Sara Francis My drawing classes are off and running with the completion of our first in class project and our first creative sketchbook assignment of the marking period. We have spent the first couple of weeks in class talking about positive and negative space. Positive space by definition is the areas containing the SUBJECT matter in a work of art; the objects depicted, as opposed to the background or space around those objects. Negative space is then naturally, the areas in an artwork NOT occupied by the subject matter, but which contribute to the composition. Negative space can also be background space or empty space but not exclusively. We drew simple outline sketches of chairs, focusing on shape and space. The key here: getting to draw the chairs big enough that there would be more positive space than negative space. After completing about 4 sketches, students chose one for a POSITIVE space drawing and one for a NEGATIVE space drawing. In the positive space drawings students were to fill in the space with Zentangle designs. In the negative space drawings, the negative space is filled in with Zentangles. All though simple, the outcome is complicated and beautiful as you can see in the examples above. Our first sketchbook assignment was to take the zentangles and create a figure using zentangles to create hair! What are zentangles you ask? A Zentangle is an easy, fun way to create beautiful, decorative images using structured patterns. There are some great sources to learn more about zentangles, but the best place is the official web site that you can find here: www.zentangle.com Here are some of the assignments: Erin Jermyn Meryl Glaser Michaela Kotob Veronica Gibbs Everest Crawford Jordan Pallazola Gloria Kabulo

Use this worksheet as a quick introduction or review about positive/negative space. This is a very simple worksheet meant to be used for younger grades. I use this worksheet in my classroom mostly as a review, especially for projects that rely heavily on using space if we haven't talked about it in a while. Directions on the worksheet are: "In the boxes on the LEFT side, color in the POSITIVE space. In the boxes on the RIGHT side, color in the NEGATIVE space." On the bottom of the page is a quick definition of space "Remember positive space is the subject/focus of the artwork while the negative space is the background or the area around the main subject.

Artwork by Maddie Overlapping is usually the first way that young artists learn to explore the art element of space. Simply by overlapping elements, the student's flat, two-dimensional drawings suddenly become three-dimensional because one element is clearly in front of (or behind) another! Suddenly, there's a foreground and background to their drawings! This is one of those art concepts that's obvious to adults, but it can feel like an epiphany to children. Our simple landscapes of overlapping hills, each with a tree that blocks the hill behind, is one way we've been learning about space in first grade this month. (Note: As this was a new lesson for me, I experimented with letting some classes color with paints and others with colored pencils, thus the differences in media in these examples.) All I can say is, "WOW!!!" This project is- hands down- one of my very favorites! The pictures do not do the actual work justice. We filled the 4th grade hall with these hands and it is a feast for the eyes! We learned about positive and negative space and cool and warm color schemes. We started by making a background for our hands using Mr. Sketch watercolor markers on a 12" x 18" piece of white sulphite drawing paper. I separated containers of them by color schemes, and the students had to choose if they were a "cool" or "warm" color scheme person. Most students chose cool colors. As you can see by the last example, the students drew "bursts" of radiating colors in concentric lines all over their paper. Then they painted over their paper with clear water making sure to go off the edges of the paper. The effects were amazing! Most papers lost the initial drawing of the lines as the water worked it's magic, blending and gradating the color. The students then traced their hands on a 9" x 12" piece of black paper. I instructed them to make a small cut from the edge of the paper to the tip of their thumb to "get into" their hand and then cut around the contour line. This was just meant to reduce frustration for them. When the papers were glued down to the background, the cut becomes practically invisible. They used their same color scheme to color in their hands and frame of hand with Prismacolor pencils. I told them they could write (appropriate) words if they would like, patterns and designs and to, most importantly, express themselves! I am giving them a huge virtual clap of my hands for a job well done!

Today we discussed the concept of NEGATIVE SPACE. Negative space is the shapes made by the space around an object. Artists look at both the positive shapes (the objects they are drawing) and the negative space around the objects when sketching out an image. In class we drew the negative space around a collection of colored pencils and scissors. A worksheet about negative space went home today. This is homework and it looks like this... This worksheet will be due Wednesday, January 21st. Note: There is no school on Monday, January 19th, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Tuesday, January 20th, we anticipate that many of the 6th grade classes will miss art due to the inauguration of President Elect Obama, which they will be watching. Wednesday, the 21st, students should come to art prepared to have their picture taken in preparation for a self portrait project. Make sure your hair is how you want it! The photo will not be published in any way or fashion. You, the student, will receive the one and only copy of the photo as a reference for your artwork. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns about the self portrait photos.
Space is the boundary inside the frame which holds the subject providing context to the artwork. Elements of art space is very important concepts for artists.
