In Tadao Cern’s sweeping installation “French Exit,” a cloud of feathery grasses looms over the room. The immersive artwork juxtaposes the ephemeral, dried material with the viewers who stand underneath as it creates a soothing and introspective space to consider the notions of farewells, whether it be the close of a party or more profound experiences, like the end of a relationship or death. Cern tells Colossal that the title refers to the colloquialism about leaving a social gathering without saying goodbye. More

Each image comes in a limited edition in 3 sizes. There are 24 images in the collection. About the project: I was looking for a place where I could observe human beings without any distractions and beach is almost the only place where it looks like people are voluntarily putting themselves under anesthesia on a laboratory table, where they can be explored like disassembled objects by the observers (us) above them. It’s a great chance to deep dive into our culture and natural habits that are perfectly revealed in detail in these photographs. Images are not staged. It’s a photo documentary that was done during the summer of 2013. None of the subjects in these images knew about being photographed before or after the photoshoot. Lithuanian artist Tadao Cern created a series of delicate, experimental hanging paintings that have nothing to do with paint at all.
In a society so fixated on appearance and a tendency to hide imperfections, it’s a common paradox that most people are willing to bare all on the beach. In his recent series Comfort Zone, photographer Tadao Cern explores this contradictory behavior as he captures candid, unsuspecting sunbathers, partially exposed, as they lie asleep on the beach.
Artist Tadao Cern often considers dualities and contradictions—lightness and heaviness, minimal and intricate, inanimate and lively. He channels these relational tensions into “BB,” installations featuring black balloons that float in parallel planes and incline in rows. “These boundaries are a result of our own mental rule-making, and at the end, we surround ourselves with many limitations,” the artist shared with Colossal. “(The) notion of contradictions is nothing more but a man-made concept…A feeling of nothingness and absence of all the ideas became the objective for me.” Based in Lithuania, Cern has brought the ephemeral project to Tokyo, Beijing, New York, Paris, Venice, and Cologne in recent years.
