Hi all! I'm excited to write about a resource I started using/making graphics for last school year, but finally felt it was ready to share on the blog: The Fluency Toolbox for Stuttering You can find it in my TpT store here, and here's how I use it: I use the toolbox as a visual when I teach fluency strategies to my students. We aren't curing stuttering, but we are giving them a toolbox full of strategies that they can learn to use and apply to improve their fluency. When we learn a strategy, we add the tool to the box. At the beginning of each session, we choose a tool (or a combination of tools) that we are going to focus on for the day. The tool sits in front of them and serves as a nice visual reminder of what we're working on during activities. To give the kids ownership of their toolbox and express their fluency style, they can choose a toolbox in red, green, purple, pink, blue, or yellow! There are several strategies out there to target fluency. The strategies I included in the packet are some of the most commonly used across many different intervention programs (Healey & Scott, 1995).The strategies included and described in this toolbox are: cancellations pull-outs full breath stretchy beginning natural pauses rate control slow smooth & easy speech breath and speech together language planning talk in short sentences easy onsets & easy beginnings (same strategy just different lingo) light contacts continuous voicing preparatory sets & fake stuttering A printer-friendly black and white version is also included. The kids can easily color their own tools! Toolbox Assembly: Cut out the toolboxes Cut an opening on the solid black line to create the opening: Staple the toolbox onto an 8.5x11 sheet of paper Trim around the toolbox, removing the extra white paper Cut out the tools & add them to the toolbox as they are taught And that's it! Also included is an entire set of blank tools in my TpT product so clinicians can add any other additional strategies! And there you have it! What tools have you found helpful with your students? I would love to hear! Thanks for checking in! Mrs. Ludwig Reference: Healey, C. & Scott, L. (1995). Strategies for Treating Elementary School-Age Children Who Stutter: And Integrative Approach. 1-2-3 Come Do Some ST Blend Activities With Me The "Stuff a Stocking" packet, includes a variety of quick, easy and fun ways to help students practice words that begin and end with the ST blend. For one activity, children color and trim a stocking, then stuff it with words that have the st blend in them, by writing the words on the front of their stocking. The packet includes an alphabetical list of 92 common words that begin with st, as well as a list of 64 simple words that end with the st blend. Before sharing the lists with your students, as a whole group, have them brainstorm to see how many words they can think of. Write the words on the board, and have students look up any words that are new to them, jotting them down in their writing journals. This is a great vocabulary building activity, and perfect for Daily 5 word work. For another whole group activity, I've included matching mini-word cards to pass out to your students, so that they can "stuff" either a teddy bear stocking with beginning st word cards, or stuff a moose stocking, with words ending with the st blend. To be able to "stuff" the paper stockings, laminate & trim them. Cut a slit under the cuff portion, and attach a large Ziplock Baggie to the back. Call out an st blend word from your list. (Before hand, highlight words that you want to review with your kiddos.) The child holding that card shows it to the class, everyone reads the word, and then that student "stuffs" the card through the opening of the appropriate stocking. To help build vocabulary, ask children to define the words. When you're done with the game, simply zip the Baggie and tuck in your file. For yet another activity, students choose 3-5 cards and write sentences incorporating the word cards that they picked. To practice alphabetizing, have students write their word cards in alphabetical order. I've included a worksheet for this, which would be a terrific Daily 5 word work activity as well. Click on the link to view/download the "Stuff it!" ST Blend Packet. Thanks for visiting. It's time for me to get to the grocery store. The cupboard is indeed bare, as I hate going out in the hustle bustle of December. The inclement weather and crowds are a bit overwhelming to me, and I'd much rather be curled up by the fire, sipping eggnog and making sketches of stuff I want to design. Wishing you a warm and cozy kind of day. "Christmas Time: Snowy climes and silly rhymes, a make-believe sense of time, when the old become young and the young walk the line." -Unknown

It is still a topic of debate and discussion. A few medicines and most importantly physical therapy can help alleviate the symptoms and slow down the development of this disease. Causes The exact cause of Muscular Dystrophy is under debate. However, some schools of thought believe that Muscular Dystrophy is caused by mutations on the X chromosome. There are many types of this disorder and each type is said to be caused due to a different set of mutations. However, the similarity among them all is that they prevent the body from producing dystrophin. A point to be noted here is that Dystrophin is a protein indispensable to the human body. It is required by the body for building and repairing muscles. Symptoms There is no fixed set of signs and symptoms of Muscular Dystrophy as they vary from patient to patient. Generally, these are not sufficient to confirm the presence or absence of the disorder. Hence, the doctor may recommend tests like enzyme tests, electromyography, genetic testing, muscle biopsy, heart monitoring tests, and lung monitoring tests to take the proceedings further. Treatment No specific cure has been invented for the treatment of Muscular Dystrophy in Gurgaon till date. Some medicines and mostly physical therapy has been found helpful to alleviate the symptoms and keep the patient mobile for the longest possible time. Patients with Muscular Dystrophy often struggle with a lot of everyday activities. Physiotherapy can help the patients effectively deal with a lot of neuro musculoskeletal problems. Physiotherapy can help slow down the digression of a range of motion, improve the muscle strength and the gait pattern. Physiotherapy also involves various stretching programs for the patients. It is a combination of a passive range of motion and active-assisted range of motion. Regular stretching of the ankle and hip is also involved. The patient should not ignore the symptoms in the early stages and meet a qualified physiotherapist to get a personalized treatment plan developed. The physical therapy programme generally involves the following - Breathing assistance - General in the patients of Muscular Dystrophy it is noticed that the muscles used for breathing become weaker. It becomes important to use devices to help improve oxygen delivery through the night. In the most advanced cases of the disorder, a patient may need to use a ventilator to breathe on their behalf. Mobility aids - Some patients are also provided with canes, wheelchairs, and walkers. It helps to keep them mobile. Braces - Braces are used to keep the muscles and tendons stretched. Besides, it helps slow down their shortening. They also give the patient added support while moving. Range-of-motion and stretching exercises - It is often seen that Muscular Dystrophy restricts the flexibility of the joints resulting in a reduced mobility. Limbs of the patient often draw inward and become fixed in that position. Physiotherapists often suggest many Range-of-motion exercises that can help to keep the joints of the patient as flexible as possible. General exercises: A range of motion and stretching exercises form a part of the general exercises suggested to the patients of Muscular Dystrophy during physiotherapy sessions. It helps fight the unavoidable inward movement of the limbs as muscles and tendons shorten. Limbs of the patient tend to become fixed in position. These exercises along with some others keep them mobile for longer. Among the other exercises suggested are the standard low-impact aerobic exercises like walking and swimming. These can also help slow down the development of the disease into something serious. Courtesy: Pal physiotherapy
