Are you looking for a comprehensive tool to engage your students in deep character analysis while studying The Great Gatsby? This resource will do just that, as students develop critical thinking skills and gain a deeper understanding of the complexities within this book. The Great Gatsby has been a timeless classic within the high school classroom, and I have found over time that my students often have difficulty keeping track of the characters and the events. I have created this “Reading the Characters” resource to help students dive into the world of the book and keep track of the major characters throughout the plot. This resource is great because it allows students to add information as they read. Once they have finished the novel, they will have a running record or characters to use for reference on final projects, essays, or traditional assessments. In the process of tracking the characters, I have found that my students’ comprehension of the novel has increased, and therefore, they become more engaged with the text. Within this nine page booklet (digital slides, or editable table), students will meticulously track crucial information about each character, including their background, motivations, and goals throughout the novel. The tracker prompts students to delve into character dynamics, thematic relevance, and symbolic representations, fostering critical thinking and literary analysis skills. Why Use This Product in the Classroom: This product is an invaluable asset in the classroom for several reasons: Facilitates Close Reading: By systematically tracking character development, students engage in close reading practices, extracting nuanced details from the text. Promotes Critical Thinking: The prompts encourage students to analyze characters' actions, motivations, and interactions, fostering critical thinking skills. Enhances Comprehension: Through thorough character analysis, students gain a deeper understanding of the novel's themes, plot intricacies, and social context. Encourages Discussion and Collaboration: The tracker can serve as a springboard for rich class discussions and collaborative activities, as students share their insights and interpretations. This product contains: A nine-page printable booklet (black and white / color) A digital Google Slide version of the booklet An editable table on a Google Doc for educators who would like to edit this activity to their own liking. This booklet is a total of nine pages. I have provided printable pages both in color & black and white. Additionally, the colored version is available as a Google Doc for a more computer-based classroom environment. Finally, if you’d rather your students complete a single chart, as opposed to a booklet, or if you’d like to change any of the prompts or directions, I have provided an editable table on Google Documents. With this resource, your students will be able to keep track of the same information all on one convenient table. I am confident that this resource will help engage your students in The Great Gatsby and scaffold a deeper understanding of this timeless classic. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or would love to see material for another book, please email me at: [email protected] I will do everything I can to support your teaching endeavors. - Tori Hancock
