As we enter winter and flu season, taking an unexpected day off as a teacher can always be a time consuming and stressful task. As a teacher, I always dread getting sub plans together since for me, it is such a time consuming task because I want everything to be perfect. I always like to be prepared for my students in case of an unexpected absence. While I am gone, it is important for my students to have meaningful work that reinforces the skills we are learning... not just busy work. My winter themed sub plans are all based on one of my favorite stories to share with my students in the winter, and "The Mitten" sub plans and can be easily printed in advance for a stress free day out. Included are a full days worth of activities for "The Mitten." All you need is a copy of the book The Mitten by Jan Brett (affiliate link), and I always like to copy and prepare my resources in advance. (affiliate link) Or a YouTube version that is read online by the Jan Brett! The activities that supplement the story will keep your students engaged and challenged for the entire day. They cover all subject areas with kindergarten appropriate activities, as well as instruction sheets for your sub. To begin, I always read the story with the students and then sequencing the events to reinforce the story. It is always fun for students to put the events in order in a pocket chart and they always enjoy the participation. Students can then get their own little hands on their own emergent reader, that is a great way for them to help remember the story sequence independently and get a text in the student's own hands. Students at this time are pretty familiar with the story, so we complete a sequencing activity. (This sequencing sheet is a freebie at the end of the post). Also included are quite a few other literacy activities that are common in kindergarten such as labeling, “sentence surgery,” where students create a sentence out of mixed up words and a color by code mitten where students identify the middle vowel sound in a word. Writing is also an important skill in kindergarten. These sub plans cover two different levels of writing activities, based on the needs of your students. Many times in kindergarten, writing may be just be drawing and telling your story, while some students may be capable of writing to answer a question, so included are activities for both levels. As a teacher, it Is also to model for students and see what a "correct" sentence looks like so there is also a sentence copying and sentence "fix it" activity as well. Math is another subject that has so many different skills levels in a kindergarten classroom. I have included a huge variety of easy to differentiate activities for math as well, based on your students levels and what you have taught in the classroom. You will see simple skills such as counting and writing the numbers, ordering numbers 1-10, addition, and counting, counting by tens, teens numbers and graphing. Finally, there are fun "extras" that can be used to supplement or to substitute out an activity if you wish. Included you will also find a "hat," puppets for students to make and retell the story on their own, a crossword puzzle, maze and "which doesn't belong." These activities can definitely last you an entire day out, if not two. Hopefully, these sub plans and everything included will be able to give you peace of mind if you do have to be out of the classroom and your students are able to enjoy the activities while reinforcing skills. The Mitten by Jan Brett is an absolute favorite book of mine. I remember it from my elementary school days, and I've always used it in my classrooms and with my own children. Today we got snow for the first time, and so it was the perfect day to pull out this book. I'm going to share a couple activities with you that go great with this book. 1. Hunting for the White Objects (Sensory) In the book, Nicki's grandmother does not initially want to make him white mittens because it could so easily get lost in the snow. Find a handful of white (or mostly white) object from around your house, a gallon sized ziploc baggie, tape, and white flour. Fill the bag with a couple cups of flour and all your white objects. Then, tape it shut so curious hands don't leave flour all over your house. Children can use this as a sensory activity and feel around to find the hidden objects. Finding something white in a white bag is hard, just like loosing a white glove in snow! The consistency of the flour really does make it a difficult task! For younger children, you may want to use larger white objects to avoid frustration. 2. Mitten Match & Sort (Math) Gather up all those little mittens for matching and sorting. You can have your children match each glove to its pair, or sort them into piles of like colors or styles. You can also create patterns! 3. Mitten Lacing (Fine Motor) Use your own hand as a template for a mitten. Cut two out, and punch holes around it. Tie string or yarn to one of the bottom holes and let your child practice lacing in and out of the holes. Younger children may need the end of the yarn taped to effectively move the string through the holes. Bonus: Print out pictures of animals from the book and have your child put them inside their mitten as you tell the story! Do you have any other fun activities to go with Jan Brett's The Mitten?

Preschoolers and kindergartners love these story rock activities for The Mitten. Includes a free printable to make your own The Mitten story stones!
So I (Amber) have had this mitten pattern for years. We always cut two and glue or staple them together and put the characters aside. And honestlybit was driving me nuts! They always got torn, or put too much glue for their animals to fit, and I just really didn't like the project. So this year I changed it up. I decided a paper bag would be the perfect way to have an opening for sequencing the story. I just cut about half of the bag off so that it would be the same size as the mitten tracer I already had. Just turn the bag on it's side and it's perfect! Then I gave each of the students a set of animals to color and we were ready for retell! Erin's class printed the mittens on white card stock and colored them! Below is a fun follow up activity and you can find the mitten and animals there too! Just click the picture to download it! What fun things to do you like to do with Jan Brett's story?
1-2-3 Come Do Some Mitten Activities With Me! Since the other mitten packets to go with Jan Brett's story The Mitten, were such popular downloads, I decided to make a few more language arts craftivities to match that Ukrainian folktale. The Mitten literacy packet contains: an ordinal number worksheet that will help your students with sequencing the characters, a label the cover activity, a beginning-middle-end graphic organizer, 2 sets of pocket cards that review characters, stories and events + 8 bookmarks to prompt retelling of the tale. Click on the link to view/download The Mitten Literacy Packet. Another way to sequence the story is with The Mitten Story Telling Slider "craftivity." Run off the mitten on white construction paper and cut slits for the "window" with an Exacto knife. Children cut out their mitten, add some color to their "slider" and insert it into the mitten. Students retell the story by pulling the pictures on the slider so they show in the window. Click on the link to view/download The Mitten Story Telling Slider. Finally, I made some pocket review cards. Students change the letters that need to be capitalized and add end punctuation. The question cards provide a nice review of the story as well. Click on the link to view/download The Mitten Punctuation-Capitalization Pocket Card Review packet. Thanks for visiting. It's time to don my mittens and brave the cold, so Chloe my poodle pup gets a bit of fresh air. "He had mittens, Minjekahjwun, magic mittens made of deer skin; when upon his hands he wore them, he could smite the rocks asunder; he could grind them into powder." -Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
