Have you ever heard of toxic positivity? Toxic positivity involves dismissing negative emotions and responding to distress with false reassurances rather than empathy. When people talk about what they’re feeling, their main goal is (usually) to validate their emotions, to understand and accept the emotional experience. In contrast, emotional invalidation involves ignoring, denying, criticizing or rejecting another person’s feelings. ☹️
Validation is a fundamental relationship skill. As humans, we want to feel seen, understood, and appreciated. This comes - in large part - from validation which involves recognising and accepting someone else’s feelings. To practice validation start by: 👍Being fully present with the person 👍Accurately reflect on what you’ve seen or heard to show the other person that you’ve listened and understood. 👍Ask clarifying questions 👍Normalise their emotional reaction and meet it with compassion.
