My first blog focused on American contemporary female painters. Some of these artists I admire, or just like but I don’t think they necessarily influence my work in the way that the American painters in my first list do. Again most of them are not especially famous but I thought I’d share their names and […]

Simon Palmer (1956 - ) is a British painter whose work I've only recently discovered. The artist lives and works in northern England, his work primarily focused on the subdued but strangely moving beauty of the Yorkshire Dales. The artist's love of the Dales is on display in every square inch of his enigmatic watercolor paintings. The earth toned colors are symbolic, I suppose, not only of the overall light and shadow in and around his home in Ellingstring, Wensleydale, but of the earthiness of the tough and resilient people of Yorkshire. I am taken by Palmer's imagination, the eccentric take he has on life among the hedgerows, fields, stone houses, trees and rolling hills. Slightly sinister, but beautiful and never off-putting. Capturing the untamed beauty of the Scottish Highlands, this expressionist print portrays Lochinver Bay in Assynt, Sutherland, with a vibrancy that beckons the viewer into its dynamic landscape. The piece is characterised by bold, impasto brushstrokes that imbue the scene with movement and life, reflecting the spontaneity and emotional resonance of the expressionist style. The foreground is dappled with a mosaic of lush greens and ochres, suggesting the rugged vegetation that clings to the coastal rocks. Patches of bright white break through the colour, reminiscent of sunlight dancing on the water's surface and the mottled rocks, giving the sense of a crisp, clear day. This interplay of light and shadow adds depth and complexity to the scene. Transitioning from land to water, the bay itself is rendered in mesmerising shades of turquoise and azure, creating a striking contrast with the earthy tones of the shore. This cool expanse draws the eye towards the horizon, where a succession of silhouetted headlands fade into the misty backdrop of the distant mountains, adding a layer of atmospheric perspective. Above, the expansive sky is a dramatic element, with swathes of white and blue that mirror the bay's tranquillity and the scene's overall serenity. The clouds are sketched with a freedom that suggests a brisk wind sweeping across the sky, lending an airy openness to the composition. Part of the 'Scottish Coves' collection, this print is a testament to the raw and rugged allure that Scotland's natural landscapes hold. It offers an escape to viewers, inviting them into a world where nature's beauty is rendered in bold strokes and vivid colour — a celebration of the wild Scottish coast.
