Link to the resources of this unit that talks about pets: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Pet-Theme-for-Elementary-ELL-3193977 The resource is also available here: https://www.bilingualmarketplace.com/products/pet-theme-for-elementary-ell?variant=37285641584804 Use the pet flashcards to appeal to the visual learners. Create activities to capture children´s attention. Present the new vocabulary words and practice them using games. The students that finish first can sit together and ask each other the words. You might want to send these home to some responsible parents to play as a way to practice animal-themed vocabulary. Hand in a flashcard to each student. Ask questions. Teacher: Do you have a pet ? Student: Yes, I have a bird. Teacher: What color is your bird? Student: It is blue and green. Make a mind map. Draw a big circle in the middle of the board and write the word PETS inside the circle. Have the students name all the pets they know and write them. Then hand in the flashcards to individual students and have them place the flashcard next to each animal. Students can create their own mind map on their notebooks using drawn animals or cutouts from magazines. It can also be a bigger project using a poster board in small groups. Children then can introduce their pets to the class. You can graph many things. Here some ideas: What do animal do want to have ?/ Do you have a pet ? / Do you like cats? / Do you like dogs ? Pet body parts. Review body parts using the flashcards one at a time a writing the name of each part. I had to research each pet. Children can also do the same using cutouts from magazine.(LABELING) Then I created a chart. Place all the flashcards on the board and write the body parts that you would to contrast. Ask questions to complete the chart. Teacher: What animal has wings ? Students: a bird. Teacher: Do hamster have wings ? Can they fly ? Students: No, they don´t. They can´t fly. Teacher: Which animals have tails ? Students: rabbit, bird, dog, cat, fish, turtle, hamster, lizard. Teacher: Does a fish have claws ? Students: No, it doesn't. And some hands-on worksheets. I suggest that each group of two or three get a pet and allow them to think and read all the body parts. The label sheet has all the animal body words and they have to choose which words are the ones that suit each animal, for example, only birds have wings and cats have fur but not the bird. They will have to analyze the vocabulary and pick the right body parts and label their pet. Then have them present their pet to the class. Now, let's introduce how to indicate position by using prepositions of place. Put the animal locations on the board. Ask the students where the pets live. Give individual students the animal cutouts to place in the corresponding location. Then have them talk about their pet location. Student: My bird is on the tree. ( I also included a bird cage.) Write the prepositions. I came up with this resource that can be a book or flashcards to emphasize prepositions. Pets and adjectives. Review the describing function of the adjective word. Students will talk about the pysical appearance of the animals. Place the fat cat on the board. Teacher: What is this ? Students: a cat ( Teacher writes the word CAT) Teacher: What color is the cat ? Students: orange ( Teacher writes the word orange) Teacher: Is he happy or sad ? Students: happy ( Teacher writes the word happy) Teacher: Is he fat or thin ? (Use your hands to show fat and thin) Students: fat. ( Teacher writes the word fat) Teacher: It is an orange cat. (Students repeat as you point to the words in the board). Continue with: It is a happy cat, It is a fat cat. Use more animal cutouts to practice adjectives on the board. You can also give out a pet to each student and have them create their mind map and sentences to present to the class. As I suggested on my last blog post about adjectives (http://eflelementaryresources.blogspot.com/2015/10/adjectives-for-elementary-ell.html) ,sort the pet using adjectives words. I also made this craft stick sorting on that blog post, and added up with more pets. Made some bones ! I printed onto colored paper so it´s easier to sort the color word, the pets and the action verbs. Grab one from each pile and place them on the board. Have the students make up a sentence. Then hand in three bones to each student so they can make a sentence on their own. Brainstorm with students the way the pets move. Place the cards as they mention the animal action verbs. Next, have students make a list on their notebooks of 9 pet action verbs writing the noun and the action verb, as seen on the cards on the board. This the complete list for you.Take the cards away and put them in a bag. Play Bingo ! Place the cards again on the board as you announce them. With the flashcards and the cutouts make a chart on the board. Have students come up and complete it using the resources or writing the word. They can even make one on their notebooks. I had these clip art and came up with the Guess Who? Game. You might have seen in the stores. It is usually played with two players but you can add some more. The game is actually played with 24 cards. You can adapt the game according to your group. I made big cards for the board and small ones for the groups. I suggest you play on the board first with the whole class. Place all the cards on the board and a number on each one. Teacher: Who has an orange cat ? Students: Number 18. Continue with more examples. Then, pick a card and don´t tell the class. They have to ask questions in order to know which card you picked. Students: Is it a cat ? Teacher: NO! Students: Is the animal green ? Teacher: YES ! Students: Is the animal big or small ? Teacher: It is small. Students: Who has the animal, a boy or a girl ? Teacher: a boy. Students: It is number 31 ! Teacher: YES ! After you have modeled with the class, have them play in groups with fewer cards. They can write a number grid or give instructions on how you would like to play. Plurals. I created an S wand for the birthday theme and now I can use it again. Place the plural card on the board. Teacher: What are they ? Students: They are cats. Teacher writes the word cat and places the S wand to make it plural. Tell the students that you add the S to make it plural. Next, continue with the other cards. Finally place fish and mouse. Tell them about these irregular plural which are made different. There are more cards to work on. Pets and Colors. Use the small flashcards to ask the questions. For Spelling, I made the letters the size of a 5x5 cm puncher so you don´t have to cut. I recycled some old toilet paper tubes and glue some colored paper that I had left over. Instead of having lots of toilet paper tube I placed 3 letters on each tube so you just have to turn the tube to put the letter. If you want the file, please ask me ( [email protected]) Found these Scrabble kind of clip art and made a scrabble printable. Each child should get one and make their own board and see how many points the students make, there should be a winner. I suggest you explain the rules before asking them to make the board on their notebooks or construction paper. Follow my FACEBOOK fan page: https://www.facebook.com/ESLPreschoolTeachers/
Here are some teaching tips to wrap up part of the Family Unit. LINK to the family unit resource: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Family-Unit-for-Kindergarten-Holistic-English-Series-8-6126315 Props for the family unit! I created props for all family members. Make as many as you want or have the students color them. You can assign each student a prop. Then place a skewer behind each one. Teacher: Look! A tie! Who am I? Students: Dad! Students should be able to use the key structure: This is Dad. Or students can show their prop and the class will guess which family member the prop belongs to. You can also bring in real objects. A video on how I made the props and how to use them: You might want to add a mini lesson using this Robot Family. You might have already gone through the toys unit, so Robot is a familiar word. First, go over the Robot Family Flashcards. The key structure for this unit is: Who's this? Students: Mommy! There is a set of the small cards to adjust to your student's needs. A simple activity is to match the small card to the big flashcard. Take a look on how to use it as a speaking activity. Today, I found an easy idea on how to make a bean bag. Well, grab a sock from your kids, fill it up with beans and close it with a twist. Play throw the bean bag to a family member. Name the person in random order: grandma! Worksheets are a great teaching tool to have when you need them. These fun family members in a car! Simply have fun with a Robot Family game board. Another idea that I saw today was to tape the game marker to a Lego block. Family Unit AWARD. Print the ribbons and after each student can name all the family members place the ribbon on his/her shirt using a pin taped behind each image. You can also send the ribbon virtually. The cardigan for the family unit. Print the faces onto cardboard or paper like mine. I glued mine onto fun foam. Cut a small slit in the middle of each face and pass it through the button. Wear it for your online lesson or in class. Holidays resources included. The cardigan for the family unit. is around the corner. Here is an easy craft included in the resource. I created a hanger as a decoration for Dad, but I am sure that you will come up with more ideas on how to use the sports balls. Use the balls to introduce new vocabulary. And What about making a trophy and a card for Father's Day? Students color and cut the template and glue onto a toilet paper roll, the same with the card. It will make a nice decoration for Father's Day. An easy craft for Mother's Day! Print the Happy Mother's Day template. Give one to each student to color. You can dictate the color of each letter if you working on the Alphabet.Cut a strip of a toilet paper roll for each bracelet. Students paste the template and they can decorate the bracelet with beads, glitter and more. If you do this activity, I would love to see how they turned out. Another craft! Your students can make this easy flag to use as a decoration for the flowers. An easy paper plate craft that serves as a decoration for Mother's Day. - Gather a big paper plates, the ones that are used for cake decoration and a doily for cake. Glue them together. Print the templates provided, there is a boy and a girl. Students color the templates, cut and glue onto the cake doily. Add any other embellisments that you have. I used small flowers. Send home with a note to the moms to use a plate stand to place the decoration. Valentine's Day with a pocket chart activity. It can be done at any time of the year. Oh, the babies are included. I found three sets of Halloween Families: Vampire, Ghost and Frankenstein. I know how hard it is to find resources related to the unit that we are doing and the Holiday, such as Family unit and Halloween. That’s why I created this teaching material , all in this resource . Halloween Families Flashcards to sort on the board. Then, ask questions. Teacher: How many people are there in the Vampire family? Students: one, two, three, four. FOUR!! Teacher: Who are they? Students: Mother! Father! Brother! Sister! Make the pointers craft stick puppets to point out each Halloween Family member. Use the templates. Teacher: Point to Father Frankenstein! Place the flashcards into a clear plastic sheet. Use a dry erase marker to circle or draw the parts of the face as you name them. Teacher: Circle Mother’s eyes! Check the video: There is a Hello hand in the Family Unit resource that can be used to say Hello and Goodbye to each Family Member. Teacher: Hello, Father Frankenstein! There is a set of Halloween families small flashcards for small group instruction or online teaching. Use the cards for sorting the people into families. Have the students name all the people in each family group: This is father Frankenstein! Use the cards for calling the people in the BINGO game. Print the 12 Bingo cards and the family members that are all mixed up for fun. Halloween Families Cutouts. Play fly swatter! Teacher: Mother Frankenstein! Use the cutouts for sorting Halloween Families on a pocket chart. You can sort by family members or by Halloween characters. I taped the cutouts onto straws. I also made a small theater. The cutouts for the theater are added to the resource. I grabbed a box and cut a frame of 10 centimeters, I used rice paper to wrap it. I glued the cutouts onto the theater. Have your students put up a Halloween play. A Halloween Family puzzle to wrap up the Holiday. As a craft or a classroom decoration to review the vocabulary. Point to family member and ask questions. Or , finally, use the small cards and create a Frankenstein family tree, a Vampire one or even a Ghost Family tree! Here is a video. Thanksgiving and the Family unit. I found these fun Turkey family clipart to create a set of flashcards and small cards to review the family members vocabulary. Then you can also make puppets with the family members. I glued them onto recycled CDs to make them easy to handle. There is a b/w version and a colored one. A set of Thanksgiving Worksheets than can be turned into a book. Have your students color each family members in a group of five, so each student colors just one. They have to glue the phrase and create a turkey family book to take home. For Christmas and the Family Unit I have a book ready to print. More less the same as the other printable books in this resource but with the Christmas clothes. Here is an update on the Adjectives Flashcards, there are more than 100. Link to the resource: https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Adjectives-for-Elementary-ELL-2150071 OR You can find it here: http://kinder-bilingue.myshopify.com/products/adjectives-for-elementary-ell The adjective flashcards are here to promote the use of natural language. Place this adjective flashcard on the board. Ask questions to develop the oral and listening skills. Teacher: Look at this man. He is tall. (write the word tall in white) Look at this man. He is short. (write the word short in white) Do the same with thin and fat but with a yellow chalk. Assign a name to each man. Make sentences. Teacher: Pedro is tall and thin. Eddy is fat and short. Have the class pick two students to make more sentences similar to the example. Here we have happy and sad flashcards. Do the same. Teacher: Who is this? Student: He is Danny. Teacher: Danny is happy. Teacher: Who is this? Student: He is Joe. Teacher: Joe is sad. Have two students come to the front and act as a happy and sad. The class has to make more sentences. Introduce new and old with the flashcards. Show students the difference that these words are used for things. Point to the first car. Teacher: What is this? Student: It is a car. Teacher: It is a new car. Teacher: What is this? Student: It is orange. Let’s go with clean and dirty flashcards. Teacher: What are these? Student: They are pants. Teacher: They are clean pants. Teacher: They are dirty pants. Point to the dirt spots. Have the students walk around and find examples with more clothing items and say the corresponding sentence. I can’t miss, big and small. Teacher: What is this? Student: It is a backpack. Teacher: It is a big backpack. And this? Student: It is a small backpack. There is a game I found called Grumpy Grandpa in this book. I adapted it and made my own version. It is a good idea to have the students get familiar with the cards by matching them on the table first. This game can be played in pairs or in groups of three. There are 24 cards. Give each group a set of cards. Students shuffle the cards and hand them all out to the members of the group. Students hold all the cards in their hands without showing them to the group. Explain that the idea of the game is to make pairs of picture and words. The first student to make them by getting rid of all the cards is the winner. Have them notice that there is a Funny Guy card that does not match to any word. The game starts as students make pairs that they already have in their own cards and lay them on the table as they name the adjectives. The players make sure that the pairs are right. Student 1 picks a card without seeing from the next to him/her and checks if it makes a pair to his/her own cards. If there is a pair, the students lay the pair on the table. The game continues until the first students gets rid of all the cards.Watch the video to see how the game is played. I made my girls play to test the game. Since many of you are doing distance teaching these days, use the game cards to introduce the new vocabulary, they are small enough to manage through the small screen. Watch the video, I did some examples with my girls. More examples: Check the other blog posts for the same resource: LINK: https://eflelementaryresources.blogspot.com/2015/10/adjectives-for-elementary-ell.html Your ideas and feedback allow me to help you.

Teacher: Who is this? Students: Mother! Teacher: What’s the mother’s name? Students: Patricia. Her name is Patricia. Continue with all the family members. Family members have facial features. Use the flashcards to describe the parts of the face. Teacher: Who is this? Students: Mother! Teacher: Look at the mother! She has curly black hair. She has black eyes. Insert each flashcard into a clear plastic sheet and using dry erase markers have the students label the facial features. Students will understand how to use adjectives to express emotions. I made a set of worksheets that can be done in a group to color in the facial features and the emotions. Each student can do one family member and then present to the class. Or, they can exchange with other students in the group and read. The teacher can start a question and answer session. Teacher: Who is this? Students: The aunt! Teacher: What’s her name? Students: Her name is Lucy. Teacher: Does she have brown hair? Students: Yes, she does! Teacher: Does she have blue eyes? Students: No, she doesn’t. She has green eyes. Teacher: Is she happy or sad? Students: She is happy! I also added a smaller set just in case you needed it. After the little faces are done, you can sort the family members by hair color. Or sort by eye color. Family Unit Pocket charts can be used for reading purpose and have them work in pairs to complete the reading task.Use these to ask yes/no questions: Is this Father? If you do not have a pocket chart, try making the sentences on the desk or a mat. Make it fun to read using a pointer. I had this old one from the Dollar Tree store. I found these dry erase cutouts and use it for writing the sentences in the pocket charts. You can make your own sentences for the pocket charts. I used these strips that I had from the Dollar Store. Or cut the words and have the students make the sentences. To end this part of the Family Unit I made a game board. The golf balls are the markers for each student, I placed a clip behind each ball. The cards are light green (female) or dark green (male) depending if landing on the dark or green part of the game board. Students move along the board as they answer the questions correctly.
