Viking Patterns for Knitting is the result of years of research by Swedish knitwear designer Elsebeth Lavold, who explored patterns of ornamentation found on Viking artifacts, such as swords, buckles, combs, and rune stones. Now, by means of clever knitting innovation (which makes it possible to start a knitted knot in the middle of a sweater), she has adapted these richly intricate knots and braids into gorgeous, fully modern garment designs. The 14 knitting projects include a hooded sweater with interlaced half-hitches; a cardigan with delicate figure-eight knots; an elegant tunic with serpentine ropework; and father-and-son pullovers inspired by rune stones. Sixty motifs are clearly presented in pictures, text, and charts, including the entire runic alphabet and a striking collections of Viking artifacts. Viking Patterns for Knitting is an adventure in Nordic forms with roots a thousand years deep. Author Elsebeth Lavold's yarn substitutions

No, it’s not a spello! The word I wanted is ‘runes,’ as in the ancient Viking written characters. Last spring I was working on a stealth project — stealth just because I wanted to keep it close to the vest. This sweater was a labor of love and an homage to a very talented designer: Elsebeth …

I am still trying my hand at different medieval crafts. So I came across Nålebinding or needle binding. Needle binding is the precursor of knitting & crocheting. With knitting & crocheting you are using loops to form a fabric. With needle binding on the other hand you are using more or less complicated knots. For

Viking Patterns for Knitting: Inspiration and Projects for Today's Knitter by Elsebeth Lavold This is one of my all-time favorite knitting books. It's a classic for those of us who love Celtic designs. Yes, I really did mean Celtic. Apparently Celtic knots came from the Vikings. Elsebeth Lavold's cable and border designs are exquisite, and not all that difficult. She also has charts for knitting runes, which are more difficult but very effective. Even if you never make the lovely sweaters and hats in the book, you will enjoy using her cables and borders.
Viking Braids - Make a Trollen Wheel: A Trollen Wheel is a tool for making patterned cords or ropes which dates back centuries. There is some debate about whether Vikings actually used these or not, but it is a popular craft for children at medieval fairs and Viking-age reenactments non…

I love to made viking knit for bracelets and such, last night I was looking at some viking knit photos and realized that there wasn't any reason why I couldn't do the single viking knit with two strands of wire. This gives the knit a whole different look, it has beefier more coarse feeling. The photo below shows typical double viking knit on top and the new double wire, single knit on the bottom (still attached to the dowel). There are many wonderful videos on how to create viking knit here if you would like to learn how. Viking Knit
