Cheap, quick and irresistible to honk: the Party Horn Shofar. I tweaked this classic to meet a specific goal: to produce a "realistic-looking" shofar that will not offend the sensibilities of a certain group of students who feel themselves too mature for stickers and glitter. I also needed horns easy to "sound" (some brands are hard to blow), so…

Kids can make an origami shofar to play with, to set on the table as a place-card or decoration, or to glue to the front of a Rosh Hashanah greeting card. This pattern is taken directly from Florence Temko's book Jewish Origami. Ideally, of course, kids make a paper shofar in the presence of a real…

The festival of Shavu’ot (“Weeks”) is a Jewish holiday that occurs on the sixth day of the Hebrew month of Sivan (late May or early June). Shavu’ot commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave the Torah to the nation of Israel at Mount Sinai, although the association between the giving of the Torah (*Matan Torah*) and Shavu’ot is not explicit in the biblical text. The holiday is one of the the three biblical pilgrimage festivals and marks the conclusion of the Counting of the Omer. The Torah portion for Shavu’ot (Exodus 19–20) describes the LORD appearing in the midst of fire, thunder, lightening, cloud, and the fanfare of trumpets. Psalm 68:17 provides a bridge between Exodus 19 and the haftarah, Ezekiel 1. The Psalmist says, “The chariots of God are myriads, thousands upon thousands; the LORD is among them as at Sinai, in holiness.” *Pesikta Rabbati* explains, “At the time of the giving of the Torah, 22,000 divine chariots descended with the Almighty, every single one of which resembled Ezekiel’s in greatness.”
