Smith College, the prestigious women's college founded in the 1870s, announced a policy change over the weekend: The college will admit self-identified transgender women, beginning with students entering in fall 2015. "The policy decision is the culmination of a year of formal study, during which the board and an appointed Admission Policy Study Group reviewed Smith's admission policy in light of society's evolving understanding of gender," wrote Smith president Kathleen McCartney in announcement about the decision. "The study group listened carefully to the voices of the campus community, Smith alumnae, and parents; consulted outside experts, including legal experts; and conducted its own research. The recommendations of the study group, as well as an advisory vote of the faculty, informed the board's decision." Students attend a class at Smith College in 1948. McCartney also stated that "in keeping with our tradition and identity as a college of and for women," the school will continue to use female pronouns in institutional communications. Smith may be the largest of the all-female Seven Sisters schools, but it is not the first to admit transgender women—prominent all-women's colleges Wellesley and Mount Holyoke announced that they were opening their doors to transgender women this past March
Smith College is a private, independent women's liberal arts college with coed graduate and certificate programs in Northampton, Massachusetts. It is the largest member of the Seven Sisters. The Seven Sisters is a name given to seven liberal arts colleges in the Northeastern United States that are historically women's colleges. Smith is also a member of the Five Colleges consortium, which allows its students to attend classes at four other Pioneer Valley institutions: Mount Holyoke College, Amherst College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst.—Wikipedia—This image was processed as an HDR (High Dynamic Range) composition.
