyan (b. 1976 Yunan, China) Dot 2013 Color on Stainless steel 142 x 37 x 42 cm # 牟柏岩 Mu Boyan b. 1976 + 1993-1997: 中央美术学院 China Central Academy of Fine Arts + 1997-2002: BFA, Sculpture, China Central Academy of Fine Arts 中央美术学院雕塑系,获学士学位 + 2002-2005: MFA, Sculpture, China Central Academy of Fine Arts 中央美术学院雕塑系,获硕士学位。 + 2005: Teaches at China Central Academy of Fine Arts 中央美术学院 # Aye Gallery Rm 601, Unit 3, Yonghe Garden, Yard 3, Dongbinhe Road, Dongcheng District Beijing 100013 China www.ayegallery.com/ # SML Data + Date: 2013-05-23T18:33:48+0800 + Dimensions: 3545 x 5252 + Exposure: 1/30 sec at f/4.0 + Focal Length: 29 mm + ISO: 100 + Camera: Canon EOS 6D + Lens: Canon EF 17-40 f/4L USM + GPS: 22°16'59" N 114°10'22" E + Location: 香港會議展覽中心 Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) + Workflow: Lightroom 4 + Serial: SML.20130523.6D.14253 + Series: 新聞攝影 Photojournalism, SML Fine Art, Art Basel Hong Kong 2013 # Media Licensing Creative Commons (CCBY) See-ming Lee 李思明 / SML Photography / SML Universe Limited Sculpture by 牟柏岩 Mu Boyan (b. 1976 China): Dot (Fatty series), 2013 (Color on Stainless steel) / Aye Gallery / Art Basel Hong Kong 2013 / SML.20130523.6D.14253 / #ABHK #Photojournalism #CreativeCommons #CCBY #SMLPhotography #SMLUniverse #SMLFineArt #SMLProjects #Crazyisgood / #中國 #中国 #China #香港 #HongKong #攝影 #摄影 #photography #Art #FineArt #ArtBasel #牟柏岩 #MuBoyan #sculpture #WTF #LOL #sculpture #fat #figure www.flickr.com/photos/seeminglee/9132995715/

Some photos are so chilling, it's just hard to look away. Even more so, a photo of a sculpture carries with it so much mystery that we just can't help try to uncover the real story behind it's eerie complexity and take a closer look.
Isabel Miramontes creates fractured bronze figures and surreal sculptures that evoke movement and experiment with the human body.
Beth Cavener Stichter's (Hi-Fructose Vol. 26 cover artist) sculptures have an intensely-visceral quality. The ceramic animals she hand-builds demonstrate an human-like sense of understanding with their sensitive gazes and anthropomorphic eyes. But despite their thoughtful countenances, these characters are also perfectly at home in their animal skins. Cavener Stichter's work does not shy away from the brutality of the animal world, from its untamed sexuality to its endless cycle of predator and prey. Read more after the jump.

About The Artwork Michael Talbot is a British sculptor, born in Staffordshire in the north of England in1959. After completing a BA honours degree in Sculpture, he gained a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Arts in London for post graduate study in 1980, winning the coveted Landseer prize in 1983. He studied further at The Sir Henry Doulton Sculpture School under Colin Melbourne ARCA and Dame Elizabeth Frink RA. Michael was elected a member of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1997 and was elected a member of the National Sculpture Society (USA) in 2012. The inspiration for Talbot`s work has always been the human form and its dramatic poetry. It is this, together with his exquisite skills that make his work so individual, intricate and beautiful. Talbot creates the original clay sculpture which he then casts into bronze, uniquely finishing and patinating each sculpture. This process is wholly under his control allowing him to enhance and refine the final image. The wonder and fascination of sculpture is its ability to be a solid form that can be seen, touched and walked around and yet remain an object of pure spirit. Adopting traditional decorative motifs found on Ming Dynasty ceramics, Chinese artist Lei Xue sculpted these humorous smashed aluminum cans that bridge the gap of some 600 years of art history. The pieces are part of an ongoing series titled Drinking Tea, and unlike the mechanical process of producing cans, each object is sculpted and painted by hand. You can see more of Xue’s work at Martina Detterer Gallery. More

Wondrously detailed worlds emerge from busts of youthful women in clay sculptures by Chinese artist Yuanxing Liang. Ambling trees, bridges, and temples emerge from the figures’ hairline, fusing realism and fantasy in smooth resin. Despite their complex design, Liang occasionally creates small editions of his sculptures. The artist is a gradute of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts.
