Jag fortsätter med broderidagboken, samtidigt som jag försöker ta det lugnt och läka ryggen. Broderi är bra terapi. Det är lite Frida Kahlo-stuk, utan att annars jämföra mig varken med hennes begåv…

Phew! Done! I blogged about my process here, and it is built. Below are the details and the full image of "Enlightened", and NYC themed artwork that will exhibited this April at the Mahopac library in Mahopac, NY with FiberArt NorthEast (details on the exhibition soon). Enlightened © Natalya Aikens 2013 This artwork is composed of mostly recycled materials ( plastic bags, wool scarf ), only the thread used is new. Oh and the canvas of course. Measuring 14"x14" on an 18"x18" canvas. Inspired by the lines: "Ethereal, frail, and like an opening rose, I see my city with an enlightened eye." By Anna Hempstead Branch from her poem " New York at Sunrise".

I've missed a Guild meeting or two lately and one I really wanted to attend was Alysn Midgelow Marsden's Tarnished Stitches workshop. However my good friend Biddy bought me the kit round with written instructions on how to use it. My first sample turned out ok so I thought I would try something a little more ambitious I used an old stitched sample piece and added lots of tacky lace, beads, buttons and little stitched elements and then burned the edges. This is it 30 mins after I used the metallic paint and ageing solution, it takes several hours to develop completely. I will stitch and paint into it again tomorrow (and may be a bit more burning) and use it for a book cover. This is a real playful piece of work, just what I needed today.

Cutting quilts up to create new ones is an intuitive and challenging enterprise. It lends a sense of danger to the workspace. I am constantly reminding myself to let it go . In other words, no matter how many hours it took me to create a piece if it doesn’t please me any more then it is a candidate
